LADYS PLASTIC HAT Filed July 14, 1945 2 Sheets-Sheet l IN V EN TOR. .5', NM 19w? May 18, 1948. I s. BEHR LADYS PLASTIC HAT,

Application July 14, 1945, Serial No. 605,103
1 Claim.
This invention relates particularly to plastic hats for ladies.
One object of my invention is to provide a plastic hat that is attractive in appearance and that lends itself to a variety of designs and surface ornamentation.
Another object is to provide such a hat with a hinged comb for securing the hat to the hair.
Another object is to provide such a, hat with both a hinged comb and a retractable hat pin, both of which aid in securing the hat to the hair.
Another object is to provide means for pre- 2 preventing the complete withdrawal of the hat pin from the body.
venting the hat pin from becoming completely withdrawn from the hat.
} Another object is to provide a plastic hat that is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of my improved hat will be apparent from the description thereof to follow taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a side view of a hat embodying my invention on the head of a wearer.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the hat of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a rear view thereof, parts being broken away.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the plane of the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view partly broken to show the comb and hat pin.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail view showing the shoulder on the hat pin.
Referring to the drawings,-my improved hat comprises a body portion 5 curved to conform to the shape of the top of the head of the wearer. This body portion is formed of any suitable thermoplastic material. The body portion may have cut-out portions as indicated at 6 to form any attractive design desired.
A comb member I is secured to a shaft 8 journalled in lugs 9 fastened to the inside surface of the body adjacent its upper end. A coiled spring H) on shaft 8 tends to hold yieldingly the comb member in inoperative position against the inner surface of the body.
The bottom end of the body is formed with oppositely disposed openings II and 12 for receiving a hat pin l3. Adjacent its handle end, the hat pin is notched to form a shoulder I4 which is adapted to engage the Wall of opening [2 thereby The outer surface of the solid wall portion of the body may be used for receiving any sort of insignia desired.
When it is desired to wear the hat, it is placed in the proper position on the head, the comb I is moved outwardly away from the inner surface of the body and the teeth inserted into the hair. This is sufficient to hold the hat on the head but by forcing the tip end of the hat pin through the hair and opposite openin I I further security is provided.
When the hat is removed from the head by Withdrawing the hat pin from the opposite opening H and by removing the comb from the hair, the hat pin cannot become disconnected from the body portion as the shoulder [4 will engage the wall of the opening l2 and prevent further withdrawal of the pin.
The body portion may be made of plastic either transparent or translucent or in various colors where the plastic material is opaque.
By forming the body portion of the hat With colored thermoplastic material and slightly curving it extremely attractive surface effects can be produced greatly improving the appearance of the hat.
The curved surface gives attractive and impressive effects and sparkle as various spectrum colors flash over the surface as it is moved in relation to a source of light and eye which views it.
In addition to havinga surface which is curved, if the plastic itself has a basic color or a variety of basic colors, still further startling and attractive effects are produced.
The improved hat can readily be cleaned.
Changes in details might be resorted to without departing from the scope and principle of the invention.
I claim:
A hat having a body portion of plastic material curved to conform to the shape of the head of the wearer and provided with a pair of opposed openings along the edge thereof. a comb curved to conform to the shape of thebody portion and hingedly mounted on the inner surface of said body portion, a hat pin disposed across the inner surface of said body portion and slidable through said opposed openings, and means on the hat pin for preventing its complete withdrawal through one Number of said opposed openings, said body portion being 608,529 formed with openings adjacent the free end of the 672,159 comb. 956,917 SIEGFRIEFD BEHR. 5 1,185,172
