Application June 19, 1946, Serial No. 677,779
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a combination drum jack and carrier which is especially adapted to elevate and transport drums of the size used at the present time.
With the use of this device, drums weighing over seven hundred pounds can be easily handled without danger of injuring the person operating the device.
An object of the invention is to provide a device which is simple in construction, durable in use, efiicient in operation and can be inexpensively manufactured. 1
With the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is a top plan view of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Figure 3 is a rear elevation thereof and Figure 4 is a side elevational view with the drum in carrying position.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the reference numeral Ill designates the drum jack and carrier which comprises the lower semi-circular band member [2 which has secured thereto at its free ends on the under surface thereof, the stationary caster wheels 14. Secured to the band l2 at the center on the front surface thereof are the arcuate shaped portions l6 of the forwardly extending parallel lower arms I8 and the portions [6 are secured to the band l2 by fasteners 20. Mounted adjacent the forward ends of the arms i8 is the rotary caster 22 which functions as a steering as well as a balancing wheel for the carrier.
Secured to the ends of the arms l8 in vertical fixed relation thereto, by fasteners 24, is the upright 26 which is bent upon itself at its upper end at 28 to form a bearing for the pivot bolt 30.
Mounted for pivotal movement on the bolt 30 are the upper arms 32 that are complementary in shape to the arms I8, having the arcuate shaped portions 34 secured to the complementary shaped upper semi-circular band 36 by means of fasteners 3B.
The upper edge of the band 36 adjacent the free ends thereof are provided with vertical slots 40 and these slots receive a chain 42 which encircles the drum 44 when it is being transported,
thereof engages the upper edge of the band l2.
The upper arms 32 and the band 36 secured thereto are raised by means of a hydraulic jack 54, the base 56 of which is mounted on arms l8 and the stem 58 of the jack engages the plate 60 secured to the lower edges of the arms 32 and a spacer 62 is mounted intermediate the arms 32 by a bolt 64 to retain the arms in parallel relation to each other. The jack is operated for the raising thereof by the elongated angular handle 66 having the hand hold 68 on the free end thereof, and the jack release handle 16 lowers the drum as desired.
Secured to each of the arms 18 and 32 in vertical relation thereto are the coil springs 12 which are provided with suificient strength to support the upper and lower bands of the carrier and an angular brace 14 secured to the upright 26 and the base 56 of the jack supports and strengthens the upright.
The jack 54 is operated in the conventional manner, by the handle 66 and the band 36 engaging the lower edge of the upper rib 46 will raise the drum for the moving thereof, the chain 42 retaining the drum within the band during movement thereof.
There has thus been provided, a carrier which will easily and safely raise a drum from the surface on which it is resting, so that the drum can be transported with ease as desired, and a hoist chain can be attached to the carrier for loading or'unloading the carrier and drum as desired.
It is believed that from the foregoing description the operation and construction of the carrier will be apparent to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that changes in the minor details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts may be resorted to, provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described, comprising upper and lower superposed semi-circular bands, parallel superposed arms, outwardly extending arcuate shaped portions on said arms adapted to be secured to the front center of said bands, and extending forwardly thereof, jack means connected to said arms intermediate thereof and forwardiy of said arcuate shaped portions, compression means connected to said arms on opposite sides of said jack, an upright secured to Number the forward end of said lower arm in vertical re- 459 43 lation thereto, the forward end of said upper arm 5 1 2 3 293 being pimtally connected to the. pp r end of 1,530,014 said upright and meanszsecuredjtoithe lower arms 21261355 and lower band whereby articles supported on 2 3 0 353 said upper band may be transported.
