Patented Jan. 25, 1 949 ETEID STAi ,ATENT 7 Claims. (01, 2737130) This invention relates to games and more particularly to a game known popularly as Battleship or Salvo.-

It is an object of my. invention to provide a simple device for playing Salvo wherein much of the written and verbal detail heretofore necessary for playing this game is eliminated.

' A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the class described which may be cheaply manufactured and lends itself readily to mass production methods.

A further object of my invention is to provide means for playing Salvo in a rapid, simple and enjoyable manner.

A detailed description of my invention will now be given in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the two identical pad elements constituting my game;

Fig. 2is a section taken generally through 2 -2 ofFig.1; and

Fig. 3 is a perspective of the cover of one of the pads.

' With reference to the figures of the drawing, my device' 'comp'rises a pair of pads or tablets which are identical, one of which is indicated by referonce character I. Each sheet of pad I is printed with a grid of 100 squares on both sides thereof, as shown for one side in Fig, 1, and it will be understood that on each sheet the grids are printed in register with each other. The pad is secured in a backing member comprising an outer cover l2, a bottom 84, and an inner cover Hi. The inner cover is provided with a carbonized surface E9 which may consist of an adhesivelyaplied sheet of carbon paper which may be folded disposed under the top sheet of the pad with the carbonized surface contiguous therewith. It will thus be appreciated that any marking made on the surface of the top sheet, for example the numeral 4 as shown in Fig. 1, will appear (in reverse) on the underside of such sheet due to its contiguity with the carbonized surface 1 9. Accordingly each player is provided with a pad, and plots a fleet of ships on the under surface of the top sheet of his pad in a conventional manner. The sheet may be folded out into some position as shown in Fig. 2, for convenience in plotting ships, during which time the cover l2 serves as a Writing board, and it will be apparent that such fleet of ships will be concealed from view while plotting after which the sheet is then folded back again flat against carbonized surface I 9. A salvo of shots may then be fired by one player by marking numerals on the top surface of the sheet of his opponents pad, which numerals will appear in reverse on the bottom surface for examination by his opponent to ascertain which shots, ifa'ny; have landed on of the ships plotted on the under-surface. Persons familiar with the game will readily understand the manner of play.

Each player keeps his own score on the score space provided at the bottom of each sheet of his own pad in a conventional manner. The sheet is discarded after one or the other fleet has been sunk. A waste space 20 is provided on each sheet, preferably being as wide as the pad is thiflk, so that after the pad is substantially used upthe last few sheets in the pad may still be rested against the outer cover as shown in Fig. 2 with the entire grid supported thereon in plotting the position of a fleet If desired, the backing member may be made of a continuous fibre or cardboard member as shown in Fig. 3, having fold lines as indicated so that the pad may be readily folded for convenient carrying or storage as will be obvious from consideration of the drawing.

It will be clear to persons familiar with the same of Salvo that I have provided a. device which renders the playing of that game much more egnvenient than heretofore known.

Another method of utilizing my structure for playing Salvo is as follows: Each of the two players is provided with a pad as hereinabove described and after plotting their ships on the top sheet in the usual manner the pads are exchanged. The players then simultaneously proceed to mark their number one volleys on each others pads, the one finishing first immediately handing his pad to his opponent Who must then examine the underside of the top sheet to determine any hits. Such hits as are found are then recorded on that same sheet in the space provided and the pad is handed back for placing of the number two volley. Thus, as each player finishes a volley he immediately interrupts his opponent who is compelled to record the hits thereof before proceeding with his own side of the game. In this manner a time element is introduced so that whichever player is the quicker in deciding where to place his shots gains an advantage. This mode of playing the game may be done in complete silence and with keen enjoyment.

I believe that my invention is subject to considerable modification without departing from the spirit thereof and I do not intend to be bound by the specific disclosure hereinabove illustrated except as set forth in the appended claims.

' For example, while the above disclosure is that of a preferred form of my invention, a modification of my teaching could comprise the combination of apair of identical pads wherein the grids were printed only on the top surface of each sheet. A} piece of carbon paper provided with each pad would be arranged so as to transmit volley markings made on the top sheet to the grid on the sheet below upon which latter grid ships will have'been plotted. Obviously such a combination would require twice as much paper as the structure of the preferred form.

Another modification could consist of printing a grid on the top surface of each sheet and a grid on the bottom surface thereof wherein no part of said grids on a respective sheet were in register. Ships may be plotted on the grid on the upper surface. By providing a fold line in the sheet it may be folded so as to bring the grid on the under. surface into register with but over and coveringthe grid on the upper surface. A piece of carbon may be inserted between the folded portions and markings made on the covering grid will then be transmitted to the grid on which the ships have been plotted.

What I claim is:

1. A device for playing Salvo comprising a sheet printed with a grid on each side thereof, saidgrids being in register with each other, and a carbonized member having a carbonized surface disposed under said sheet with the carbonized surface in contiguity therewith.

2. A device for playing Salvo comprising a pad of removably mounted sheets, each of said sheets having a grid printed on both sides thereof the grids on each sheet being in register with each other, and a carbonized member having a carbonized surface adapted to be disposed below the top sheet of said pad with the carbonized surface in contiguity therewith.

3. In a device as set forth in claim 2, wherein said carbonized member is foldably related at the bottom of said pad.

4. In a device as set forth in claim 2, including a cover foldably related to said pad.

5. In a device as set forth in claim 2, including a backing member comprising integrally a top cover, a bottom member, and an inner cover all foldably related to each other and secured to said pad, said inner cover comprising said carbonized member and being adapted to be placed underneath the top sheet of said pad with the carbonized surface in contiguity therewith.

6. A Salvo game comprising a pad each sheet of which is printed with a grid on both sides thereof in register thereon, a member having a carbonized surface for insertion below the top sheet, a cover member foldably joined to said pad and a waste space forming part of the area of each sheet adjacent said cover member, said waste space having a width substantially equal to the thickness of said pad so that as each of said sheets is rotated against the inside of said cover as said pad is depleted, the grid printed area is fully supported by said cover, said cover thus acting as a support backing for writing on the underside grid of each sheet and as a screen during the operation of plotting.

'7. A device for playing Salvo comprising at least one sheet printed with a grid on each side thereof, said grids being in register with each other, and a carbonized member having a carbonized surface disposed under said sheet with the carbonized surface in contiguity therewith, including a backing member comprising integrally a top cover, a bottom member, and an inner cover all foldably related to each other and foldably encompassing said sheet, said inner cover comprising said carbonized member.
