Description

Patented Sept. 9, 1947 CIGARETTE BOX Barnet Liebson, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application November 1, 1946, Serial No. 707,205
4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cigarette boxes.
More particularly, the new cigarette box is characterized by an open top box and a plurality of slightly vertically spaced horizontal cigarette holders having openings extended inwards from their front edges for holding cigarettes. The open box is provided with a cover, and mechanism is associated with the cigarette holders and the cover so as to cause the cigarette holders to assume vertical and upwardly projected positions from the box when the cover is lifted and moved back and turned to a vertical position.
More particularly, it is proposed to connect the cover with the uppermost cigarette holder, and to connect the cigarette holders with each other by arms simulating a parallelogram of arms and acting to maintain the cigarette holders parallel to each other and parallel to the cover in all lifted and separated positions thereof.
The invention also contemplates providing the lowermost cigarette holder with a trunnion engaging horizontal tracks on the innerfaces of the sides of the open box for holding the lowermost cigarette holder down within the box while the cigarette box is opened.
It should be noted that cigarettes placed in the holders will be disposed in horizontal positions when the box is closed and will be disposed in vertical upwardly projected positions when the box is open. In the latter positions they are attractively displayed and may easily be reached and removed.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a device as described which is simple and durable and which ma be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a cigarette box embodying this invention and illustrated in the closed position.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. l is a perspective view of the cigarette box in an open condition, with parts thereof broken away to disclose the interior construction.
The cigarette box, in accordance with this invention, includes an open top box [0 having a bottom wall ll, side walls I 3, and end walls [2. The bottom wall II is rovided with feet I 4 by which the box may be rested on a table or other flat object. The end walls l2 are provided with horizontal tracks IE on the inner faces thereof. These tracks l5 are in the nature of saw cuts, or grooves formed in the end walls.
A plurality of slightly vertically spaced horizontal cigarette holders 18 each having a plurality of openings l9 extended inwards from their front edges for holding cigarettes are normally disposed within the box lil. The front edge portions of the cigarette holders l8 are cut obliquely, merely as a matter of design. A trunnion 2!] is mounted on the ends at the back of the bottom one of the horizontal cigarette holders [8 and engages said horizontal tracks iii. A plurality of parallel arms 2! are pivotally mounted on the ends of the cigarette holders 1% and simulate a parallelogram of arms for maintaining the cigarette holders I8 parallel to each other in all separated positions thereof. The arms 2| are pivotally connected with the ends of the cigarette holders [8 by pintles 22. It should be noted that center lines between the pintles 22 of each of the cigarette holders l8 are parallel to each other. This is necessary in order to simulate a parallelogram of arms.
A cover 24 is provided for closing the top of the box ID. This cover 24 is attached to and supports the top one of the cigarette holders [8. The arms 2| support the remaining cigarette holders [8. Several pegs 26 are mounted upon the top edge of the box It and are cooperative with openings 21 formed in the cover 24 for securely holding the cover in its closed position on the box.
The operation of the cigarette box may be understood from the following:
In Fig. 1 the cigarette box is illustrated in its closed position. To open the box, it is merely necessary to lift the cover 24 and pivot it backwards into a vertical position, forcing the trunnion '20 to slide forwards in the tracks 55 and causing the horizontal cigarette holders l8 to become projected upwards and outwards of the top of the box l0 and to assume vertical positions. Fig. 4 illustrates the cigarette box in its open condition. Cigarettes may be placed in the openings l9 of the holders IS. The box. is closed by merely pivoting the cover 24 downwards into a horizontal position and forcing the trunnion 20 rearwards on the tracks l5 so that the cigarette holders l8 assume their original positions within 3 the box II]. It should be noted that because the cigarette holders I8 are joined by the arms 2| which simulate a parallelogram of arms, the cigarette holders I8 will maintain positions parallel to each other at all times and parallel to the cover 24, and therefore it is a simple matter to transmit the necessary motion to move the trunnion 20 along the tracks l5.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A cigarette box, comprising an open top box having horizontal tracks on the inner faces of the end walls thereof, a plurality of slightly vertically spaced horizontal cigarette holders having openings extended inwards from their front edges for holding cigarettes, a trunnion mounted on the ends at the back of the bottom one of said horizontal cigarette holders and engaging said horizontal tracks, a plurality of parallel arm pivotally mounted on the ends of said cigarette holders and simulating p'arallelograrns of arms for maintaining said cigarette h'olders parallel to each other in all separated positions, and a cover forclosing the top of said box and attached to and supporting the top one of said cigarette holders, whereby said cover may be lifted and tilted backwards toa vertical position for moving said cigarette lioldersirito vertical positions.
