The present invention relates to improvements in nursing bottles and more particularly to the nipple and cover therefor.
An object of my invention is the provision in a nursing bottle, of a rubber nipple having a vent so positioned and formed that it may be positively sealed by a special cap or closure. Thus leakage of milk or other liquid through the vent may be avoided.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a novel and efficient closure, or cap, which is so formed as to have sealing contact with the vent when attached to a nursing bottle.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a cap, or closure, for a nursing bottle,
`which cap embodies novel means for slightly compressing and indenting the tip end of a nipple to thereby seal the opening, or openings therein and prevent leakage.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a nursing bottle wherein the nipple is completely enclosed by a cap, or closure and the nipple and cap are so constructed and cooperate with each other in such fashion that irrespective of the various possible positions assumed by the lled bottle, the liquid cannot ow into the space between the nipple and cap, as so often occurs.
Other objects will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.

Fig. 3 is a side elevational view showing the nipple attached to the neck portion of a bottle; and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the cap sealing the vent and openings in the tip of the nipple.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention I have shown it associated with a glass bottle II! which is formed with a reduced neck II providing a mouth I2 having closure retaining screw threads I3 and beyond the threaded area, a further constricted portion I4 surmounted by a head I5 or annular bead which presents a downwardly facing shoulder designed for holding engagement with a nipple I6, as will be explained hereinafter.
This nipple generally is of the conventional formand includes an annular base part I'I provided with an internal rib I8 adapted for engagement with the head I5, referred to above and with a reduced neck portion I9 terminating in an apertured bulb-like tip 20.
Venting means for the nipple consists of a small aperture 2| extending through a thickened area 22 of the nipple, near the upper margin of the base I'I and in such position that it opens into the mouth of the bottle. The entire nipple, including the venting aperture 2l is completely enclosed by means of a cap, or closure 23.
This cap, or closure 23, consists of an annular' skirt, or attaching ange 24 and a diametrically reduced crown 25, rising above the skirt and connected to the latter by an annular wall 26. The crown is of slightly greater internal diameter than the external diameter of the nipple neck I9 and is formed with a sealing protuberance 2l, which extends downward centrally from the closed end of said crown for the purpose of indenting the tip of the nipple and sealing the apertures temporarily. The annular wall 25 may be placed at any desired angle of inclination radially, or may be horizontally disposed. It provides a vent sealing surface which contacts and closes off the outer end of the vent ZI incident to attachment of the cap to the container, such attachment being obtained by means of interengaging screw threads I3 and `29 on the container and cap, respectively.
It will be understood that all of the usual functions of venting means, etc., of nursing bottles, are inherent in the present invention. Additionally, I have provided positive sealing means for both the apertures inthe nipple neck and the vent in the shoulder portion thereof. Both of these sealing means are eiective incident to screwing of the closure to the position shown in Fig. 4 wherein the projection 21 on the crown 25 closes the opening, or openings in the nipple tip, and the annular wall 26 seals the vent opening. As a consequence, it is impossible for any liquid to leak through these openings into the space between the cap and nipple, such as often occurs with the usual nursing bottle.
Modifications may be resorted to within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
In combination, a container having a reduced neck dening a mouth, a rubber nipple secured to said neck and including a shoulder and an attaching base part, an annular radial wall at the upper margin of the base, a reduced neck rising from said shoulder, an apertured tip closing the outer end of said neck, said wall having a vent opening formed to provide communication between the interior of the container and the atmosphere at times, a cap for completely enclosing the nipple, means for attaching the cap to said container, a radial annular Wall intermediate the ends of said closure for sealing the vent opening when the closure is secured to the container, and means forming a part-of said cap for indenting and thereby sealing the apertured tip, said last named means including a depending projection positioned axially of said cap.
