One of the main features of the present invention is the frusto-conical roller utilized in the capacity of a paint applicator, which roller is supported by a handle through the medium of a shaft and a receptacle, the shaft being disposed in non-parallel and non-perpendicular relationship with the longitudinal axis of the handle.

Referring first to Figures 1-4 inclusive, the first form of the invention will be discussed in detail. The handle I0 is provided of any suitable material and of any desired length. This handle has a plate [2 at its upper end carried thereby accommodating screws l4. These screws pass through the bottom It of a receptacle generally indicated at [8, serve to fasten the handle to the receptacle. It is appreciated that if it is desired to replace the screws in the manufacture of the invention by rivets, spot welding or other types of structure, this may be resorted to.

The said receptacle l8 has a pair of end walls 20 and 22 which are inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the handle Ill. The end walls are connected by suitable side walls to complete the said receptacle.

34 which are carried by one end of the shaft and which are disposed on respective sides of the bracket 30. A spacing sleeve or thrust bearing 33 is disposed on the shaft 26 between one of the nuts 32 and a frusto-conical roller 38.

The shaft 24 has one end passed through the side 26 of the receptacle and the other end is removably disposed in a substantially U-shaped bearing 40 carried by the said strap'or bracket 30. through the end 20 and a suitable guard or cage 42 may be carried on the external surface of the end 20 covering the last named end of the shaft 24 in order to prevent the escape of liquid 44 from the receptacle which is intended primarily to be paint.

The frusto-conical roller 38 has a pad 46 extending therearound and a second identical roller 1 48 is disposed on the shaft 24 also having a cover 50 extending therearound. The two rollers are .in contact with each other and the lower roller is adapted to be partially submerged in the paint 44 or other liquid.

In operation of this form of the invention it is seen particularly from inspection of Figure 1 that due to the angularity of the sides 20 and 22 respectively and the disposition of the shafts 26 and 24as well as the frusto-conical shape of the rollers, the corner of a ceiling may have paint applied thereto with substantially the remainder of the device spaced an appreciable amount from an adjacent wall. By this construction the inadvertent splashing or applying of paint to the adjacent wall is substantially obviated.

By the disposition of one of the rollers in the paint, it is seen that this embodiment of the in vention is the self-feeding type structure. When a wall is being painted by the use of the instant structure it is necessary only to tilt the handle l0 slightly so that the roller 38 engages the wall being painted and, the end walls either 20 or 22 of the receptacle will accordingly be spaced from the next adjacent wall.

Referring now to Figures 5 and 6 respectively a second form of the invention is illustrated. A handle 60 is supplied with a shank 62 which extends therefrom and has a substantially U- shaped end 64 fixed or integral therewith. A frusto-conical roller 65 has one leg of the U- shaped end portion 64 extending therethrough in order to serve the purpose of a journal. A suitable cover 68 is disposed on the roller BB-and the use of this form of'the invention is substantially the same as the operation of the previously described form. This form is however of the manual feeding type that is, it is necessaryfor a painter to occasionally obtain a supply of paint on the cover 68 before applying the same ona:

wall or ceiling.
