Fora fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

The lpencil as shown has casing sections A and B of conventional type, one screwed into the lower end of the other. Within the casing section A is a lining sleeve I and within the casing section B is a lining sleeve 2 flanged at its upper end at 3 so that it is held between the two sections of the casing and carrying at its lower end a cam ring 4 cooperating with cam surfaces 5 on the outer faces of the lower end of the feed jaws 6.
Mounted loosely within the casing for telescop` ing action therein is the magazine section 'I carrying at its upper end push button 8 and carrying at its lower end to reciprocate therewith feed jaws E. Between shoulder 9 on the magazine section I and stop member I0 on member I4 a coiled spring II is compressed when the push button is forced downwardly and returns the parts to position when pressure on the push button is released. Carried within the magazine section 1 is an inner member I2 having a central bore I3 through which the lead may be fed down into lead tube I4, which extends down through the casing and out of the tip. This lead tube has its sides cut out at I5 so that the feed jaws may (Cl. 1Z0-17) grip the lead therethrough. The magazine section 'I and the inner member I2 are connected to move together by forcing in the magazine section as at IS around a corresponding groove in the member I2. The feeding jaws are connected to the magazine section as best shown in Fig. 6 by turning them in at their upper ends so that they may have as shown, a slight pivotal motion with relation to the magazine section, with which they reciprocate, to permit the lower end of the feeding jaws, where they are roughened at I1 for gripping the lead, to move toward and away from the lead channel. ` The means for controlling the movement of the feed jaws in and out with reference to the lead channel may now be described. i
Cams I9, projecting laterally from the feed jaws 6, cooperate with corresponding cam surfaces 20 carried at the lower end of members 2l one of which is shown in detail in Fig. l0. This member 2l has an arc shaped section at its upper end which wraps around the stop member Ill carried by the lead tube I4 and has a tongue 23 at its upper end which may be bent in against the upper surface of member I0 as shown. One of these members thus fixed in position cooperates with each of the jaw carriers 6.
The position shown in Fig. 2 is the writing position and here feed jaws 6 are shown as clamped against the lead by the cam surface 4 cooperating with the outer cam surface at 5. When it is desired to feed lead through the lower end of the casing, pressure upon the push button carries down the magazine and the jaw carriers. This will carry down the lead with the jaws and the continuation of this movement carries the jaws out from the holding cam ring 4 and at the same time the cams I0 on the jaw carriers pass within the corresponding cam surfaces 20 and continue holding of the jaws against the lead until the parts reach the position shown in Fig. 11. From the position shown in Fig. l1, a slight further movement will carry the cams on the jaw carriers away from the fixed cams 20 and, the pressure upon the push button being relieved, the spring II will carry the magazine and jaw carriers on their return movement. On this return movement the cams on the jaw carriers will pass outside the fixed cam 2U as shown in Fig. 12
and the jaws will thus be held free from the lead until the parts have returned to the position shown in Fig. 2 which is the writing position.
Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 9 show means for retaininga light tension upon the lead at all times so that when the grip of the feed jaws is released the lead will not fall down out of the pencil. This means includes a light spring 24 wound around in an external groove 25 toward the lower end of the lead"|tube; lk'and having one end;y twisted and passingv through a radial opening-26 as shown in Figs. 4 and 9 to bear lightly against the lead, in the lead tube. such as to hold the lead in place where" itis not otherwise held but not such as to interfere with the downward feed of the lead upon the pressure upon the push button.
