WINDMILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,649, dated May 9, 1882.
Application filed January 4, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it may conctrn Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. BRAGDON, ofBeloit, in the county of Mitchell and State of Kansas, have made a new and useful Improvement in Windmills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
Thisinventiou relates to certain improvements in the construction and arrangement of the vanes of vertical windmills, whereby the mill will regulate itself according to the velocity of the wind and the work being done by the mill, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved windmill, taken on the line as x of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectiona1 elevation of the same, taken on the lineyg of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a plan view with the connecting-rods and governors removed.

The wings or vanes D D D are preferably made of sheet metal, and are regularly curved in cross-section, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and they are each provided upon the inside near their edges with the eyes ff, in which eyes the connecting-rods g 9 are placed in such manner as to connect the windward edge of the wing D to the leeward edge of the wing D, the windward edge of the wing D to the leeward edge of the wing D, and the windward edge of the wing D to the leeward edge of the wing D, as shown in Fig. 2, and each of the wings is provided at its leeward edges with the eyes or sleeves f, through which the rods of the goternors h h it pass. These governors are suspended by the rods 13 from the upper collar, 1), on the shaft, and serve, through their weight and the centrifugal force obtained by the revolution of the mill, to automatically open and close in the windward edges of the wings, and thus regulate the amount of wind admitted to the wings in proportion to the velocity of the wind and the load upon the mill.
In order to stop the mill when desired, 1 provide the shaft at its lower end with the collared sleeve E, to which is attached the lower ends of the connecting-rods jjj, which con nect at their upper ends with the wings in such manner that by pulling down upon the .rod'
7.", which is fitted over the collar of the sleeve, the wings will be drawn in against the curved arm d, in which position the wind will be entirely excluded from the wings, and the mill will thus remain at rest.
I do not confine myself to the use of three vanes, as shown in the drawings, as any number of vanes may be used, according to the size ofthe wheel.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The curved vanes or wings I) D D, centrally hinged to the arms 0 c and connected together by the rods g, substantiallyin the manner and for the purposes set forth.
2. The arms 0 and c,formed with the curved arms d and d, in combination with the wings orwanes D D D, hinged to the arms 0 and c, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the centrallyhinged and joined wings or vanes D D D, provided with the eyes f on their leeward edges, and the fixed upper collar, 1), of the shaft A, of the governors h i, hinged at their upper ends to the said collar and passing through the eyes of the vanes, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
4. The combination, with the arms 0, provided with the curved arms d and the vanes D D D, hinged to the said arms, of the sliding collar E, the connecting-rods j, and the operating-rod 70, substantially as shown and described, whereby the said wings will be drawn in against the curved arms, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The curved vanes or wings D D D, centrally hinged upon the tie-rods e, in combination with the rods 9 g g and the curved arms d, the rods connecting the windward edges of the wings with opposite leeward edges thereof, substantially as described.
