4 Claims.
This invention relates to a shoe last and has for its primary object to conserve materials and effect economy in the manufacture of shoes.
Another object of the invention is to present a fresh new surface to receive the shanks of nails, when the old nailing surface has become so perforated with nail holes as to no longer be useful for retaining the nail points.
The above and other objects may be attained by employing this invention which embodies among its features a shoe last comprising a last body having a transverse dove-tail groove extending across its sole portion, a sole plate of penetrable material covering said sole portion of the last, and a dove-tail rib on the sole plate adapted to enter the dove-tail groove to hold the sole plate on the last.
Other features include a heel portion equipped with the conventional metal heel protecting plate, and provided with a transversely extending groove which separates the heel protecting plate into two parts, and a strip of penetrable material adapted to be tted in the groove for the reception of nails.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of a conventional shoe last modified to incorporate this invention, sho-wing the penetrable portion in place on the last.
Figure 2 is a plan View of Figure 1 showing the penetrable portions removed.
Figure 3 is a side view of Figure 2. y
Figure 4 is a side view of the penetrable plate employed on the sole and shank portion of the shoe last, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the penetrable plate or strip employed in the heel.
Referring to the drawings in detail a shoe last designated generally IB comprises the forward sole and shank body II and the heel body I2 joined together at I3 in a conventional manner.
The sole portion I4 of the sole body I I is provided at is junction with the shank portion I5 of the last with a transversely extending dovetail slot or groove I6 and the bottom of the heel portion I2 is equipped with a conventional heel plate I1 and formed with a transversely extending groove I8 which separates the heel plate into two separate portions Vas will be readily understood upon reference to the drawings.
As illustrated in Figure 3 the surfaces of the heel portion and the forward portion of the last is oifset as at I9 to form a shoulder against which the end edge 20 of a penetrable plate designated generally 2l engages when the plate is in place on the sole and shank portion of the last. This plate comprises a body formed with a sole covering portion 22 which is coextensive with the surface I4 and extending rearwardly from the portion 22 at an angle thereto to conform to the shape of the surface I5 is a Shank portion 23 which is coextensive with the surface I5. Formed at the junction of the portions 22 and 23 is a dove-tail 24 which as illustrated in Figure 1 is adapted to fit in the dove-tail groove It in order to secure the penetrable plate to the last.
In order to provide a nailing surface for the heel a penetrable block or strip 25 is inserted in the groove I8 of the heel portion I2.
- In use it will be understood that the penetrable member 2| and the penetrable strip 25 are inserted in the shoe last as illustrated in Figure 1 to form a surface into which nails may be driven through the sole of a shoe in the making. When the penetrable elements become so impaired through repeated penetration thereof it is a simple matter to remove the penetrable parts from the last and substitute fresh ones therefore. In this way economies in shoe production may easily be effected as it is unnecessary to make a complete last when the penetrable surfaces become useless and it is only necessary to substitute a new penetrable surface.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and desired the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim: 1. A shoe last comprising a last body having a transverse dove-tail groove extending across its sole portion, a sole plate of penetrable material covering said sole portion of the last and a dove-tail rib on the sole plate in the dove-tail groove to hold the sole plate on the last.
2. A shoe last comprising a last body having a transverse dove-tail groove extending across its sole portion, a so-le plate of penetrable mate-' rial covering said :sole portion of the last and a dove-tail rib on the sole plate in the dove-tail groove to hold the sole plate on the last, a heel portion, a heel plate of penetrable material covering the heel portion and means to retain the heel plate on the heel portion of the last.
A3. A shoe last comprising a last body having a sole portion, a heel portion and a shank portion between the sole portion and heel portion, a sole plate of penetrable material detachably secured to the sole portion of the last, a shank plate formed integrally with the sole plate, the la'st body having a transverse dove-tail groove at the junction of the sole portion with the shank portion and a dove-tail on the shank plate for entrance into the dove-tail groove to detachably hold the sole and shank plates on the last.
4. A shoe last comprising a, last body having a sole portion, a heel portion and a shank portion between the sole portion and heel portion, a sole plate of penetrable material detachably secured to the sole portion of the last, a shank plate formed integrally with the sole plate, the
last body having a, transverse dove-tail groove at the junction of the sole portion with the shank portion and a dove-tail on the shank plate for entrance into the dove-tail groove to detachably hold the sole and shank plates on the last, a heel portion on the last adjacent the shank, said heel portion having a transverse groove therein, a heel plate of penetrable material adapted to cover the heel portion of the last and a tongue on the heel plate to enter the groove in the heel portion and locate the heel plate on the heel portion of the last.
