1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in wrenches. and theiprincipal object of the invention is to assure firm, positive and secure gripping of the Work.
This object is achieved by providing the wrench with a pair of co-acting, pivoted jaws, together with a nut-actuated screw for moving the jaws toward and away from each other, some of the advantages of the invention residing in its simplicity of construction, in its efficiency, in its durability, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specication proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated 'in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the invention,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view. similar to that shown in Figure 2, but illustrating the jaws in an open position,
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary detail, taken substantially in the plane of the line 5-5 in Figure 3, and
Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevational detail showing the pivotal connection of the jaws and arms used in the invention.
Like characters of references are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a wrench which is designated generally by the reference character I and embodies in its construction an elongated, substantially flat housing I2 provided at one end with a cover I4 which is secured to the housing by suitable fastening elements I6. a substantially tubular handle I8 eX- tending from the cover.
The remaining end portion of the housing is tapered as indicated at 20 and affords an opening 22, a fulcrum pin 24 extending transversely of the open, tapered end portion of the housing.
A pair of arms 26 are positioned in the housing and extend outwardly through the opening 22 to afford a pair of coasting jaws 28. intermediate portions of the arms 26 being disposed in crossed relation and mounted on the fulcrum element 24 so that by spreading inner ends of the arms apart, the jaws 28 may be opened and, conversely, by drawing inner ends of the arms together, the jaws may be closed.
A hollow, box-shaped actuating member 30 is slidable longitudinally in the housing I2 and is providedin opposite sides thereof with convergent pairs of transversely aligned slots 32 which are open at their upper, convergent ends and have slidable therein transverse pins 34 provided in the inner end portions of the arms 26. The inner ends of the arms 26 extend into the hollow actuating member 30, and it will be apparent from the foregoing that when the member 3|) is slid upwardly to the position shown in Figure 3, the jaws 28 will be open, while when the member 30 is slid downwardly as shown in Figure 2, the jaws 28 will be closed.
The sliding of the member 30 in the housing I2 is effected bysecuring to the member a rod 36 which is slidable longitudinally in the handlev I8, this being achieved by providing the mem.` ber 30 With a boss 40 in which one end portion of the rod 36 may be anchored by a transverse pin 42.
The outer end portion of the handle I8 is provided with a counterbore 44 in which is disposed a rotatable but non-slidable sleeve nut 46, the latter being provided with a screw threaded bore 48 to receive a screw threaded outer end portion 50 of the rod 36, so that when the sleeve nut 46 is rotated, the rod 36 is slid longitudinally in the handle I8, so as to slide the member 3D in the housing I2 to effect the opening or closing of the jaws 28` A screw threaded cap 52 is mounted at the outer end of the handle I8 and a diametrically reduced adapterV 54, provided integrally on the sleeve nut 46, projects outwardly through this cap and has secured thereto a hand wheel 56 provided with a hand crank 58, whereby rotation of the sleeve nut 46 may be effected.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that by simply rotating the hand wheel 56, the jaws 28 may be drawn together so as to firmly and securely grip a piece of Work therebetween. while rotation of the hand wheel 56 in an opposite direction will release the work from the jaws.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details 'of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the inventicn as claimed.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A Wrench of the character described comprising an elongated metallic housing open at one end and closed at the other end, a pair of crossed levers pivotallx,T mounted in the open end porinvention, what is tion of the housing, coacting jaws on the outer ends of the levers projecting from the open end of the housing, a hollow metallic actuating member slidable longitudinally in the housing, said actuating member being open at one end and closed at its other end, said actuating member including opposed Walls having converging slots therein, pins located on inner end portions of the levers and slidable in the slots for operatively connecting said levers to the actuating member, said actuating member further including an integral socket member in its closed end portion,
a tubular handle on the closed end of the housing, a screw cap on the free end portion of said tubular handle, a rod slidable in the tubular handle and having one end portion anchored in the socket member for operating the actuating member, a sleeve nut rotatably mounted in the free end portion of the tubular handle and threadedly connected with the rod for actuating same, said sleeve nut including a reduced end portion extending rotatably through the cap, and operating means fixed on said reduced end portion.
