V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN P. WENTWORTH, OF CAPE ELIZABETH, MAINE.
WRITING-TABLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,117, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed December 22, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EDWIN P. WENTWORIH, of Cape Elizabeth, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Writing- Tablets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a writing-tablet having improved and simplified means for holding the paper, and having other details of construction whereby the device is rendered very useful and convenient for writ 1ng purposes.
I do not confine myself to any particular size or form of tablets, as they may be made of suitable size and form to be conveniently carried in the pocket for memoranda, or of a size suitable for holding note, letter, legal-cap, or any sized paper to be carried in the hand as a book, or to be used upon a desk, or held in the lap for writing, as may be desired, and they may have covers or not, as desired.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a pockettablet with a cover. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a tablet of larger size with a cover. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a pocket-tablet without a cover. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 00 m of Fig. 3, with tablet-leaves removed. Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line y y of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an edge view of a .tablet having a pocket, and Fig. 7. is an edge view of a double folding pocket-tablet.
A is the base upon which the paper is held, which is made of wood, pasteboard, or any other suitable material, and may be covered with paper, cloth, leather, or similar material. The base is formed with the two notches a ain its edges for the reception of the rubber band B. G is the pressing-strip for holding a large or small quantity of paper upon the base. This strip is made ofwood, metal, pasteboard, or any other similar material, and is attached to the c and the notches e e serve to keep the elastic band in place and to protect it from unnecessary wear and injury.
The flap D serves to hide from sight, protect from injury, and keep in place that part of the elastic band which is back of the base. The band, being thusheld in the groove 0, notches a and e, and under the hinge or flap, is protected from abrasion or other injury at every point, and is also out of the way, where it cannot be easily displaced.
In the form shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 the parts already described complete the tablet. In the styles shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the tablet is provided with the cover F, which is hinged to the base by the hingef, and which is provided with the blotter g. In Fig. 1 the blotter is pasted or otherwise secured to the outer end of the cover, while in Fig.2 the cover is provided with the corner-tips h, under which the corners of the blotters are placed.
In Fig. 6, in place of the blotter, the cover is provided with the large pocket G for holding paper, loose blotters, &c.; and in Fig. 7 the cover is provided with the pressing strip 0, which is attached to it and formed in the same manner as the pressing-strip for holding the paper upon the main base, which may be used for holding the blotter or for holding other paper, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the tablet, flap, and pressing-strip, of the elastic band protected and covered by the flap, as described.
EDWIN P. WENTWORTH.
