ATTACHMENT FOR BEDS Filed April 23, 1947 Patented Dec. 20, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to attachments for beds, and the invention is particularly adapted for supporting bed springs or slats on which springs or mattresses are held.
An object of this invention is to provide brackets or stirrups of novel construction which are attachable to the side rails of bedsteads and to provide such side rails with seats or slots to receive flanges f the brackets or stirrups and, in the further description of the elements, they will be referred to as brackets.
It is furthermore the purpose of the inventors to adapt the side rails of the bed to the employment of the brackets and, to that end, the inner surface of the side rail may be provided with a slot of such width that the flange of the bracket will fit snugly therein so that lost motion will not result in spaces where vermin may collect. Furthermore, in the provision of the seats in the side rails, it may be desirable to provide a plurality of slots, one for each of the brackets, for in that way the unoccupied portion of the slot, if made the full length of the rail, would not provide lodgments for such vermin.
A further object of this invention is to provide a bracket of the character indicated in which, in addition to the support afforded it by the engagement of the flange with the side rails of the bed, there is provision for a mechanical fastening such as a screw passing through the said bracket and having lodgment in the side rail so that the bracket may be bound against the outer surface of the side rail, leaving no space between them in which vermin might lodge.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a slat or spring support which can be expeditiously applied to or removed from a bed and which has proven efficient and satisfactory in use and comparatively inexpensive to produce and maintain.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a view in perspective, showing the bracket applied to a fragment of a side rail of a bed;
Figure 2 illustrates a sectional view through the bracket and its fastening;
Figure 3 illustrates a perspective View of a fragment of a side rail in which short grooves are provided for anchoring the bracket;
Figure 4 illustrates a view in front elevation of the bracket and a fragment of the side rail; and
Figure 5 illustrates a plan view of a. blank.
In these drawings, the bracket is shown as formed from sheet metal of proper gauge for the strength it needs and, in the present embodiment of the invention, the bracket is made by the well known stamping and bending processes. The blank l is cut from a sheet of metal and bent to form a base 2 and an upstandin back portion 3 at right angle thereto, the said back portion having its edge bent rearwardly to form a flange or lip 4 which is seated in a slot 5 of the side rail ii of a bed. That portion of the blank wh ch includes the base 2 has extended ends bent upwardl at r ght angles to produce angularly disposed end flanges i, and the said flanges have their ends overlying the end edges of the back 3, and the joints between the flange and the back are secured by autogenous welding or the like, so that a sl-at resting on the base 2 will be restricted in its movement longitudinally of the said base, and when brackets are on opposed side rails of a bed, a slat may be supported between them.
The back 3 of the bracket has an elongated hole 8 which is for the purpose of receiving a screw 9 by which the back cf the bracket is bound against the surf-ace of the side rail, and this results in holding the flange in the slot of the side rail so that the flange will be forced to the bottom of the slot of the rail, it being of course understood that the screw lends its function to the supporting action.
We claim:
As an article of manufacture, a side rail having a top edge and provided with a longitudinal groove on its inner face between the top edge and the longitudinal center line of the rail, and a plurality of brackets adjustably secured to the side rail for supporting slats and the like, each bracket comprising a base having end flanges, an upstanding back to the edges of which the said flanges are secured, a flange at the upper edge of the upstanding back projecting into the groove in the side nail, and an anchoring device extending through the upstanding back and lodged in the side rail and cooperating with the last mentioned flange for supporting the bracket on the rail.
