sHoE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent' No. 252,715, dated January 24, 1882. Appncation fiiea october 11, iasl. (Ng model.) 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY BASS, a citizen ot' the United States of America, residing at Wilton, in the county of Franklin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Iinprovements in Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereou, Which form a partof this specitication.
My invention relates todriving-shoes, and has for its object a means of Securing the shoe firmly to the foot, obviating danger from slip- 'ping ofi' ol' logs, as a result of thepossible looseness of the shoe.
In the drawings, Figure lis a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a cross-section upon the line x x.
A is a shoe ofordinary construction. It has attached to the sole and secured around the iiistep the strap B, as shown. Near the toe of the shoe is placed another strap, O. It is fastened upon each side of the sole, and its free ends are secured together by a suitable buckle, as shown. By the employment of the additional strap much greater security isattorded to the person, the foot is held more firmly in the shoe, and all side motion of the toes and forward portion of the foot is prevented.
This shoe is intended to he used by lumbermen and others who have to tread upon floating logs, or in other dangerous employment,
where it is necessary to secure the greatest firmness of footing.
I am aware that a single strap has been placed around the instep of a moccasin; but in this, while the instep is held firmly, the forward portion of the foot may move laterally and result in accident. 'In iny invention the entire footis made secure. There can be no lateral movement whatever of the foot or any part ofitin the shoe, and consequently much greater security is afforded than by any device patented for like purpose.
The straps are provided with'buckles to permit them'to be loosened When it is desired to remove the'foot from the shoe.
VVhat I claim is- A boot or shoe having a strap, B, passing entirely over the instep portion of the upper, and a strap, (J, over the toe portion, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix niy signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE HENRY BASS.
