Patented Aug. 25, 1942 COIHBINATION WRIST ARTICLE AND DIECHANICAL CALENDAR Ignaz Jahr and Paul Greutcr, Bienne, Switzerland Application April 13, 1940, Serial No. 329,586 In Switzerland April 13, 1939' 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to a mechanically operated calendar in combination with an article to be worn around the wrist and has for its object to provide a construction that will be simple and inexpensive and whereby the setting of the date will be easy and convenient.
In the accompanying drawing which forms part of this specification and in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts, one embodiment of this invention is illustrated:
Fig. 1 being a top plan View of a wrist watch equipped with the mechanical calendar.
Fig. 2 is a section on line A--B of Fig, 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on line CD of Fig. 2.
One part I of the article, such as the casing of a wrist watch is provided with hollow extensions 2 which on their upper faces are provided with display windows 3, 4. Rotatively borne in said hollow extensions are cylindrical bodies 5, 6 whose journals project outwardly from the walls thereof. Oscillatorily mounted on the ends of the journals of each cylinder 5 (6) is a link composed of a pair of arms I, I (8, 8) and a cross piece Ia (8a) to which latter may be fastened another part of the article, such as the end 9 (ID) of the wrist strap. These cylinders may bear indicia such as the names of the day of the week and the names of the months, which are arranged in circumferential rows, so that when said cylinders are turned said indicia will be successively displayed through the windows 3. I of said extensions.
These cylinders are provided with ratchet wheels I I, adapted to cooperate with spring pawls I2 fixed in the corresponding extensions 2 of the watch casing. The spacing between successive indicia corresponds to that between the teeth of ratchet wheels which for the cylinder bearing the week days may have seven teeth, while the ratchet wheel for the cylinder bearing the names of the months may have twelve teeth. One of the pair of arms I, I (8, 8) of each link is hollow and slidably mounted therein is a plunger I3 actuated by a spiral spring I 5 and carrying a pin I4 which projects outwardly through a slot lb of said link and passes through an opening I6 into the corresponding hollow extension 2 and there engages the ratchet wheel. When said link is swung upwardly as indicated by dotted lines. said pin I4 will be caused to feed said ratchet wheel one tooth forward. It will be clear that even while the article is tightened around the wrist, the setting of a date can be easily and conveniently efiected.
What we claim is:
1. The combination with a bracelet-like article composed of at least two parts linked together. of a member forming one of said parts and having a hollow body formed with a display window, a cylinder rotativelymounted within said body and bearing circumferentiallya row of indicia, externally operable oscillatory means on said body connected to said other part of the article and means actuated by said oscillatory means and capable of imparting a step by step motion to said cylinder for selectively displaying a certain of its indicia through said display window.
2. The combination with a bracelet-like article composed of at least two parts linked together, of a member forming one of said parts and having a hollow body formed with a display window, a cylinder rotatively mounted Within said body and bearing circumferentially a row of indicia, externally operable oscillatory means on said body and feeding means for said cylinder movably borne within said oscillatory means and capable, when said member is oscillated, of imparting a step by step rotation to said cylinder to selectively display a certain of its indicia through said display window, said oscillatory means being connected to said other part of said article so as to also serve as a link between the hollow body and said other part.
3. The combination with a bracelet-like article composed of at least two parts, of a member forming one of said parts having a hollow body formed with a display window, a cylinder rotatively mounted within said body and bearing circumferentially a row of indicia, externally op erable oscillatory means on said body and feeding means for said cylinder movably borne within said oscillatory means and capable, when said means is oscillated, of imparting a step by step rotation to said cylinder to selectively display a certain of its indicia through said display window, said oscillatory means being connected to said other part of said article so as to also serve as a link between the hollow body and said other part of said article, and said feeding means including a ratchet wheel connected to said cylinder, a spring actuated plunger in said oscil latory means and a feed element cooperating with said ratchet wheel and actuated by said plunger.
