OVERFLOW APPARATUS FOR CESSPOOLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,796, dated February 15, 1881.

To all lwhom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ALEXAN- DER, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Overiow Apparatus for Gesspools, &c., of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare thatin the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to means for deodorizin g and disinfecting the overflow-water from cesspools, in order that the same may be discharged to a sewer.
In carrying out my invention I provide the cesspool with an overtlow-pipe having preferably a strainer at the inner end thereof, which extends to the sewer to which the over` now-water is to be discharged, and located in the said overoW-pipe is a deodorizing and disinfecting trap of peculiar construction, which separates from the overflow-water the ottensive and injurious matter contained therein.
In the further description of my said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanyin g drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure I is a vertical section of the invention, and Fig. II a plan ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in both the views.
A is the cesspool or sink into which fecal and other waste matter is introduced.
B is the overtlow-pipe, having a strainer at its inner end to prevent the entrance to the pipe of the larger solid portions ofthe contents of the sink.
O is a well, situate, like the sink, in the ground, to which the outer end of the overilowpipe is connected. The well O has a removable cover, a, accessible from the surface ofthe ground; and a removable basket, b, containing charcoal or other` suitable disinfecting and deodorizing material, is placed in the well in such position as to receive the overIiow-water as it enters the same. The overliow-water, after percolating through the charcoal, is discharged through the pipe D to the sewer E. The inner end of the discharge-pipe D is bent downward, as shown, so as to be below the main part of the pipe, and thereby form a trap to prevent noxious gases passing from the sewer when the water in the well is below the upper inner surface of the pipe D, as shown in the drawings.
The basket bis provided with devicessuch as eyebolts or handles-whereby the same may be lifted out when the disinfecti ng and deodorizing material is changed.
The operation of the invention is as follows: When the water in the cesspool or pit rises to a point on a line with the horizontal portion of the pipe B it overflows to the well (l, and is received by the basket b therein, which holds the offensive matter contained in the water and allows the cleansed liquid to pass to the bottom ot' the well. Upon the water rising in the well to the horizontal portion ot' the dischargepipe D it is carried to the sewerE. Theinner end of the discharge pipe D being turned downward in the well, as shown, a trap is 'formed which prevents gases tlowing from the sewer when no discharge ot' water is taking place, as will be readily understood.

I claim as my inventionl. In combination with a cesspool, an overflow-pipe, a well connected to the said cesspool by the said pipe, a body of deodorizing and disinfecting material located in the said well, and a discharge-pipe leading from the said well to a sewer, substantially as herein specified.
2. In combination with a cesspool, an overlow-pipe leading from the same, a well situated in such position as to receive the overoW-water, a removable basket for charcoal or other like disinfecting and deodorizing material, and a discharge-pipe leading from the said well to a sewer, having its inner end in the well turned downward to form a trap for gases, substantially as herein specified.
