The driving and stop-- ping mechanism in the machine of the patent is provided with forward and reverse driving mechanisms and, to trip the power driven mechanism into operation, a roll on a control member connected with thepower driven mechanism enters a recess in a disk on .the sewing shaft during reverse rotation of the shaft. To hold the roll out of the recess in the disk during forward rotation of the sewing shaft, connections are provided between the reverse driving mechanism and the control memberto prevent actuation of the member until the reverse mechanism is rendered effective. Unless'the connections to the reverse mechanism are carefullyadjusted in that machine, the roll may enter the recess in the disk and the member for controlling the power driven auxiliary mechanism may be actuated during forward rotation of the sewing shaft so as to cause the presser-foot to be raised and the thread cutter actuated before the sewing shaft reaches a stopping position.
When the; auxiliary mechanism is thus actuated with the stitch-forming devices not instopping positions, certain of said devices may be broken or thrown out ofproper adjustment.
The objects of the present invention are to provide a novel and improved driving and stopping mechanism for a shoe sewing machinehaving auxiliary power driven mechanism in which the difi'iculties referred to will be avoided and which will operate effectively when sewing at high speeds to bring tl1e:machine toa: stopping position with certainty before causing actuation of the auxiliary power driven mechanism and to simplify the construction of such mechanisms.
With these and other objectsin view, the present invention contemplates the provision in treadle controlled driving and stopping mechanism for a shoe sewing machine having forward erations.

the operations are not dependent upon the rotation of the sewing shaft, so thatin case the sewing shaft comes to rest out of stopping position or the operations are performed when the stitch-forming devices are moving, improper operations may occur. The invention, therefore, is embodied in a machine having a power driven clutch in which the clutch control member is arranged to be actuated positively by the sewing shaft only at the end of its reverse rotation. As hereinafter described, an abutment is carried by the sewing shaft and thetreadle, when actuated at the end of the seam, moves the clutch control member into the path of said abutment; the abutment continuing the movement of the control member in the same direction until the clutch is rendered operative.
Other features of the invention relate to eertain novel and improved constructions and arrangements of parts as hereinafter described in the following detailed specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The machine illustrated in the drawings is a high speed lockstitch shoe sewing machine, similar in many respects to that disclosed in inventors patent and the same as that of inventors pending application above referred to.
Starting and stopping of the machine is effected by a treadle controlled driving and stopping mechanism substantially the same as that disclosed in the present inventors prior Patent No. 2,078,942. This mechanism comprises a main high speed driver 2 mounted to rotate upon the main sewing shaft 4 of the machine and to be connected and disconnected with the shaft by means of a clutch B actuated by connections to a foot treadle (not shown), which connections include arms 8, secured in angular relation to a.
shaft 9, a vertical rod l9 pivotally connected with one of the arms 8, an arm l2 connected with the rod l and a treadle rod I4 connected with the arm I2. When the treadle rod is lowered, the main driving clutch connects the high speed driver 2 with the sewing shaft 4 and when the treadle rod is raised the clutch disconnects the driver 2 from the shaft 4. Upon disconnecting the high speed driver from the shaft 4, a low speed driving mechanism including a low speed driver I 6 (see Fig. 2) acts to drive the sewing shaft 4 in a reverse direction for a portion of a complete rotation. The means for connecting and disconnecting the low speed driver IS withthe shaft 4 includes a follower lever l8 (Fig. 4) having its upper end actuated by a cam 20 on the sewing shaft and its lower end formed with a recess for the reception of a lock bolt 22 actuated through a lever 24 mounted at the outer' end of a hollow shaft 25. as described more fully in inventors Patent No. 2,078,942.
The stitch forming and work feeding devices of the machine are best illustrated in Figure 5, and include a curved hook needle 26, a curved awl 28, a rotating shuttle or loop taker 30, a presser-foot 32, and a work support 34. The work is fed continuously by alternate feeding movements of the presser-foot and work support.
The presser foot 32 is fulcrumed on a horizonr tal shaft 36 (see Fig. in the frame of the machine, and is intermittently locked against the work by mechanism of the same construction as that in the machine of inventors prior U. S.
Letters Patent. No. 2,148,197, of February 21,
1939. The lock for the presser foot comprises a pair of locking wedge blocks 38 and 4B, the lower one of which is connected to the presser foot by a link 42 and the upper one of which has a rod portion connected by a pair of links 44 to a lifting lever 45 fulcrumed on a horizontal shaft 48. To move the presser foot against the work, the lever 48 is connected to one end of a tension spring 50, the other end of which is secured work until the wedge block 40 is actuated by connections to the sewing shaft described more fully in Patent No. 2,148,197.
The illustrated machine is provided with power driven auxiliary mechanism for performing certain final operations at the end of a seam, such' as severing the threads and raising the presser foot. To sever the threads there is a thread cutter in the form of a curved knife edged member 52 of angular cross section arranged to move towards and from the work, and to sever both threads beneath the surface of the work, which cutter is of substantially the construction and mode of operation as disclosed in inventolrs Patent No. 2,148,197 and application No. 118,622 above referred to.
The thread cutter of the present machine, like the thread cutter of Patent No. 2,148,197 and the application Serial No. 118,622, is moved through a helical path by its actuating mechanism, the central axis of which path is at right angles with the surface of the work and substantially parallel to the length of locking thread extending between the shuttle and the work. The cutter knife member 52 is secured in a holder at the lower end of a vertical shaft 54 mounted for reciprocating and rotary movement in bearings on the machine frame. To rotate the cutter shaft 54, it is connected to be operated by the auxiliary power driven mechanism comprising a gear segment 56 (see Fig. 2) on the shaft and meshing with a corresponding segment 58 formed on one arm of a lever 60, and provided with a gear segment 62 meshing with teeth on a rack bar 84 slidably mounted in a horizontal bearing in the frame, and a link 66 connected between the rack bar and a cam lever 68 having a cam roll I0 engaging a cam 12 for actuating the lever. The cam 12 is mounted on an auxiliary shaft 14 at the rear of the machine and is arranged to be rotated one complete revolution at the end of a seam. The cutter shaft rotating mechanism is also connected to reciprocate the shaft 54 towards and away from the work at the same time that it is rotated, thus imparting the helical movement to the cutter knife by means of connections including a link 16 and a lever 18 also actuated by the link 66 and cam lever 68.
To raise the presser foot from the work at the end of a seam, a lever (see Fig. 5) on the shaft 48 is connected by a pin 82 to the forward end of a link 84, the rearward end being connected to a cam lever 86 at the rear of the machine actuated by a slot in the cam 12. After the thread cutter has operated and the cutter shaft 54 has been raised to its highest position away from the work, the lever 86 operates through the connections just described to move the lever 89 to engage a set screw 88 on the presser-foot lock lifting lever 45 so as to unlock and raise the presser-foot from engagement with the Work after the threads have been severed.
The shaft 14 on which the cam 12 is mounted supports a one-revolution clutch having a driving part 99, best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and relatively -movable driven parts 92, 94. The driven parts 92 and 94 of the clutch are held from rotation with the driving part by a pawl 96, and a hook shaped arm 98 loosely mounted on a supporting shaft I00 at one side of the sewing shaft near the upper part of the machine. The paw1 98 is yieldingly held in the path of an abutment I02 on the clutch part 92 and, during the latter part of the reverse rotation of the main sewing shaft 4 at the end of the seam, the pawl is released from the abutment to throw the clutch into action as described more particularly in inventors Patent No. 2,078,942, and in the co-pending application above referred to.
In the machine of inventors Patent No. 2,078,- 942 the pawl 96 is released from the abutment -to' release the pawl 96. To prevent the pawl from being held in released position for more than one rotation of the auxiliary clutch, the
I02 of the onerevolution:c1utch by engagement with a latch mounted on a three-armed lever'on the shaft I60 corresponding to a lever I04 of the present machine. As inthe machine of said patent, the lever I04 of the present machine is secured to the shaft I by a set screw HIS-and carries a roll I08 engaging a cam disk Den the main sewing shaft. - of the lever I04 is connected to the treadle rod I4 by connections including a link 2 (see :Fig. 5), and an arm H4 secured to the shaft 25. When the treadle rod is released, the roll I08 is moved against the cam disk H0 by a spring 6 surrounding the central part of the shaft I00, best shown in Figures 2 and 6. The cam disk II 0 is provided with a slot H8 into which the roll I 08 enters when the sewing shaft reaches a stopping position, the latch on the stop lever I04 of the machine in Patent Na l-078,942 being held from engagement with the clutch actuating pawl 96 when the roll I08 rides along the outer surface of cam disk IIO.
Under certain conditionsfwith the parts constructed and arranged as in the machine of said patent, the roll I08 may enter the slot [I8 of the cam disk during forward rotation of the sewing shaft before it is reversely rotated, and in this way the auxiliary clutch of the prior machine maybe operated at an improper time. Thus,
if the stop lever I04 of the machine described in said patent happens to be released by the movement of the stopping treadle just at the moment when the slot in the cam disk H0 is opposite the roll I08 of the stop lever I04, a sufficient movement of the roll I08 into the slot II8 of the cam disk may be permitted to trip the auxiliary clutch into operation during the continued forward rotation of the shaft.
To prevent improper operation of the auxiliary clutch in the embodiment of the present invention, the latch for releasing the clutch pawl 96 is mounted on a separate clutch control member operated only during reverse rotation of the sewing shaft. The control member consists of a dog I having two triangular shaped arms, which dog in the prior machine is connected to actuate a brake band I22 during final reverse rotation of the sewing shaft. The control dog I20 is loosely mounted on the hub of the lever I04 to rock about the shaft I00 as a center, and is provided with a third arm supporting a bolt I23 on which is fulcrumed the clutch actuating latch in the form of a lever I24. The dog I20 is held yieldingly in definite relation to the lever I04 by a spring I26 coiled around the hubs of the lever and dog and by a set screw I28 on the dog engaging an arm of the lever I04, the arrangement being such that the dog may be rocked latchlever I24 is held yieldingly by a spring I34 surrounding the hub of the latch lever so as to cause the lever to engage a shoulder I36 on the clutch pawl ,96 and before a single rotation of the cam I2 is completed a pin I38 on the cam actuated lever 86 engages an arm of the latch lever I24 to shift it beyond the shoulder I36, thus permitting the pawl to again engage the abutment I02 on the clutch, as shown in Fig. 6.
The nature and scope of the invention having been indicated, and a construction embodying the several features of "the invention having been specifically described, what is claimed is:
1. A machine having, in combination, a main shaft, devices actuated by the shaft,driving and stopping means for said shaft, having forward and reverse driving mechanisms, atreadle rod for shifting from the forward to the reverse driving mechanism, mechanism for performing an auxiliary operation upon stopping the machine, and a control member arranged to be moved into or out of an active position by the treadle rod and to be actuated positively when moved 'toactive'posit'ion by reverse rotation of the shaft for causing said mechanism to perform said auxiliary operation.
2. A machine having, in combination, a main shaft, devices actuated by the shaft, driving and stopping means for said shaft, having forward and reverse driving mechanisms,a treadle rod for shifting from the forward to thereverse driving mechanism, power driven mechanism including a clutch for performing a final operation upon stopping the machine, and a control member actuated in part by the treadle rod and in part by the shaft at the end of its reverse rotation for causing said clutch to berendered operative.
3. A machine having, in combination, a main shaft, devices actuated by the shaft, driving and stopping means for said shaft, having forward and reverse'driving mechanisms, a treadle rod for shifting from the forward to the reverse driving mechanism, power driven mechanism inby the lever I04 into the path of an abutment or roll I30 carried by the cam disk H0. The roll I30 is mounted in a slot I32 in the cam disk III], and when the dog I 20 is moved towards the path of the roll I30 during forward rotation of the sewing shaft, it engages the surface of the cam disk without causing the clutch pawl to be released.
To release the clutch pawl 96 during reverse rotation of the sewing shaft, the dog I20 is first rocked to a set position by movement of the lever I04 as the roll I68 enters slot II8 of the cam disk. One of the arms of the dog then enters the slot I32 in the cam disk where it is engaged by the abutment roll I30. Continued reverse rotation of the sewing shaft rocks the dog a sufficient amount to cause the latch lever I24 eluding a clutch for performing a final operation upon stopping the machine, an abutment carried by the shaft and a clutch control member arranged to be moved into the path of the abutment when the treadle rod is actuated at the end of a seam, said control member continuing its movement in the same direction when engaged by the abutment during reverse rotation of the shaft to actuate the clutch.
4. A machine having, in combination, a main shaft, devices actuated by the shaft, driving and stopping means for said shaft, having forward and reverse driving mechanisms, a treadle rod for shifting from the forward to the reverse driving mechanism, power driven mechanism including a clutch for performing a final operation upon stopping the machine, a control member acting when actuated to render said clutch operative, an abutment carried by the shaft acting during the reverse rotation of the shaft to actuate the control member, and means controlled from the treadle rod for moving the control member into the path of said abutment.
5. A machine having, in combination, a main shaft, devices actuated by the shaft, driving and stopping means for said shaft having forward and reverse driving mechanisms, a: treadle r d driving mechanisms, power driven mechanism including a clutch for performing a final operation upon stopping the machine, a control member, a supporting shaft at one side of the main shaft on which the control member is mounted, an abutment carried by the main shaft acting during the reverse rotation of the shaft to rock the control member about the supporting shaft as a center to render said clutch operative, means controlled from the treadle rod for moving the control member into the path of the abutment, and means on the main shaft for holding the control member out of the path of said abutment until the main shaft has reached a predetermined point in its reverse rotation.
6. A machine having, in combination, a main shaft, devices actuated by the shaft, driving and stopping means for said shaft having forward and reverse driving mechanisms, a treadle rod for shifting from the forward to the reverse driving mechanisms, power driven mechanism including a clutch for performing a final operation upon stopping the machine, a control member, a supporting shaft at one side of the main shaft on which the control member is mounted, an abutment carried by the main shaft acting during the reverse rotation of the shaft to rock the control member about the supporting shaft as a center to render said clutch operative, and means controlled from the treadle rod for movfor shifting from the forward to the reverse ing the control member into the path of the abutment,
7. A machine having, in combination, a main shaft, devices actuated by the shaft, driving and stopping means for said shaft having forward and reverse driving mechanisms, a treadle rod for shifting from the forward to the reverse driving mechanisms, and power driven mechanism including a clutch for performing a final operation upon stopping the machine, a control member, a supporting shaft at one side of the shaft on which the control member is mounted, an abutment carried by theshaft acting during the reverse rotation of the shaft to rock the control member about the supporting shaft as a center to render said clutch operative, an arm connected with the treadle rod for rocking the control member about said supporting shaft to carry the control member out of the path of said abutment during sewing and to permit the control member to move into the path of the abutment during reverse rotation of the main shaft, a cam on the main shaft for holding the control member outof the path of said abutment until the main shaft has reached a predetermined point in itsreverse rotation, and yielding means connecting the control member and said arm arranged to permit movement of the control member by said abutment while the arm remains stationary.
