Application February 24, 1947, Serial No. 730,587
1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to garments, but more particularly to certain new and useful improvements in a self-adjusting tubular or pull over type of outer or undergarment.
It has for its object to provide a garment of this character whose body portion is so constructed as to render the garment self -adjustable about the girth of the wearer as well as in the vicinity of the arm pits and thereby provide a smooth and comfortable fitting garment affording, as well, proper freedom of movement of the arms.
Another object of the invention is to provide a self-adjusting garment having certain portions thereof of elastic-knitted or like material so located and so shaped as to provide for increasing flexing of the garment in conformity to the girth of the wearer from points adjacent the arm pits to substantially the waist portion thereof.
A further object is to so dispose the elastic or self-adjusting portions of the garment as to protrude somewhat into the sleeve portions thereof to provide for greater comfort and freedom of movement to the wearer.
Other features of the invention reside in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the garment embodying my invention. Figure 2 is a rear view thereof. Figure 3 is a side view of the garment. Figure 4 is a detached plan view of one of the elastic insert sections of the garment.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views..
By way of example, I have shown my invention in connection with a sweat shirt or pullover-like garment made of a woven or closely knitted material and including generally a body portion l and sleeves I I attached to the latter in the usual manner by seams [2.
The body portion of the garment includes a main section I3 which is made of a suitable flexible but none too stretchable material and which is shaped to extend over the shoulders and main front or chest and back portions of the wearer and whose lower areas converge downwardly substantially from the arm pit portions of the garment to the lower edge or waist portion thereof to provide companion pendant front and rear portions M of substantially V-shape in plan. Joined by stitching to the opposing contiguous edges of these pendant portions in complementary relation thereto and forming therewith the tubular body of the garment are supplementary side sections or inserts l5 made of elastic-knitted adjustable to aid smooth-fitting about the girth or waist. These side sections substantially embrace the girth of the wearer and extend from substantially the medial front and back portions of the wearer adjacent his waist to the arm pits. Each side section is preferably substantially triangular in plan, as shown in Figure 4, with the upper or vertex end disposed in the vicinity of the underside of the companion sleeve H and the base end terminating substantially at the wearers waist and intersecting the vertex of the companion pendant V-shaped portions M of the main sections iii of the garment, in the manner shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3. These triangular side inserts may be made of a single or double thickness, the latter by folding the material upon itself in an obvious manner, and with the fold thereof at the bottom edge of the garment.
If desired, and as shown in the drawings, the inserts [5 at their upper or vertex ends may extend or protrude into the lower or underside portions of the sleeves ll adjacent the arm pits in the manner indicated at I6. For this purpose a slight V is cut into the sleeve at its junction with the main section I3 of the garment-body and the vertex ends of these inserts are fitted therein and stitched in place. By this construction, the inner portions of the sleeves adjacent the arm pits are also rendered self-adjustable about the arm and afford added freedom or stretching of the garment in the vicinity of the arm pits.
I claim as my invention:
A self -adjusting garment, comprising a tubular body composed of a main section shaped to extend over the shoulders of the wearer and having sleeves and including substantially V-shaped pendant portions terminating at their lower vertex ends medially of the front and back of the wearer adjacent the waist, and substantially triangular-shaped side sections of elastic-like material disposed between said pendant portions in complementary relation thereto, the vertex ends of said side sections protruding into the underside of and forming part of the arm-width of the companion sleeves adjacent the arm pits and the bases thereof intersecting the lower vertex ends of said pendant portions.
