Be it known that I, VILLIAM HALL, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Useful Machine for Preventing Horses from Running Away; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching a framework to the upper part of the horses headstall or bridle, which is so constructed as to throw a blind across the horses eyes in a moment at the will of the rider or driver.
It may be better understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure l represents the head of a horse with the frame attached, and Fig. 2 the horse is represented as being blinded. E ig. 3 is an end view of the frame and F ig. 4, the whole complete.
A A A is the frame work.
H and K are rollers forming sides to the frame upon which the ratchet wheel C and the drum wheel B are attached. y
D is a pawl, Gr the pawl line governing the ratchet wheel C.
I, I, I, I are loop holes to fasten the frame work to the horses bridle.
F is a black silk curtain.
E, E, are belts of heavy ribbon passing from the curtain F around the roller H. The wheel B contains a steel spring.
The mode of operating is by winding the curtain F around the shaft K which unwinds the belts E, E, and winds the spring in the roller B, when by the use of the ratchet wheel C and pawl D the curtain F and the spring in the wheel B are held wound up. Vhen the horse attempts to run away, the curtain is thrown across his eyes at the will of the driver, by pulling the line G which is attached to the pawl D, causing him to stop instantly.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The apparatus herein described, when constructed and operated in t-he manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
IVM. HALL.
