SCRE- -CUTTING DiE STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,785, dated September 28, 1880.
Application filed May 27, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARTIN W. VALKER and GEORGE E. WILLIAMS, of Sing Sing, Westchester county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Die-Stock, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this inventionjis to provide an improved device whereby the dies and the screws can be more easily introduced and removed from the stock, whereby a screw with a cleaner cut thread is produced, and whereby the screw-blank is held at right angles to the face of the dies during the screw-cutting operation.
The invention consists of a stock divided diagonally through its center, and having the two parts hinged together and locked by a s tnii'ig-actuated lever and it consists, further, of an eccentric segmental guide-plate provided with circumferential grooves of various sizes pivoted on the lower face of each stock-section for the purpose of embracing and guiding the entering screw-blank.
Figure 1 is a reverse plan of the stock opened, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the stock closed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A A represent, respectively, the two halves of the stock with the diesections B B inserted in position. At a the two stock'scctions A A are hinged together, as shown.
The section A is provided with a projecting lip, b, opposite the hinge a, and the section A is socketed at c at the junction of its handle with the center plate, and within this socket c is pivoted the clbowlever 0, whose bent finger d engages over the lip 12 when the stock is closed and holds the two sections A A firmly together. i
A spring, f, secured on the handle of section A, bears with its free end against the handle of the lever O, and thereby holds it in the locked position.
A stud, 9, projects downward from the inner face of the section A, and enters a corresponding socket, h, in the lip b when. the said stock is closed, thereby more firmly holding the sections A A in position.
I.) D are the segmental eccentrics, pivoted at k k on the lower faces of the sections A A, with their curved edges toward each other, said eccentric-edges having opposite and corresponding vertical and semicircular grooves m m, of various sizes, to accommodate and grasp screw blanks of various diameters. By turning these eccentrics together to the right or left their opposite grooves m at will form a sleeve or guide directly or centrally under the center of the screw'die B for the screw-blank that is to be operated upon, and hold said blank firmly and true in said die.
F F are the adjusting-screws, by means of which the dissections B B are advanced toward each other and toward a common center.
In cutting screws with the ordinary diestock the stock must be run back on the screw in order to disengage the latter, and in this operation much time is spent and the thread of the screw is injured by the returning fine metallic chips that adhere to the dies. These objections are removed by the use of this improved device, for as soon as the screw-thread is formed on the blank the stock is opened by pressure on the handle of the lever O, and the screw is at once removed. Consequently this die-stock will enable the operator to produce a better and an increased product in a given time.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A die-stock constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the hinged stock-sections A A and grooved eccentric-guides D D, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the projecting lip I), having socket h, and arranged opposite hinge a on the section A, of the elbow-lever 0, having the bent finger d, and the study on the inner face of section A, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with a die-stock, of the pivoted grooved segmental eccentrics D D, substantially as and for the purpose described.
MARTIN WILLIAM WALKER. GEORGE EDMUND WILLIAMS.
