4 claims. (c1. 5 3) This invention relates broadly to combination furniture and more particularly to such furniture of the foldable type.
An object of the present invention is to provide as an article'of furniture, a foldable structure which, with the parts in one position, `may be used to advantage as a table, and With the parts in a Second position may Ibe used to equal advantage as a bed; the object, intent and purpose ofthe invention being to provide generally an article of furniture of the type hereinabove set forth primarily adapted for use on trailers, boats, aeroplanes, in overnight cabins and small apartments."
'Ihe invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure l is a side elevational view of the article of furniture with the parts shown in full line as used for a table, and in broken line when used as a bed.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the assembly shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the aS- sembly with the parts in position for use as a table.
Figure 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view `plemental sections including a relatively large section 'I and a relatively smaller section 8 sections I and 8 being hingedly connected together as at 9.
Also section 8 is hingedly secured to the cleat 6 through the medium of hinges I0, thus permitting the section 8 to fold relative to the upright 5 as shown. I
The sections 'I and 8 are normally urged into right angular position relative to one another through the medium of springs II anchored at one end to the section 8 in proximity to the hinges I0 as at I2, and at a relatively opposite end thereof anchored to the underside of the section 'I as at I3.
The section 8 also has secured as at 8 to the underside thereof, adjacent the hinged end 9 thereof, relatively short cleats or abutments I 4 which, as shown to advantage in Figure 1, abut the section 1` forA cooperation therewith insupporting the section 'I in a horizontal position and at right angles to the section 8 when the parts are in the position shown in Figure 1.
Also to secure the parts in the mentioned position there is secured to the section 8 one end of a hook I5 that coacts with an eye I6 provided onl the underside of the section 1.
'I'he section I also has associated therewith ad- I derside of section 'I, andindividual, folding legs 'I8 hinged to the fixed part Il. of the leg structure through the medium of hinges I9.
As shown when the device is to be used as a table, the platform section 8 is folded flatly against the upright 5 and the leg members I8 are disposed coplanar with the leg section II for cooperation with the upright 5 in holding the platform section 1. in the horizontal position shown in Figure 1 to serve as a top for the table.
When it is desired to use the device'as a bed, hook I5 is disengaged from the eye I6 and section 8 is extended downwardly at right angles to the cleat 6 and in edge-abutting relation with section 'I while the legs I8 are folded upwardly relative to the section I I of the aforementioned leg structure to the end that the parts are then in the dotted line position shown in Figure 1 with the relatively stationary part Il of the leg structure cooperating with the upright 5 in supporting the platform sections 1, 8, in this extended position. Spring II has been omitted from the dotted line position shown inFig. 1 for the sake of clarity. Also with the parts in the position for use as a bed, it will be noted cleats I4 serve as intermediate supports for the structure.
It will be seen that with the construction shown and described involving a platform cornposed of two hinged sections, the device may be used to advantage as a table when required and also as a bed; and provides an article of furniture which readily lends itself to use in camp trailers, l boats, aeroplanes, overnight cabins, and small 1 l apartments wherein space is limited.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that it is in no wise intended to restrict the invention to the precise form herein illustrated and that accordingly I claim al1 such forms of the invention to which I am entitled in View of the prior art and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. As a new article of collapsible furniture, a relatively broad, flat upright, a transverse cleat secured to said upright adjacent the lower portion thereof, a platform section hinged to said cleat, a relatively larger platform section hinged to the first-named platform section, interengaging means 'onl said platform sections for fholding said sections in right angular position relative to one another with the first-named section in iiat parallel contact with said upright and the second-named section extending atlrightangles 3. A new article of collapsible Vfurniture comprising a relatively broad, flat upright, a platform embodying a pair of hingedly connected sections one of which is hingedly secured at one edge thereof to said upright, a collapsible supporting leg structure secured to the other of said platform sections, hook and eye means associated with said platform sections for securing said sections in right angular position relative to one another, and spring means engaged with said sections normally urging said sections to assume said position at right angles to one another, and short cleats secured to one side of one of said sections adjacent the hinge connection between said secfrom the upright for use as a table top, and a leg structure embodying a relatively 'fixed part secured to the underside of ',thesecond-namedf platform and individual legs hinged to said fixed part; said leg structure in an extended position cooperating with said upright tosupport'thesec-- ond-named platform in the aforementioned table top-serving position, and when said legs are folded relativetosaidxed partcooperating with said upright tozsupport jsaid platform sections in coplanar relation for use as a bed.
