Removable blocks or stops 48, or the like, may be arranged between the lower surfaces of the rails 24, and the top surface of the base `plate I4, to prevent the tilting of the track section I9. These blocks 48 are shown in place in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings, and arranged at the ends of the base plate I4, so as not to interfere with the longitudinal movement of the carriages 25.
It should be noted that the arrangement of the cables 40 is such, that the same are substantially enclosed by the track section I9 at all times, and this lessens the prob-ability of the cables being Also, the carriage rollers or wheels 36 are substantially enclosed within the track section I9, and mud, ice, and the like, do not tend to hamper the free rolling of the wheels.
The operation and use of the pipe handling apparatus is as follows:

As illustrated in Figure 1, one en'd of the pipe being handledis placed between the pipe rolls 3D of one carriage 25. The friction and weight of the drum or spool 38 which ls associated with that carriage isso little, as is the friction in the rollers 36` of that carriage, that the weight of the pipe being handled causes the carriage 25 to roll automaticallyto the posi--` tion shown in dotted lines, in Figure 1, where the pipe may be rested horizontally, on the rolls 30 of both carriages 25 of the apparatus.
Whenvit is desired to lift pipe sections from the pipe handling apparatus, as when running` the pipe sections into the well, the carriage 25 which supports the lower end of the pipev being lifted will roll automatically to a position such as that shown in full lines in Figure 1.
During such operation of the handling appa-` ratus, as has been described, the blocks 48 should be in place, to prevent the track section I9 from being tilted about the hinge rod I8. However, when it is desired to dump or roll the pipe being handled from its horizontal position upon the rolls of both carriages 25, and onto the ground or a flat car, or the like, the track section I9 .may be tilted, by any suitable means to a position illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 3, where rangement of parts, may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: A
l. Pipe handling apparatus, comprising a base, including a base plate and a support web, a track section pivotally mounted upon the support web and adapted to tilt laterally of the same and including an upper plate, side webs secured to the upper plate, lower inwardly extending rails secured to the side webs, carriages mounted upon the track section and including top sections, depending sides secured to the top sections, bottom sections secured to the depending sides and extending inwardly from the same, upstanding roller supports secured to the bottom sections, rollers carried by the roller supports for rolling upon the rails, the arrangement being such that the rollers are substantially enclosed by said upper plate said side webs and said rails,` spaced rolls mounted upon the top sections, flexible cables having ends attached near the opposite'ends of the carriages, rotatable spools arranged adjacent to the track section and adapted for simultaneously winding and unwinding the opposite ends of the cables for moving the carriages separately longitudinally in either direction along the track section, the arrangement being such that the cables are substantially enclosed by said upper plate and said side webs.
2. Pipe handling apparatus, comprising a base including a base plate and a support web, a track section pivotally mounted upon the support web and adapted to tilt laterally of the same and including an upper plate, side webs, and rails, carriages mounted upon the track section and including top sections, sides secured to the top sections, bottom sections secured to the sides, roller supports secured to the bottom sections, rollers carried by the roller supports for rolling upon the rails, the arrangement being such that the rollers are substantially enclosed by said upper plate, said side webs and said rails, spaced rolls mounted upon the top sections and adapted for supporting pipe and means including flexible cables and rotatable spools for moving the carriages separately in either direction longitudinally along the rails.

In pipe handling apparatus, a base, a. track section pivotally mounted upon the base and adapted to tilt laterally and including an upper plate, side webs and rails, pipe supporting carriages mounted upon the track section and inl cluding top sections, sides secured to ,the top sections, bottom sections secured to the sides, roller supports secured to the bottom sections, rollers carried by the roller supports for rolling upon 'the rails, the arrangement being such that the rollers are substantially inclosed by said upper plate said side webs and said rails, and means .to move the carriages separately in either direction longitudinally of the rails,
