PATENT ori-'ice MACHINE ron wmnmc nonnms Brooks V Marcellus, Rockford, Ill.,. assigner to Barber-Colman Company, Rockford, III., a corporation of Illinois Application March 23, 1944, Serial No. 527,702 reclaim. (ci. 24a-'42) The invention pertains to yarn winding machines, and more especially to machines for pro--v ducing filling wound bobbins, sometimes known as cops or pirns.
The primary object of the invention is to pro- 5 vide a substantially trouble-free driving and control mechanism for such machines.
More specifically stated, the invention aims to provide a mechanical control mechanism eliminating diiliculties heretofore experienced with l electrical controls commonly embodied in machines of this character.
For another object, the invention provides a. conveniently adjustable drive mechanism for the feed of the yarn traversing means. l
The objects of the invention thus generally stated, together with other and ancillary advantages, are attained by the construction and arrangement shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings forminga. part hereof, 2
in which: Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevational view of one endof a winding machine having a ,portion of the housing enclosing the improved driving and control mechanism, broken away and shown in section. 4
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view looking from the right in Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of said mechanism.
looking in a direction opposite from that of Fig.
2 and taken rapproximately in the plane of line 5-5 of Fig. 1. V f The present invention constitutes an improvement upon the bobbin winding machine disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 450,129, illed July 8, 1942, nowPatent No. 2,409,639,dated October 22, `1946, and in particular upon the driving and control mechanism for such machine,
the present application being subordinate bto said application Serial No. 450,129. The mechanism comprises means for driving the winding spindles as well as the yarn traversing means therefor, and control means operative upon the completion of one winding cycle -to condition the parts for the next winding cycle.
Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have shown the improved driving and control mechanism arranged at the left end of a winding machine of the general character set forth in said` copending application. The winding and traverse mechanism forms per so no part of thepresent invention, so thata full disclosure thereof is deemed unnecessary. In brief, 'it comprises a series of winding units (one only being herein shown) each including a spindle I0 (Fig. 2) between which and a centering slide'l I is supported the bobbin b which is to be wound. I2 designates an empty bobbin hopper equipped with suitable means I3 (Fig. l) for delivering bobbins one at a time into position for engagement-between the centering slide I I and a chuck I4. The strand to be wound extends from a suitably supported yarn mass I5 through a tensioning 'device I6 and then over a guide I'l to the bobbin, b eing initially gripped between the butt end of the bobbin and the chuck I4 in the well known manner.
The spindles are drivenifrom a main drive shaft I8 extending longitudinally through the machine.A
Each spindle is connected to the shaft I8 by means of bevel gears I9 and 20, a horizontal stub shaft 2I and spur gears 22 and 23, the gear 23 being fast upon a rearward extension of the 5 26 suitably supported in ways 2l (Fig. 1) upon the machine frame. The traverse slide is thus mounted for horizontal movement forwardly relative to the spindles during the winding operation and rearwardly preliminary to the succeeding winding operation.
Continuous rotational movement is imparted to each traversing camv during each windingoperation. As herein shown, the drive is from a to the traverse sleeve by spur gearing 34' en closed in a gear housing 35 on the slide 26.
For imparting axial feed movement to. the traverse slide 26 relative 'to-the winding spindles, the Vdrive mechanism includes a traverse drive shaft 36, herein extending longitudinally of the machine above and rearwardly of the main drive shaft I8.- On said shaft 36 are pinions 31 (one only being shown) each-meshing with a rack 38 rigid with one of the slides.
* The improved drive mechanism is compactly arranged within a housing 39 which, as above indicated, islocated at one end of the machine; The mainy and traverse drive shafts extend into and are suitably journaled in this housing. Power is supplied by an electric motor 40 mounted upon the housing.` For this purpose, the motor has a belt and pulley driving connection 4| with a shaft 4|a axially alined with the main drive shaft vI8 and having a clutch controlled connection therewith. Preferably, a combined clutch and brake unit of well known construction is employed for this purpose, said unit embodying a clutch 43 and a brake 44.
-The traverse drive shaft 36 has a disengageable driving connection with the main drive shaft,
comprising a feed shaft 42 (Fig. 3) extending in the present instance in a front to rear direction and having a worm 45e` at its rear end meshing with the wormwheel 45 fast on the traverse drive shaft 36. At its forward end the feed shaft 42 is connected by Ibevel gearing 46 with ay longitudinal shaft 41 arranged to be driven from the main drive shaft I8 in a manner presently to appear. The feed shaft 42 is mounted upon an elongated bracket 48 pivoted to turn on the axis of the shaft 41 so as to permit disengagement of the worm 45a from the worm wheel 45 by cam means forming a part ocf the control mechanismas hereinafter set forth. i
The operative connection between the main drive shaft |8 and the feed shaft 42 comprises in general a roller ratchet mechanism. This is of advantageous character, capable of easy adjustment to vary the rate of advance of the traversing cams relative to the bobbins being wound to meet varying conditions in use, as when changing from one size orf yarn to the other.
In the preferred embodiment, the roller ratchet actuator comprises (Figs. 3 and 5) a disk 49 fast on the shaft 41 and a roller .50 having end trunnions loosely supported in the notched arms I of a U-shaped rocker member 52 loose on the shaft 41. A driving plate 53 forming part of a downwardly opening housing 54 provides aninclined or wedge surface for coaction with the roller 50 and disk 49 upon oscillation of the housing, the roller being wedged between the driving plate and the disk as the plate is rocked in one direction (to the right in Fig. 5) so as to impart an advancing movement to the' feed shaft 41.
For actuating the housing 54, I provide a pitman155' having an eccentric connection 55a with a shaft'58 geared to the main drive shaft |8 by v spur gears 58 and 59. While the length of stroke imparted to the housing by its eccentric drive is constant, the extent of movement imparted to the feed shaft is made variable. To this end, the
spring'i towardl an adjustable stop member 6|. The latter serves to limit the return movement ofthe-.roller 58 in the oscillation thereof, thereby varying tis position relative to the plate 53 and the machine frame as shown in Fig. 1 and the projecting end has fast thereon a segment 65 (Fig. 3) equipped with a convenient handle 66 and having teeth 61 for engagement by a springpressed detent 68.
As in the case of the control mechanism disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 450,129, the clutch and brake unit 43, 44 controlling the drive for the winding spindles, the advance of the slide carrying theV traverse cams', and
the rotation of the latter is actuated mechanically.. An important feature of the present invention resides in the actuation mechanically instead of electrically of a second clutch and brake unit governing the operation of cam means for controlling or conditioning various 'operating mechanisms of the machine. This second clutch and brake unit comprises a clutch 69 and brake 10, and providesv a connection between a driving shaft 1| and an axially alined shaft 12 connected by a two step reducing gear train composed of a pinion 13, spur gear 14, pinion 1.5 and spur gear 16, the latter fixed upon a shaft 11.
The shaft 11 carries various cams l(not all of which are herein shown) for the control of various mechanisms, substantially as set forth in said copending application, and, in addition thereto, various cams, as will appear, for the control of the two clutch and brake units. The
driving shaft 1| of the second clutch and brake unit has a belt and pulley driving connection 18 (Fig. 1) with the driving shaft 4| a of the main cl-utch and brake unit.
For operating the clutch 43 of the main clutch and brake unit 43, 44, a shifter lever 19 (Fig. 3) is provided. This lever is mounted upon a rockshaft 80 and has one end, herein the upper end, operatively associated with a clutch shifting collar 8|. Another, or depending arm, 82 carries a roller 83 for coaction with an arcuate cam 8'4 on the cam disk 85 fast on the cam shaft 11. A third arm 86 is connected by a spring 81 to an adjustable anchoring screw 88, said spring being placed under tension in the clutch engaging movement of the collar by said cam 84. 'Ihe clutch is held engaged by a latch device comprising an arm 89 fast on the rockshaft 80 and a latch member 90. The latter is mounted loosely on the rear end ofa control shaft 9| and is urged by a spring 92 into operative relation to the arm 89.
The control shaft 9| extending, in the present instance, in a front to rear direction, is suitably supported in the housing. It is arranged for actuation in response to the movement of the traverse cam slide for the purpose of actuating the clutch and brake unit 69, 10 to initiate operation of the cam shaft upon the completion of one winding cycle. For this purpose, the control mechanism includes a control member.' here- -in in` the form of a vertically movable rack bar determining the increment of movement imparted to the disk 49 and thereby to the shaft 41.
To facilitate easy adjustment of the stop mem'- ber 6|, the latter has formed integraltherewith an arcuate gear segment 62-meshing with a. pinion 63 fast on the rockshaft 64. The latter extends -through the housing at the side adjacent the clutch 43 and the application of the brakev means of a pinion 94. A part on the rack bar, such as an adjustable stud 95, is arranged in operative relation toa roller carrying arm 96 fast on the control shaft. An arm 91 rigid with the arm 96 is engageable with an arm 98 rigid with the latch 90. The two arms 91 and 98 thus provide a lost motion connection between the ver? tically movable control bar 93 and the latch member 90, providing a timed delay near the end of vthe winding operation following which the latch member is actuated to effect a disengagement of 44 to ,stop therotation lof the Winding spindles and the advance of the traverse cam slide 26.
The timed delay interposed by the lost motion f into active position relative to the latch ,block III. Movement of the lever I| in opposite di- ,rections is limited by opposed stops |0I.
between its ends. The spring 08 is'connected at one end to the upper end of the lever, and at its other end to one arm |02I of a bell crank |08 fast on the forward end of the control shaft 9|. To the opposite or lower end of the lever |0| is connected the spring |00 which, in turn.` connects with one end oi' a rocker arm |04 loose on a shaft |05. The free end of the rocker arm |04 is adapted for engagement by a latch |09 operatlvely connected with the control shaft by means of a link |01, the latter having its upperend connected to an arm |08 of the bell crank |03. Its other end has a pin and slot connection |09 with the vlatch member |06. V
Near the end of the winding operation the control stud 95 engages the roller arm 96 and rocks the control shaft clockwise, turning the bell crank |03 on the forward end of the shaft so that the spring 89 is placed under tension. At this time, the clutch lever |0| is restrained from movement by a. latch member i0 engaging with av block III on the lower end of the clutch lever.
At the end of such spring tensioning operation .and in the continued rocking movement of the control shaft, the latch |06 is disengaged'from the rocker arm |04 by the connection ofthe link |01 acting through the pin and slot connection |09. This releases the rocker arm |04 to movement so as to permit unloading of the spring |00 which is connected with the lower end of the clutch lever, thereby conditioning the latter for operation by the spring 99 which at this time is held under tension by the latch I I0. By the time the winding' operation has been completed, the control shaft 9| will' have turned far enough to take up the lost motion between the arms 91 and 98 at the rear end of the shaft, so that the latch member 90 is then disengaged from the arm 89 so as to permit disengagement of the main clutch 43 and application of the brake 44 by the spring 81.
Notwithstanding the disengagement of the clutch 43 and the application of the brake 44, the traverse cam slide 26 continues to advance for a short distance by the action-of momentum, and such coasting of the slide is utilized to trip the latch 0 so as to initiate the operation of the cam shaft. For this purpose, a third arm of the bell crank |03 has a pin-and-slot connecy tion I3 with a link` I I4 connected to an arm ||0l of the latch member |I0. The pin and slot connect'ion I'| 3 is of such length as to permit a clockwise turning movement of the control shaft 9| ,far enough before disengagement of the 4main clutch to tension the spring 99 and unload the spring I 00 When the latch I0 is nally tripped, the spring 99 actuates the clutch lever |0I, thereby disengaging the brake 10 and engaging the clutch 69 so as to start the cam shaft through an operating cycle.
During the cam shaft cycle the clutch is held engaged by another latch I I5, also operatively associated with the clutch lever I0 This latch I I5 engages with the latch block on the side thereof opposite the latch IIO. The two latches are mounted on suitably xed pivots and have de pendng arms connected by a contractile spring I I6 so arranged as to tend to swing both latches As soon as the camshaft has been started. the cam disk I|1 operates to disengage the driving connection between the feed shaft 42 of the trav erse cam mechanism and the traverse drive shaft .36. For this purpose, the bracket 40 has a roller the bar and the traverse drive` shaft 36, causes the slide to be returned.
The lever I|9 is pivoted at |2I and carries al roller follower |22 for coaction with a cam groove |23 in one face of the cam disk I I1. In Fig. 5 the lever is shown in the position occupied during the winding operation with the cam shaft sta-,
tionary. As the winding operation progresses, the lever, being connected with the traverse drive shaft 36 through the vertical control bar 93, moves upwardly relative to the camdisk. The cam groove is suitably recessed at |24 for receiving the roller in such vertical movement of the control gbar, and the recess is shaped to form a cam surface |25 operative after disengagement of the feed to swing the lever downwardly and impart a counterclockwise rotation to the traverse drive shaft 36, resulting inthe return of the traverse cam slide 26. As the rack bar 83 moves downwardly in such return of the traverse slide, the control stud 95 thereon moves away from the roller arm 96, thereby permitting the control shaft to move in a counterclockwise direction (Fig. 3).
`This relieves the tension of the spring 99 and At the beginning of the cam shaft cycle the I actuating spring |00 for the lower end of the clutch lever is energized preparatory to the disengagement of the clutch 69 and the application of the brake 10 to stop the. cam shaft. For this purpose, a rib cam |26 secured on the cam disk I I1 engages with a roller |21 on an arm |28, the latter being connected by an elongated member |29 with the rocker arm |04. The'cam rocks the arm |28 and thereby the rocker member |04 clockwise (Fig. 3) and, in so doing, tensions the spring |00, the latch |06 ilnally entering into position relative to the upper end of the arm I 04.
Near the end of the 'cam shaft cycle, another arcuate 7cam rib |30 on the cam disk ||1 engages with a roller follower |3| on a second rocker arm, this arm being connected by an elongated member |33 to a depending arm |34 which is connected by `a link I with the latch I|5. When the cam |30 engages the roller |3I, the-arm is swung in a. di-
(Fig. 1) normally held in inoperative position relative to the latch |31 by means of a spring |40. The latter isv interposed between a collar |4| on the rod and one wall of the mainhousing, movement of the rod by the spring being limited by anothercollar |42.
'I'he hand lever 39 is fast on the forward end of a rockshaft |43 which extends rearwardly in the housing and carries on its 'rear end an' arm |44 connected by a. link |45 to the latch disengaging The link |45 has a pin and slot connection |46 with the rocker member 98 and the arrangement is such that when the hand lever is swung to the right (Fig. 1) the cam shaft will be tripped by lever |36 without disengaging the clutch for the main drive. When, however, the hand lever is swung to the left, the rocker member 98 is swung in a direction to disengage the latch 90, thereby releasing the clutch lever 19 to the action of the spring 81 and stopping the main drive.
Summary of operation-When the bobbin is being wound, the cam shaft is idle, its clutch 69 being disengaged; and the main drive shaft I8 is in operation, the clutch 43 being held engaged by the latch 90. Consequently the feed shaft 42 is being driven by the roller ratchet drive mechanism, causing the traverse drive shaft to actuate the traverse cam slide through the connection formed by the pinion 31 and rack 38 (Fig. 2). At the same time, each traverse cam is driven unidirectionally through its connection with the main drive shaft including the two sets of bevel gears 3| and 32. If it is desired to adjust the rate of feed as, for example, in changing from one yarn size to the other, the active stroke ofthe roller ratchet mechanism is adjusted by releasing the detent 68 and manually adjusting the position of the roller engaging plate 53. Y
As the end of the winding operation approaches, the control stud 95 on the rack bar 93 moves into engagement with the roller arm 96 turning the control shaft in a clockwise direction' preparatory to the.actuation of the camshaft clutch to start the cam shaft cycle. In the initial portionV of this turning movement of the controi shaft, the spring 99 is placed under tension, the latch having moved into blocking position relative to the end of the clutch lever |0| upon termination of the previous cam shaft cycle. Also the latch |06 is moved upwardly out of engagement with the rocker |04 to relieve the tension of the spring |00. Thereupon, the latch 90 is withdrawn by the arm 91 on the rear end of the control shaft picking up the arm 98, thereby permitting the spring 81 to disengage the clutch 43 and engage the brake 44. Upon the disengagement of the clutch 43, momentum carries the traverse cam forwardlyfar enough to `take up the pin-and-slot connection |3 .between the forward end of the controlshaft and the latch H0. Operation of this latch releases the clutch lever to the action of the spring 99 to cause the cam shaft clutch 69 to be engaged and it is held engaged by latch ||5.
At the beginning of the cam shaft cycle, the driving connection between the feed shaft and the traverse drive shaft is disengaged by operation of the disk cam ||1 acting upon the swinging bracket 48. Thereupon the lever ||9 (Fig. 5) is actuated by the cam surface |25 to move the control bar downwardly and through its connection with the traverse slide to move the latter rearwardly to its initial position. The downward movement of the rack causes the'control stud 95 on the rack bar 93 to move away from the roller arm 96 and thus permit the control shaft to turn counterclockwise, relieving lthe tension on the control shaft spring 99. Immediately after the cam shaft has started, the rib cam |26 rocks the member |04 to place the spring |00 under tension, the latch |06 having been lowered in the counterclockwise movement of the control shaft so as to enter relative to the rocker |04 and hold the spring under tension.
Near the end of the cam shaft cycle, the arcuate rib cam 84 on cam disk 85 engages with roller 83 on the lower end of the main clutch shifting lever 19 to reengage this clutch for the start of v a' new winding cycle.- Finally, rib cam |30 rocks member |33 to disengage latch ||5,I freeing'the clutch lever |0| to the action of spring |00, thereby disengaging the clutch 69 and applying the brake 10 to stop the cam shaft.
When it is desired to stop the machine during a calm shaft cycle, hand lever |39 is shifted to the right to actuate link |38 and lever |36 connected therewith, so as to swing latch ||5 outvof blocking relation to the clutch lever IUI, it being remembered that the spring |00 was previously tensioned at the beginning of the cam shaft cycle. To stop the machineduring the windingjoperation, vthe hand lever |39 is shifted to the left to withdraw latch through the operation of link |45 and rocker member 98, thereby disengaging the main clutch.
