A. V. CONKLIN DOUBLE CAPACITY BAG Filed June 14, 1939 C/M/Q INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 20, 1940 UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE DOUBLE CAPACITY BAG Alice V. Conklin, Bronx, N. Y. Application .nine 14, 1939, serial No. 279,020
2 Claims.
This invention relates to double capacity bags.
An object of this invention is to provide a bag of the character described, which may be used for different capacities, the bag being provided with handles which may be used whether the bag is iilled to single capacity or double capacity.
A further object of this invention is to provide a bag of the character described, having .a removable bottom, and in which a portion of the when the bag is used for single capacity.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a neat, compact and durable bag of the character described, which shall be'easy to manipulate, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and yet practical and efcient to .a high degree 1n use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which willvbe exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims. 'v
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bag embodying the invention, v shown in position for yuse for double capacity, with the draw strings drawn;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bag shown in Fig. 1, with the top portion of the bag opened 11D;
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the bag shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an elevational, cross-sectional View of the bag embodying the invention, and showing the top of the bag tucked downwardly so that the bag is used for single capacity; and
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4. f
Referring now in detail to the drawing, I 0 designates a bag embodying the invention. The bag comprises a member II made of fabric or the like material, having front and rear walls I2, and end walls I3. Stitched to the lower ends of the front, rear and end walls is an inwardly extending horizontal border member I5, stitched all around, as at I 6a, to form an opening II at the bottom. The inner edges of border member I5 may be folded over and stitched back, as at I6.
Stitched at the outer ends thereof, to said border member I 5, as by stitching I6a, are a plurality of transverse parallel straps I8. Mounted bag may be tucked into the remainder of the bag within the bag, and supported by .theborder member I5, and disposed under the straps I8, is a fiat removable bottom wall 20 made of any suitable stiff material.
Stitched to the upper ends of the front, rear and end walls of member II, as at 25, is a member 26 having front and rear walls 21, and end walls 28. Member 26 extends upwardly from member II. The upper end of member 2,6 is turned downwardly and stitched, as at 30, to form a lsleeve 3| extending all around the upper end of said member. The sleeve 3| may be formed with a pair of opposite openings 32, and disposed within the sleeves are draw strings 33 which may be drawn and tied, as shown in Fig. 1, to close the top of the bag.
yStitched to the upper ends of the front and rear walls I2 of member II, as at 40, are the lower ends of a pair of similar, looped straps 4I. The upper ends of the straps 4I project above the upper end of member 26, so that the handles may be grasped even when the bag is used for double capacity, as shown in Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 4, member. 26 may be tucked downwardly so as to use the bag for single capacity, in which event, the bag is open at the top.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, `and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the Aaccompanying drawing is to be interpreted 4as illustrative and not in a limiting sense,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A bag comprising a member having front, rear and end walls, a border member stitched to the lower ends of said walls, and being open at the bottom, a pair of transverse straps vacross the bottom open end of said member, a bottom member for the bottom of the bag disposed-within the bag and supported on said border member and disposed lbeneath said straps, a member stitched to the upper edge of said rst member `and extending upwardly therefrom, and having front, rear and end walls, and provided with a sleeve at its upper end, draw strings within said sleeve, and a pair of handles stitched to the upper ends of the front and rear walls of the rst member.
2. A bag comprising a member having front, rear and end walls, said front, rear and end walls having inwardly extending portions at the lower ends thereof, a pair of transverse 'parallel straps interconnecting opposite portions of said extensions, -a member stitched to the upper end of said first member and having front, rear and end walls, the upper end of said second member being folded downwardly and stitched to the body of said second member to form a sleeve, draw strings within said sleeve and. extending through an opening in said sleeve, a pair of handles stitched to the upper ends of the front and rear walls of the rst member, said handles extending above the upper endof said second member, and a bottom member within said first member supported on said extensions.
