However such setting is usually relatively rough and no provision is made for fine adjustment-of the block along the inclined'face.
It is an object 'of this invention toprovide al planer gauge having means fornely and`ac ycurately-adjusting the setting' of the block so that the bearing faces thereon may be adjusted for height to a fraction of a thousandth of an inch.r

Referring to the drawing, I designates a body having a flat underside 2 to rest upon a bed of a machine (not shown), and an inclined upper side 3 which Vis longitudinally slotted at 4 intermediately of its length so that spaced longitudinal Ways 5 are formed onopposite sides which are undercut at 6, and the depth of the slot 4 is such as to receive a longitudinal screw 1 the axis of which is parallel with the tops of the ways 5. One extremity of the screw 1 is supported in a bearing 8 formed in one extremity of the body I, and the opposite extremity of the screw terminates in a portion 1a of reduced diameter which is supported for rotation in abearing formed in a plug 9 mounted in an appropriate opening I0 formed in the body I from its opposite extremity.r` Fixedlysecured to the screw 1 adjacent the plug 9 and upon its .portion 1a of reduced diameter isafworm wheel II which meshes with a worm I2 upon a spindle I3 which is transversely mounted in the bodyl I. Mounted for longitudinal sliding movement along-theLWays 5 isa block 20 provided with stepped bearing faces 2| and 22 which are parallel with theunderside 2 of `the body. --Atransverseopening 3I 'is'formed from one side of the block-20 'and is counterbored at its outer extremity as shown at 32. Mounted for axial movement in the opening 3l is a release pin 33 having one side 34 tapered to ooact with the tapered side of the slot 30 to raise the screw engaging member 21 and disengage its partial threads 28 from the screw 1 upon inward movement of the said pin. Housed in the counterbore 32 is a helical spring 35 which bears against a head 36 of increased diameter integral with the release pin 33 thereby tending to forcethe latter outward and permit the partial threads 28 of the member 21 to remain in their screw engaging position. Adjustment of the height of the block 20 is obtained in the following manner. The head 36 of the release pin 33 is pressed inward thereby retracting the screw engaging member 27 so that its partial threads 28 become disengaged from the screw 1, and the spring 29 is compressed. Then the block 20 may be freely moved to its approximate setting. `Upon release of the head 36 the Spring 35 again moves the release pin 33 outward and the spring 29 causes re-engagement of the partial threads 28 with the screw 1. Then by rotation of the spindle I3 through its knurled head I4, and through the worm l2 and worm wheel Il, the screw I is rotated and by this rotation the block 20 is moved along the ways 5 by engagement of the partial threads Z8 with the said screw.
While in the foregoing the preferred embodiment of the invention has been described and shown it is understood that the construction is susceptible to such alterations and modications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is: g
l. A planer gauge comprising a body having its upper side longitudinally inclined, a screw mounted for rotation upon said body having its axis parallel with said upper inclined Side, means 1 for rotating said screw, a block longitudinally slidable upon said inclined upper side having at least one bearing face thereon, a screw engaging member mounted for movement upon said block having partial threads thereon to engagesaid screw, means normally holding said partial threads in engagement with the screw whereby rotation of the latter moves the block along said' upper side, said member being transversely slotted and one side of said slot being inclined tothe member and a release pin mounted for movement in said block and extending through said slot, said pin having an inclined face formed thereon to coact With the inclined face of the slot whereby upon movement of the pin in one direction the member is moved and its partial threads are disengaged from the screw.
2. A planer gauge comprising a body having its upper side longitudinally inclined, a screw mounted for rotation thereon and having its axis parallel with said inclined upper side, a worm wheel on said screw, a spindle mounted transversely in the body, a Worm on said spindle in engagement with the worm wheel, a calibrated dial fixed on said spindle to register with an index mark on said body, a block longitudinally slidable upon the upper inclined face of the body, said block having at least one bearing face thereon, a screw engaging member on said block, means normally holding said member in engagement with said screw whereby rotation of the spindle imparts movement to the block, and means for releasing the member from the screw to permit independent longitudinal movement of the block upon said body,

A planer gauge comprising a body having its upper side longitudinally inclined, a screw mounted for rotation thereon having its axis parallel with said inclined upper side, a spindle mounted for rotation transversely through the body, coacting means on said screw and spindle for rotating the former by rotation of the latter, a block longitudinally slidable upon the upper inclined side of the body, said block having at least one horizontal bearing face thereon, a screw engaging member on said block, means normally holding said member in engagement with said screw whereby rotation of the latter moves said block, and means for releasing the member from the screw to permit independent movement of the block on the body.

A planer gauge comprising a body having its upper side longitudinally inclined, a screw mounted for rotation thereon having its axis parallel with said inclined upper side, a spindle mounted transversely through the body," coacting means on said spindle and screw turning the latter by rotation of the former, a bearing block longitudinally slidable on'the upper inclined side or" the body, means on the block normally engaging the screw` whereby rotation of the latter moves the block along the body, means for releasing said engaging means, and means'carried by said block for locking the latter relative to said body. l
5. A planer gauge comprising a body having its upper side longitudinally inclined, a screw mounted for rotation thereon having its axis parallel with said inclined upper side, a spindle mounted transversely through the body, coacting means on said spindle and screw turning the latter by rotation of the former, a calibrated dial xed on the spindle to register with an index mark on the body,va bearing block having at least one horizontal bearing surface thereon lon-` gitudinally slidable on the upper inclined side of the body, a member carried by the block having partial threads thereon, means normally holding said member so that the partial threads engage the screw whereby rotation of the latter moves the block, means extending into the block for moving the member whereby the partial threads are disengaged from the screw, and means carried by the block for locking the latter relative to said body.
