Description

July 25, 1950 D. P. MASCOLO 2,516,710
DOUBLE POINT SURGICAL NEEDLE r Filed May 12, 1947 IN V EN TOR. D hF'lN'o P. MAsc'oLo MFIW Patented July 25, 1950 UNITED strips PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a double pointed central eye surgical needle.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a double pointed central eye surgical needle wherein with strokes of the same first in one direction and then in the other, an opening can be quickly and easily sewed with the minimum of time, and wherein there is provided a fiat handle portion at the center of the needle, thus giving the surgeon a good grip which is firm and easily maintained.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a double pointed surgical needle which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and efficient in use.
According to the present invention, there is provided a double pointed needle which is curved upwardly from a central fiat portion to provide two points so that as the needle is moved back and forth, engagement with the wall of the opening can be made with less opportunity for the thread to become entangled, inasmuch as the needle does not have to be turned each time the new engagement is made with the side of the opening. The fiat portion has an eye therein through which the thread is passed. This portion serves as a finger grip and while the fingers are thereon, the thread can be retained upon the same. The needle is shaped in section so as to be strong and rugged, and at the same time, sharp and pointed, so that it can be easily extended through the side of an opening of a person. The pointed portions of the needle are not only curved, but are tapered and of triangular section.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the needle embodying the features of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the needle.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of the needle.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the needle taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a transverse section of one of the pointed ends of the needle taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken on line 56 of Fig. 4.
The surgical needle, according to the present invention, includes a one-piece needle body ID. This needle body Ill has a fiat intermediate portion II with an eye opening 12 therein, and extending upwardly therefrom are two curved pointed portions I3 and [4, respectively, extending from the opposite ends of the flat portion. The fiat portion ll serves as a handle by which the thread and the needle can be grasped. This fiat portion is wide and has sufficient rigidity to retain the curved upwardly extended pointed portions l3 and M.
The pointed portions [3 and M are of triangular section as shown more clearly in Fig. 5 and each has a flat bottom surface l6, sides I! and a sharp top edge l8. In addition to the same having a triangular section, each of the pointed portions I3 and M has also a varying triangular section which tapers from the flat portion II to the point. In operation, the needle is swung back and forth using first one pointed end and then the other pointed end.
It is to be understood that the pointed needle portions are preferably of triangular cross section but they may also be round or of any other cross section.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A surgical needle comprising a one-piece needle body having a flat intermediate portion formed with a single eye opening, said intermediate portion being wider than it is thick, and upwardly and outwardly curved pointed portions continuing from opposite ends of said intermediate portion, said pointed portions being triangular in cross section and of diminishing thickness from said intermediate portion to the outer ends thereof, said triangular pointed portions having fiat bottom surfaces and sharp top edges at the apex of their triangular formalOIlS.
