This invention relates to garments and shoulder pads therefor. It is particularly directed to a ladys blouse or dress provided with shoulder pads.

An object of this invention is to provide in a garment of the character described shoulder pads comprising an envelope or cover, and a cushion removably inserted within said envelope.

Another object of this invention is to provide article of the character described in which the entire shoulder pad is removable from the gar- Yet a further object of this invention is to provide an article of the character described in which the shoulder pad is stitched to the garment at least at one point and detachably attached to the garment at least at another point whereby to permit detaching the shoulder pad at one point to permit the same to be swung away "rom the garment to facilitate pressing and cleanng of the pad.

Still a further object of this invention is to roi/ide an article of the character described o nprising a garment provided with a shoulder earn, and an arm hole seam, and a shoulder pad omprising envelope or cover detachably attackled to the material beyond said seams, and a removable pad or cushion Within said cover or envelope,

Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a shoulder pad oi the character described comprising an envelope or cover of triangular shape having an opening centrally located at one of the edges of the envelope, and terminating short of the ends of said edge ci' said envelope, and a triangular shaped pad or cushion within said envelope, and of such dimension as to be retained within said envelope, but which may be easily removed therefrom.

Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable article of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble, and yet practical and eiilcient to a high degree in use.

Other objects of vthis invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out,

Referring now in detail to the drawings, lil designates a garment embodying the invention and provided With a pair of shoulder pads l2, The garment i9 is here shown in the form of a blouse or dress. It is provided with. shoulder seams i3 and arm hole seams it. At the shoulder seams E3 there is excess edge material ita; and at the arm hole seams it is excess edge material Mia.. The edge material E30. is formed with a buttonhole l adjacent the neck-line i6 of the garment. The edge material lila is formed with a pair of buttonholes substantially equally spaced on opposite sides of the shoulder seam i3. The shoulder pads l2 are detachably attached to the garment as shown in the drawings.

Each shoulder pad l2 comprises an outer envelope 2l? and an inner cushion or pad 2l of soit material. The envelope or cover l 2 is of substantially triangular shape. It comprises an upper sheet 22 and a lower sheet 23 superimposed one over the other in registry and stitched toview taken on line .annees L-J gether on two divergent sides by seams 2li and 25. At the third side of the cover are seams 2B extending inwardly from the opposite ends of the third side, but terminating short of the cen.. ter of said third side as illustrated in Fig.6 of the drawings.

A slit or opening 30 is thus formed between the inner ends of the seams 26. Wall 22 is formed with an integral ap 32 folded over` the opening 3d and provided with a buttonhoie 33 to receive a button 34 stitched to wall or sheet 23. The pad 2i is of such sizejthat it will not fall out o the opening 30. Thus the pad contacts the seam edges 2E and is hence retained within the envelope. The ap 32 serves to close up the envelope.

Stitched to the upper wall 22 of the envelope at the three corners of the pad i2 are buttons d which may be received within the buttonholes i5 and Il on the garment for removably attaching the shoulder pad to the garment.

Obviously the buttons and buttonholes may be replaced by snap fasteners if desired.

Furthermore, the buttons may be placed on the seamed edges |341- and Ida. and buttonholes formed in the pad, if desired. If snap fasteners are used, however, the male or female snap fasteners may be attached to either the pad or garment.

It will be understood that when the dress is cleaned, the 'entire shoulder pad l2 may be removed from the garment and the cushion 2i may be removed from the envelope 2G to permit the envelope to be pressed and cleaned.

InFigs. 'l and 8 there is illustrated a modified construction. In said figures, there is shown a garment lc similar to garment l except that the buttonholes l and I1 are omitted. The shoulder pad |2a is stitched to the seamed edges |3a and ida. by tack stitching 50 at the three corners of the envelopeA of the shoulder pad. Shoulder pad 12a may comprise an outer envelope 52 and a cushion 2| removably tted therein. The envelope 52 may comprise a top sheet 53 and a bottom sheet 54 stitched together by two side seams 56. At the third side of the envelope, the upper walll 53 is formed with an integral flap 51 folded over the edge of the bottom wall and stitched thereto at the sides only by said seams 56. The folded over portion 51 may thus be opened up to permit the cushion to be removed or replaced.

In Figs. 9 to 13 there is illustrated yet another form of the invention. In said gures there is shown a garment |011 provided with shoulder pads I2b at the inside of both shoulders. Garment 10b is likewise provided with a shoulder seam i3 and armhole seams I4. Said garment also has the edges Illa and |4a at the shoulder seams and armhole seams. Each of the edges |3a at the shoulder seam is formed With-a, buttonhole 10 adjacent the neck-line. The shoulder pad |221 is of triangular shape, and comprises an envelope 1| and a triangular cushion 12 removably inserted therein. The envelope 1| comprises an upper wall 14 and a bottom wall 15. Said walls or sheets are superimposed and are stitched together at two sides by seams 16. At the third side the er'felope is stitched together by seams 11 extending inwardly from the opposite end and terminating short of the middle, thereby forming an opening for the envelope. At one corner of the envelope is a button 80. The button 80 is received within the buttonhole 10. The other two corners of the envelope are stitched as by tack stitching S3 to edge Nic of the garment. By unbuttoning the button. 8U, the shoulder pad may be swung away from the shoulder portion of the garment while remaining attached to the garment by the tack stitches B3. The cushion 12 can be removed and the envelope 0r cover may then be pressed and cleaned more easily. The tack seams may be at any two corners with the buttonhole and button at the third corner. The opening 18 may be at any one of the three sides or the shoulder pad. The shoulder pad could be stitched at the three corners by tack stitching to the garment, or could be attached to the three corners o the garment either by buttons or snap fasteners.

Referring now to Figs. 14 and 15 there is shown therein a garment |00 having a neck band 90 and front and rear shoulder sections 9|. and 92. The neck band is seamed to the shoulder portions by seam 93. Stitched to the shoulder portions is a sleeve S5 seamed thereto along seam 9B. Stitched to collar by seam 93 is a piece of tape 91. Stitched to the piece of tape 91 is a button 98.

Attached to the underside of the shoulder portion of the garment is a shoulder pad |2c embodying the invention. Shoulder pad |2c comprises a triangular envelope 99 and a triangular pad or cushion |06 removably inserted therein. The envelope 99 may be made from a single sheet of Cloth or other exible sheet material folded about fold line |01 to form superimposed triangle portions |02 and |03. The triangular portions H12 and |03 are stitched together along one edge by a seam |04. At the third edge these two walls are seamed together. by seams |05 extending inwardly from thecorners but terminating short of each other to provide an opening |06 through which the pad |00 is inserted. The envelope is stitched to the garment by tack stitching |01 at two corners and located adjacent the seam 95. At the third corner of the envelope is a buttonhole HD to receive the button 98. When the button is unbuttoned, the pad may be swung away from the shoulder of the garment to facilitate cleaning and pressing. Obviously, the garment is provided with two shoulder pads, but only one is shown for illustration.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention; and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth. it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not ing sense.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination, a garment having a neck portion, a shoulder portion, and a sleeve, and being formed with a shoulder seam, and an armhole seam, said shoulder seam extending from the armhole seam to the neck portion, a triangular shoulder pad envelope having one side stitched to the underside of the shoulder portion adjacent the armhole seam, and means Afor detachably attaching the apex of said envelope Opposite said side to the shoulder adjacent the shoulder seam and in the vicinity oi the neck portion, and a shoulder pad cushion removably mounted within said shoulder pad envelope.

2. In combination, a garment having a neck in a limitportion, a shoulder portion, and a sleeve, and being formed with a shoulder seam, and an armhole seam, said shoulder seam extending from the armhole seam to the neck portion, a triangular shoulder pad envelope having one side stitched to the underside of the shoulder portion adjacent the armhole seam, and means for detachably attaching the apex of said envelope opposite said side to the shoulder adjacent the shoulder seam and in the vicinity of the neck portion, and a shoulder pad cushion removably mounted within said shoulder pad envelope, said envelope having an opening at another side thereof through which the cushion may be inserted or removed:

In combination, a garment having a neck portion, a shoulderportion, and being formed with an armhole, a triangular shoulder pad envelope having one side stitched to the underside of the shoulder portion adjacent the armhole, and means for detachably attaching the apex of said envelope opposite said side Yto the shoulder in the vicinity oi the neck portion, and a shoulder pad cushion removably mounted within said shoulder pad envelope.

4. In combination, a garment having a neck portion, a shoulder portion, and being formed with an armhole, a triangular shoulder pad envelope having one side stitched to the underside of the shoulder portion adjacent the armhole, and means for detachably attaching the apex of said envelope opposite said side to the shoulder in the vicinity of the neck portion, and a shoulder pad cushion removably mounted within said shoulder pad envelope, said envelope having an opening at another side thereof through which the cushion may be inserted or removed.

5. In combination, a garment having a neck portion, and a shoulder portion being formed with an armhole, a shoulder pad envelope, means for attaching a portion of the shoulder pad envelope to the underside of said shoulder portion adjacent said armhole, and quickly detachable means for attaching a pOition of said envelope remote from the first-mentioned portion to said shoulder in the vicinity of the neck portion, whereby said shoulder pad will lie against the underside of said shoulder portion, and whereby upon detaching said quickly detachable attaching means said envelope may be swung about said iirst attaching means away from said shoulder, and a shoulder pad cushion removably mounted within said shoulder pad envelope.

6. In combination, a garment having a neck portion, a shoulder portion, and a sleeve, and being formedwith an armhole seam, a shoulder pad envelope having one side stitched to the underside of the shoulder portion adjacent the armhole seam, and button and buttonhole means for detachably attaching the portion of the envelope opposite to said side to said shoulder in the vicinity of the neck portion, and a shoulder pad cushion removably mounted within said shoulder pad envelope.

7. In combination, a garment having a neck portion, and a shoulder portion being formed with an armhole, a shoulder pad envelope, means for attaching a portion of the shoulder pad envelope to the underside of said shoulder portion adjacent said armhole, and quickly detachable means for attaching a portion of said envelope remote from the first-mentioned portion to said shoulder in the vicinity of the neck portion, whereby said shoulder pad will lie against the underside of said shoulderportion, and whereby upon detaching said quickly detachable attaching means said envelope may be swung about said iirst attaching means away from said shoulder, and a shoulder pad cushion removably mounted within said shoulder pad envelope, said envelope having an opening through which said cushion may be inserted or removed.
