MOTOR FOR OPERATING PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,300, dated November 29, 1881.
Application filed October 19, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTIs M. TOMLINSON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of 1ndiana, have invented a new and useful Power for Pumping, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in powers for pumping, in which a weight is elcvated (or wound up) and made to operate the mechanism of the power in lowering or running down; and the objects ot' my improvements are, first, to construct a power for operatingpumps, duc.; second, to construct a power for pumping with a series of gearing arranged so as to run several days without rewinding 5 third, to arrange a weight on the pump-han dle for regulating the motion of the pump; fourth, to arrange a crank and ratchet-wheel at the proper place in the frame for winding up the weight. l attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated Ain the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my machine attached to a pump; Fig. 2, plan views; and Fig. 3 is a view, looking down from above the machine, with the top removed.

The baseframe is of a simple construction, consisting of four corner-posts and three (more or less) parallel side and end bars, all framed in a rectangular shape for holding and inclosing the gearing, as shown. At one end of this rectangular frame the elevated frame or tower for hanging the weight is secured, as shown in Fig. 1. This frame consists of two broad nprights, a, placed a few inches apart, so as to allow the weight or box -b to swing or hang between them. At the top ot' the said `uprights is a pulley arranged to let the rope or chain c (which suspends the weight b) turn over it, as shown in Fig.'1 in dotted lines. One end of the rope is attached to the cylinder n at the bottom of the frame a. From there it runs up to the pulley m at the top of the frame a, then downward to the weight or boX b, to which it is made fast. By turning the crank l in the right direction the rope c is wound up around the cylinder ln, thereby raising the weight b up to the pulley m, when, by setting the lever lc sol that it does not touch the ratchet-wheel t', the machine will start in motion. The cylinder u has a ratchet-wheel, d', and a cog-wheel, 1, at one end, all workingon the journal o, the large cog-wheel 1 being made loose on the journal o, so as to not interfere in winding up the weight. The others are all made fast to their respective journals, as shown in Fig. 3.
The motion transmitted from the cog-wheel l to the pitman-wheel 6, through the series of wheels 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, is shown to he geared to run the pitman-wheel y 6 around a great many times faster than the large cog-wheel 1. This is done in order to run the pump a considerable length ot' time by only winding the weight up Once.
The ball g, which is attached to the pumphandle, is made to be set so as to run the pump fast or slow by loosening the set-screw and slipping the ball either way on the handle, as desired, and the stroke of the pump may be regulated in length by moving the pitmau f either way on the handle of the pump, or by .connecting the pitman in any ot' the several holes in the Wheel 6.
I do not conne myself to any exact number of wheels or to applying the power to pumps exclusively; but,
Having th us described my invention, l claim the following as new and desire to secure the same by Letters Patent:
The combination of the weight b, crank d, pulley m, cylinder n, rope c, wheel d', uprights a, rectangular frame o, weight g', pitman f, wheel 6, ratchet t', and lever lc with the series of wheels, as set forth.
