DOOR FASTENER Filed Dec. 28, 1949 Fig.4.
Ray W. Bead/e INVENTOR.
Patented Mar. 4, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Ray w. Beadle, Denver, 0010. Application December 28, 1949, Serial No. 135,377
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in door fasteners and more particularly to a portable fastener for securing a door in a closed position.
An important object of the invention is to provide a door fastener of the type comprising a locking bar or plate having one end engaged with a door jamb, a slide held in adjustable position on the locking bar and having a stop engaged behind a door and a guide for a slidable locking dog engaging teeth on the bar, and constructing the slide, stop and guide from a single metal blank to simplify and reduce the cost of its manufacture.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is strong and reliable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on a line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 33 of Figure 2; and,
Figure 4 is a top plan view showing the fastener in locking position with a door.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a locking bar or plate having an angular locking flange 9 at one end and an angular stop flange 1 at its other end. One edge of the bar is formed with teeth 8.
A slide, designated generally at 9, is constructed of a blank sheet of metal and provided at each end with upper and lower tongues I bent inwardly behind the bar to form channeled guides for the upper and lower edges of the bar.
A U-shaped guide II is bent from the metal blank at the upper edge of the slide to provide upper and lower guide arms [2 and I3 overlying the upper edge of bar 5, the arms I2 and i3 having alined openings l4 and IS in which a locking dog I6 is slidable. The lower end of dog [6 is formed with a flat head I! engaging the teeth 8 of bar 5 and a coil spring [8 is held under tension between the upper edge of head I! and upper arm l2 to hold the dog downwardly in locking position. The upper end of dog 16 is formed with an angular finger grip I9.
The end of slide 9 nearest locking flange 6 is 4 Claims. (01. 292-295) bent laterally to form a stop 20 and brace webs 2| are bent rearwardly at the upper and lower edges of stop 20 to bear against slide 9 to prevent bending of the stop rearwardly.
In the operation of the device, locking flange 6 is engaged behind the trim or moulding 22 of a door jamb 23 and slide 9 moved rearwardly on bar 5 to permit closing of door 24. After the door is closed slide 9 is moved forwardly on bar 5 until stop 20 tightly engages the door and locking dog l5 by its engagement with teeth 8 holds the slide against movement on the bar.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction. operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A door fastener comprising a toothed bar having an angular flange at one end for anchoring to a door jamb to position the bar at the free edge of a closed door, a slide on the bar, upper and lower horizontal guide arms supported on the slide above the bar and having alined openings, a spring loaded locking dog slidable in the openings and engaging the teeth of the bar to hold the slide in adjusted position thereon, and a stop on the slide engaged behind the door to hold the door closed.
2. A door fastener comprising a toothed bar having an angular flange at one end for anchoring to a door jamb to position the bar at the free edge of a closed door, a slide on the bar, a U-shaped guide carried by the slide in a horizontal position to provide upper and lower arms, a spring loaded locking dog slidably carried by the guide and engaging the teeth of the bar to hold the slide in adjusted position thereon, and a stop on the slide engaged behind the door to hold the door closed.
3. A door fastener comprising a toothed bar having an angular flange at one end for anchoring to a door jamb to position the bar at the free edge of a closed door, a slide on the bar, a U-shaped guide carried by the slide in a horizontal position to provide upper and lower arms, a spring loaded locking dog slidably carried by the guide engaging the teeth of the bar to hold the slide in adjusted position thereon, a horizontally projecting stop on the slide engaged behind the door to hold the door closed, and webs on the upper and lower edges of the stop bracing the stop against the slide.
4. The combination of claim 1 wherein said slide, said guiding arms, and said stop are con- 10 structed from a single metal blank and said bar is constructed of strap metal, and upper and lower opposed channeled tongues on the slide in 4 which the longitudinal edges of the bar are reeeived to hold the slide thereon.
