Patented July 3, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OF FlCE,
MANICURE AND CUTTING DEVICE William L. Hewes, Darby, Pa.
Application July 3, 1950, Serial No. 171,839
2 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a device adapted for a variety of uses, such as removing dirt from under fingernails and cutting the containers or wrappers of packaged merchandise to facilitate opening thereof.
Generally described, the present device consists of a flat sheet carrier member, such as the closure flap of a match packet, having a large notch or recess in one end portion and adjacent one side portion thereof, and a flat cutting implement flatly secured on said one side portion of the carrier member, said implement being made of sheet metal or other suitable stiff sheet material and including a relatively wide body portion having an integral narrow partial handle portion on its inner end and an integral pointed working tip portion on its outer end projecting at one side of said notch or recess.
The implement is preferably formed of a ymmetrical elongated blank folded on its longitudinal center to provide the body, handle and tip portions with two plies, the plies of the body and handle portions being secured or clinched on and receiving the side portion of the carrier member therebetween.
An object of the invention is to provide a, simple and eificient device of the above kind which may be readily and cheaply manufactured, and wherein the carrier member and the handle portion of the implement are gripped between the thumb and forefinger in using the tip portion to remove dirt from under fingernails, cutting containers or Wrappers of packages, etc.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational View of a closed match packet having its closure flap notched and equipped with an implement in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a, similar view with the match packet open.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the implement is formed.
Referrin in detail to the drawing, 5 indicates a conventional match packet including a cover consisting of an elongated strip 6 of thin flexible cardboard or like material, and combs 1 of matches. The cover strip 6 has one end bent or folded upwardly and inwardly to form a short keeper flap 8 and the other end similarly bent or folded to form a long closure flap 9 engageable under the flap 8 so as to be retained in closed position. The backs of the combs of 2 matches are secured between the back portion ID of the cover and the flap 8 by a staple II.
The flap 9 constitutes a flat sheet carrier member for a flat implement i2. In accordance with the present invention, the member 9 is provided in one end portion and adjacent one side portion thereof with a large notch or recess I3, and the implement I2 is flatly secured on said side portion of said member 9, said implement being made of sheet metal or other suitable stiff sheet material and including a relatively wide body portion A, having an integral narrow partial handle portion B on its inner end and an integral pointed working tip portion 0 on its outer end projecting at one side of the notch or recess l3. As shown, the implement may be formed of a symmetrical elongated blank B folded on its longitudinal center D to provide the portions of aid implement with two plies M and I4. The plies at the portions A and B are secured or clinched on and snugly receive the side portion of member 9 therebetween. To securely fasten the implement in place, one of the plies thereof may be indented at longitudinally spaced points as at l5.
In using the device, the member 9, when opened, is grasped, together with the handle portion B between the thumb and forefinger. The tip portion C may then be employed to remove dirt from under fingernails, to cut the cellophane or other containers or wrappers of packaged merchandise, etc. When the device is not in use, the tip portion C is engaged under flap 8, along with the adjacent end of member 9 to keep the latter closed. It will be seen that the device will enhance the utility and advertising value of the match packet, and will provide a useful adjunct thereto. When the matches have been used, the remaining cover and implement may be discarded in favor of a full packet provided with the same kind of implement, in view of the fact that very small cost is involved in makin the implements and assembling them to the match packets.
What is claimed as new is:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a closure flap of a match packet providing a flat sheet carrier member, said carrier member having a large recess in one end portion and adjacent one side portion thereof, and a flat cutting implement flatly secured on said one side portion of the carrier member, said implement including a body portion having an integral handle portion on its inner end and an integral pointed working tip portion on its outer end projecting at one side of said recess.
2. A device according to claim 1, wherein the implement comprises two similar plies integrally connected along their outer longitudinal edges and between which said side portion of the carrier member is snugly disposed.
