2 Claims.
This invention relates generally to doors,
v more particularly to a strip yieldably secured to the base of the door and adapted to contact the sill when the door is closed, and including means for releasing the strip from said sill immediately when the door begins to open.
An object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which will close the space `between the bottom of,l the door' and the sill, `when the door is closed, thus preventing the entrance into the building of rain, snow, insects and the like, and preventing unwanted drafts of air.
Another object of this invention conforms generally with the purpose of weather stripping', that is, to facilitate the regulation of temperatures within the'building, and to save fuel,
Another object of this invention is to provide such a device in a form which will not be inconvenient or unattractive in any way, and which will not interfere with the normal functioning of the door.
And a last object to be specically mentioned is to provide a device of this character so engineered and designed as to be inexpensive and practicable to manufacture, easily adjustable and automatic in operation, and which is of sufficiently sturdy construction to provide efcient and durable service.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which form a material part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a door hinged to a door jamb, and having this invention operatively secured to the base of the door, which door is shown in closed position;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the structure shown in Figure 1, the view being taken on the line 2 2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view of the base of a door, sealing strip and attachment means therefor, the view being a vertical section taken on the line 3--3 in Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional View taken on the line fl-:l in Figure 1, and showing the inclined member secured to the door jamb and operatively contacting the sealing strip to hold the same in tight engagement with the door sill or floor when the door is closed, the door jamb and a portion of the inclined member being 2 shown in elevation, the figure being enlarged to facilitate the illustration and amplify the disclosure of this invention.
Similar characters of reference designate similar or identical parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring now to these drawings in detail, a door jamb having upright members Il and I2 secured to a iioor or Vsill I4, has mounted therein a door generally indicated by the numeral IS, the hinges I3 pivotally securing this door IB to the upright member I0. Exteriorly of the door and across the base thereof is the member hereinafter referred to as the sealing strip 20, which sealing strip together with devices for mountingv and controlling the same constitute the subject matter of this invention. The sealing strip 20 is slightly longer than the width of the door and extends over the inner edge of the upright member I2, as indicated at 22, the other end of the sealing strip being beveled as at 24. Brackets 2t are secured by screws 28, to the outside of the base of the door a short distance above the upper level of the sealing strip 20, and these brackets may be similar having vertically disposed channels to receive the shank portions of pins 3&3 which are adapted to be screwed into the sealing strip 2U and to provide support therefor. These pins areheaded as at 32 and a spring 3A. is compressed between the head 32 and the upper face of one of these brackets, in the case of the outer bracket, and a similar spring is compressed between the upper face of the sealing strip 20 and the lower face of the inner bracket, that is, the bracket adjacent to the hinged side of the door. It will be seen from the foregoing that the sealing strip 2S! is urged downwardly into contact with the sill I4 at the end thereof adjacent the hinged portion of the door, while the other end, referred to herein as the outer end, is urged upwardly by the action of the spring associated therewith. This construction assures that the said outer end of the sealing strip 20 remains out of contact with the floor or sill while the door is being opened and closed.
An inclined member 36 is secured to the upright I2 of the door jamb, preferably being recessed therein, by suitable screws 38 and the outer end Il of this inclined member is adapted to contact the upper face of the sealing strip 2D and to force the same downwardly into tight contact with the sill I4 when the door is in fully closed position. It will be noted that the action of the inclined member 36, `although applied at one end only of the sealing strip 2B, nevertheless can be made effective in effecting a tight closure since the sealing strip pivots about the pins 30 secured at the said inner end of the sealing strip.
It is preferred that a resilient member 42, such as a layer of rubber or felt, be secured on the lower face of the sealing strip 20, this resilient member 42 eiecting a more complete closure than a rigid member.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description of the mechanical details thereof but, in recapitulation, it may be noted that the sealing strip is at .all times carried by the door and when the door is closed the inclined member forces the sealing strip into contact with the sill or floor, and when the door is open or starts to open, the spring 34 at the outer end of the strip 20 is allowed to force the outer end of this strip upwardly out of contact with said sill, thereby decreasing wear and facilitating the opening of the door.
The advantages of this structure will be obvious and it Will be clear that all of the objects recited above have been fully and amply achieved.
Though there has been shown a particular embodiment of this invention, this application is not limited to this particular embodiment, but it is desired to include in the scope of this invention the construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as pended claims.
Having thus described this invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, a door jamb and sill, a door hinged to one side of said jamb, brackets having vertically disposed channels and secured on the base of said door, a sealing strip having vertical pins thereon slidably secured in said brackets, said pins having heads set forth in the apand springs coaxially mounted on said pins, one spring being compressed between one of said brackets and the strip and urging said strip downwardly on the end thereof adjacent the hinged side of said door, the other spring being compressed between the other bracket and the head of the pin therein to urge the strip upwardly on the other end thereof, and means for forcing said other end downwardly against the sill when the door is closed.
2. A sealing strip and means for mounting said sealing strip on the bottom of a door, comprising a pair of bracket assemblies, each comprising an attachment plate and an integral barrel with a channel vertically disposed when the bracket is in operative position, a headed pin having a shank slidably mounted in said channel and terminating in a threaded portion securable to said sealing strip, and a coiled spring mounted coaxially on said shank, the spring being positioned between said head and the barrel in one bracket assembly, and on a portion of the shank on the side of the barrel remote from its head in the other bracket assembly.
