EDUCATIONAL PUZZLE Filed Sept. 50, 1949 Tlg- E- JUMBLED LETTERS CROSS WORD PUZZLE a LOCKNG 2 T NO DICTIONARY REQUIRED T HORIZONTAL Q I VERTICAL Q C) Q I C) Leonard J. Kemp Attorney Patented Mar. 13, 1951 UNITED STATES 7 PATENT 'OFFICE EDUCATIONAL PUZZLE Leonard Joseph Kemp, Prescott, Ontario, Canada Application September 30, 1949, Serial No. 118,917
1 1 Claim. This invention relates to game boards and more particularly to a jumbled letters cross word puzzle. Broadly the invention comprises a perforated game board mounted on a solid backing and a plurality of lettered discs adapted to be inserted in the perforations for the purpose of composing a number of predetermined words which when completed constitute a cross word puzzle.
Needless to say that although the accompanying drawing illustrates a six word puzzle, more complicated ones could be used for the same purpose without departing from the spirit of the present invention.
The object of the invention is therefore the provision of a perforated game board with a number of lettered discs for the purpose of forming horizontally and vertically disposed words. Other objects are the provision of a smple, amusing and instructional game that can be played by y g or old persons.
With these and other objects in view that may appear while the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which:
Fig. l is a front elevational view of a game board constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a lettered disc such as is used in conjunction with the said game board. Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views it will be seen the invention consists of a rectangular cardboard 5 having a plurality of perforations 6 therethrough and a further board 1 of comparable size and weight mounted on the rear of the first mentioned board. It is to be noted here, that perforations 6 do not extend through both boards 5 and I but are only formed through board 5 before the backing 1 is applied thereto.
The perforations 6 are arranged in vertical and horizontal planes and each perforation 6 is located centrally of a square formed by vertical and horizontal lines 9 and 8 respectively.
Immediately below the lowermost horizontal line 8, a square II] has three of its sides cut through the top board 5 and its remaining side perforated to provide a flap beneath which the solution to the puzzle is concealed. A free edge of the flap is formed with a central notch II to facilitate raising th flap to expose the solution to the puzzle.
On the face of the game board and in a location outside the perforated square are printed the directions for playing of the game and in two other locations are printed the 'words to be formed by the jumbled letters both horizontally and vertically although they are not printed in the order in which they should be formed on the board. That is the first word to be formed horizontally on the board may be printed in the third line of the horizontal words.
Fig. 3, of the accompanying drawing illustrates one of the lettered discs which are inserted in the perforations 6 to form the words. It will be noted that to facilitate removal of the disc from the perforations, a small portion 12 has been removed where the finger nail may be inserted.
It is believed that the construction and advantages of the invention may be apparent from the foregoing paragraphs taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings without further detailed description.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been disclosed it is understood that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of co-operating element may be restorted to within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A game board for cross word puzzles comprising a rectangular board composed of upper and lower sheets of material, the top face of the upper sheet being partially divided by vertical and horizontal lines into a series of squares, each square having a central aperture extending only through the upper sheet of the board, a series of discs for insertion in the apertures having letters on their face, said disks having their edges partially cut awav to facilitate removal of the discs from the apertures, and a'hinged flap formed in the top surface of the board below the series of squares by cutting through the top sheet forming a concealed pocket to receive the solution of the puzzle.
