(01. 36-36) My invention relates to safety razor sharpening arrangements. i
In accordance with my invention, a safety razor has associated therewith a sharpening means or device which is manually operable in a convenient mannerto sharpen the upper and lower surfaces, either jointly or separately, of a razor blade edge.
In a preferred form of the invention, the sharpening means or device is mounted on the razor for movement in oppositedirections along a path disposed in parallel relation with respect to the edge of the razor blade which is to be sharpened. v
Various other objects, advantages and features of my invention will become apparent from the following detailed description.
My invention resides in the sharpening means for safety razors, arrangements and features of the character hereinafter described and claimed.
For an understanding of my invention and for an illustration of some of the forms thereof, ref erence is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view showing a safety razor and one form of my novel sharpening means for the safety razor blade;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the safety razor arrangement shown in Fig. 1; I
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, verticalsectional view, partly in elevation, taken on the line33 of 2 looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 4 is an elevational view showing a safety razor and a modified form of my novel sharpening means for the safety razor blade;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the safety razor arrangement shown in Fig. l; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged, vertical sectional View, partly in elevation, showing the sharpening means illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5.
Referring to Figs. 1-3, inclusive, I have shown a safety razor having a handle I which, at one end thereof, comprises suitable means for clamp ing a safety razor blade 2 in shaving and in sharpening position. As herein s11own,*-this clamping means comprises a cap plate 3 and abase 4 between which the blade 2 is disposed and held in suitable arcuate configuration by a screw 5 which depends from and is fixed to said cap plate 3, the upper end of the handle I bein provided with a passage which is internally threaded for the reception of the screw 5-. As will be understood, the assembly comprising the razor blade 2, cap plate 3, base 4 and screw 5 may be held in one hand and the handle I in the other hand whereupon said handle I may be rotated, by finger action, to attach the same to-the screw 5, this operation serving to bring the various parts to the respective positions thereof shown in Fig. 1.
As indicated in Fig. 2, the cap plate 3 comprises a pair of spaced depending members 311 which, when the parts are properly related to each other, extend, respectively, through and into alined passages provided therefor in the above blade 2 and the base 4 With an arrangement of this character, the parts are held in proper assembled relation with respect to each other when the handle has been moved to clamping relation with respect to the base 4 as shown in Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 1, one side of the base 4 is of curved configuration, this curved section terminating in a'guard member 4a, the adjacent shaving edge of the razor blade 2 being disposed adjacent or in contact with said guard member 4a as well understood in the art.
Asshown in Figs. 1 and 2, the base 4, at the side thereof opposite the curved section 4a thereof comprises side extensions 41) connected together by an integral rod or member 6 which is disposed below and parallel with the adjacent edge of the razor blade 2. The rod 6 supports a sharpening means I for free sliding movement thereon, said sharpening means 1 comprising a lower handle section Ia and an upper pocket section lb within which the adjacent edge of the razor blade 2 is received as shown in Fig. 3.
With the parts positioned'as 5110mm 3, it will be understood that the sharpening means I may be grasped by its handle section Ia and moved in a clockwise direction, Fig. 3, to bring the lower surface of the pocket section 'Ib into engagement with the lower surface of the razor blade edge. Thereupon, said sharpening means may be manually moved in opposite directions on the rod 6, while contacting with the lower surface of said razor blade edge, to thereby sharpen the same to the extent desired. By moving th handle section Ia in a counter-clockwise direction, Fig. 3, to bring the upper surface of the pocket section Ib into engagement with the upper surface of the razor blade edge, movement of the sharpening means I may be effected in opposite directions as described to thereby sharpen said upper surface of the razor blade edge. Alternatively, in order to sharpen the razor blade edge, one surface thereof may be engaged by the sharpening means 1 while the same is moved in one direction and the other surface of said razor blade edge may be engaged by said sharpening means 1 as it is moved in reverse direction.
The sharpening means 1 may be constructed of such suitable sharpening material as may be desirable. Thus, for example, said sharpening means I may be formed from sharpening stone, either artificial or natural, or from other equivalent sharpening material such, for example, as metallic material, hard rubber or the like.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, a modified form of sharpening means 8 is provided in lieu of the sharpening means 1.
The sharpening means 8 is formed, preferably,
from a strip or web of suitable resilient mate rial such, for example, as plastic material, steel or, preferably, aluminum or fiber. As shown in Fig. 8, this strip or web of metallic material is shaped to form a section 80 which loosely engages the rod 6, said section 8a having a generally U- shaped section 8b extending therefrom. Projecting from the U-shaped section 82) is an upper section 80 adapted to coact with the adjacent .part of the section 8a to form a pocket within which the adjacent safety razor edge is received.
Normally, due to the resilience of the U-shaped section 812, the upper section 80 is spaced somewhat from the adjacent part of the section 8a. When it is desired to sharpen the safety razor edge, the handle section 8b is grasped as indicated in Fig. 6 to thereby close the aforesaid pocket and cause the respective upper and lower surfaces of the razor blade edge to be engaged by the adjacent sections of metallic material. Thereupon, the sharpening means 8 is moved to and fro on the rod 6 to thereby simultaneously sharpen both surfaces of the razor blade edge.
Although I have described in some detail one particular form of safety razor with which the sharpening devices or means of my invention may be associated, it will be understood that said sharpening devices or means may be associated, if desired, with various other forms of safety razors.
With the razor blade 2 positioned as shown either in Figs. 1 or 4, it will be understood that the edge thereof toward the sharpening means may be sharpened in the manner described above. Later, when it becomes desirable to use this sharpened edge of the blade for shaving purposes, the handle i is disengaged from the screw 5 whereupon the position of the razor blade 2 is reversed and then clamped in its reversed position by attachment of the handle I to the screw 5. This places the sharpened edge of the razor blade 2 in shaving position and the dulled edge thereof in sharpening position. Later, when desired, the sharpening means may be operated to sharpen said dulled edge.
While the invention has been described with respect to certain particular preferred examples which give satisfactory results, it will be understood by those skilled in the art after understanding the invention, that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and it is intended therefore in the appended claims to cover all such changes and modifications.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. In a safety razor blade sharpener, a handle, means at one'end of said handle for clamping a razor blade in fixed position, a support disposed adjacent and parallel with respect to an edge of said blade, and means slidable in opposite directions on said support for sharpening the upper and lower surfaces of said blade edge, said sharpening means comprising a pocket within which said blade edge is received.
2. In a safety razor blade sharpener, a handle, means at one end of said handle for clamping a razor blade in fixed position, a support disposed adjacent and parallel with respect to an edge of said blade, and means slidable in opposite directions on said support for sharpening the upper and lower surfaces of said blade edge, said sharpening means comprising a pocket within which said blade edge is received, said sharpening means further comprising a handle section operable to move the surfaces defining said pocket at will toward the respective upper and lower surfaces of said blade edge.
3. In a safety razor blade sharpener, a handle, a base and a cap plate at one end of said handle for clamping a razor blade in. fixed position, side extensions projecting from said base, a support secured to said side extensions, said support being disposed adjacent and parallel with respect to an edge of said blade, and means slidable in opposite directions on said support for sharpening the upper and lower surfaces of said blade edge, said sharpening means comprising a pocket within which said blade edge is received, said sharpening means being freely oscillatable on said support so that the surface defining either side of said pocket may be presented to said blade edge.
