Application September 26, 1946, Serial No. 699,573
4 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in picture frames, and has for an object the provision of a picture frame which not only is ornamental, but also of value as a novelty.
A further object is the provision of a picture frame comprising two parts hinged together, the hinge having no hinge pin as is the case with ordinary hinges.
A further object is the provision of a two part picture frame having pockets for the insertion of pictures on both parts, which are hinged together in a novel manner.
A further object is to provide a picture frame formed from a single block of wood or the like, the completed unit having two parts hinged together by a novel hinge having no hinge pin.
These and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof and in which:
Fig. 1 is a view of one side of a frame embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view of another side of the frame.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the frame partly in section.
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the frame partly in section to more clearly show the construction of the windows.
Fig. 5 is a top view of the frame with the two parts folded together.
Fig. 6 is a top view with the parts spread apart.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 1-1 of Figure 1 with the parts together.
Fig. 8 is another sectional view on the line 8-8 of Figure 1 of the frame with parts together.
Fig. 9 is a view taken on line 9-9 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 10 is a view taken on line lll--l of Fig. 4.
Fig. 11 is a view taken on line ll-ll of Fig. 1.
Fig. 12 is a view taken on line l2-l2 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, the frame is shown to comprise two parts I and 2 having windows 3 and 4 for the insertion of pictures. Part I has a forward section and the head 6 of a bird or other object formed thereon, there being a depression 1 below the head 6 to receive the forward section 8 of part 2.
Part I has a slot 9 in which is positioned the rounded hinge member l0, and part 2 has a slot H in which is positioned a similar hinge mem- 2 ber 12. It will be noted that the two parts are cut out of a single block of wood or other suitable material, there being no hinge pins or the like.
When the two part frame is completely formed, it provides an attractive holder for pictures and also an entertaining novelty for persons to puzzle how it was made from a single block of wood or the like. While the frame has been described as being formed from wood, it can also be made from plastics and the like which can be worked by tools conveniently.
The above description is to be considered as illustrative and not limitative of the invention of which modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope as set forth in the appended claims.
The invention having been described, what is claimed is:
1. In a picture frame comprising two parts hinged together by a hinge having no hinge pin, a first part and a second part, each of said parts being formed with a forward section and a rearward section, each of said forward sections being provided with a pocket for the reception of a picture, each of said parts being formed with a slot positioned between the forward sections thereof and the main body of said part, rounded hinge members formed on each of said parts and positioned in said slots so that said parts interlock and fold parallel to each other said hinge members being positioned in said slots one above the other, and an ornamental head formed on. one of said parts, said ornamental head providing together with said forward and rearward sections of said part an ornamental simulation of a bird.
2. In a picture frame formed out of a single block of material and comprising two parts hinged together by a hinge having no hinge pins, a first part and a second part, each of said parts being formed with a forward section and a rearward section, each of said forward sections being provided with a pocket for the reception of a picture, each of said parts being formed with a slot positioned between the forward section thereof and the main body of said part, rounded hinge members formed on said parts and positioned in said slots, one above the other, so that said parts interlock and fold parallel to each other, and an ornamental head formed on one of said parts,
said ornamental head providing, together with said forward and rearward sections of said parts,
single block of wood, the parts comprising said picture frame being carved out from said block of wood.
4. In a picture frame formed out of a single block of material and simulating a bird, said frame including two parts hinged together by a hinge having no hinge pins, a first part and a second part, each of said parts being formed with a forward section and a rearward section, each of said forward sections being provided with a pocket for the reception of a picture, each of said parts being formed with a slot, rounded hinge members formed on said parts and positioned in said slots, one above the other, in such a manner that said parts interlock and fold parallel to each other, and an ornamental head formed on one of said parts, said ornamental head forming the simulated head of a bird, while the rearward sections of said parts simulate the wings of said bird.
