1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to 4devices for holding spools of thread and more particularly to devices of this type wherein means are provided for cutting lengths of thread from said spool.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device whereby a plurality of spools of thread can be rotatably held with lengths of thread carried from said spools and positioned under tension whereby the thread can be readily used by the operator without causing kinking or knotting and whereby the loosening of the thread upon the spool is at least largely prevented.
It is another feature of the devic-e according to the present invention that lengths of thread can be cut merely by moving the extended thread against the cutting edge disposed against the tension means thereby cbviating the necessity of using two hands to sever the thread.
'I'he invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of the application.

Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the device according to the present invention.

Fig. 3 is a side view of the device illustrated in Fig. 2 with a portion thereof being in section taken along the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The device according to the present invention comprises a base member lil having a plurality of upright supporting members II, I2, I3, and I4, substantially fixedly positioned therein and adapted to receive spools of thread I 5, I 6, I l, and I8. It is preferred that the base member Ill be bevelled in the upper edges thereof, substantially as shown. The block 2li, of substantially the same length as the base member lil, is positioned thereupon and held in place by the fastening means 2| passing therethru and engaging with the base member. The fastening means 2l also pass thru the resilient spring clip members 22, said clip members having minute cut-out portions indicated at 23 which, cooperating with corresponding minute cut-out portions in the block 23, are adapted to receive and hold under tension threads passed thereunder, substantially as shown at 3U in Figs. 1 and 3. It is preferred that the ends of the members 22 be substantially pointed as shown in order to facilitate introduction of the thread into the cut-out portions. Near the back of the base block l Il a receptacle is provided, generally indicated at 3|, adapted to receive the 1937, serial No. 159,390 (o1. sii-126) rod 32 and having a thumb screw 33 fitted in the threads in said base block whereby the rod can be substantially fixedly secured in position. The rod 32 is provided with two right-angle bends at 34 and 35 and is again bent at 36 to provide a 5 supporting shelf 31 disposed in a plane substantially parallel to that of the base member and adjacent the block 20 whereupon the ends of the thread are held as hereinabove described. The shelf-like member 3l formed in the rod 32 is l0 attached by means of the rivets 38 to the supporting shelf 39. The member 39 comprises a flat shelf-like structure adapted to receive a plurality of razor blades 4I and having stops 40 mounted therein and adapted to engage with por- 15 tions of the razor blades whereby the cutting surface of the blade is positioned outwardly relative to said shelf member, whereby its cutting edge may be utilized to sever threads and the like positioned adjacent thereto. 'Ihe guard member 20 42 is disposed above the razor blades 4I with an edge overlapping the cutting edge, substantially as shown, being held in position b-y the fastening means 43 engaging with the shelf 39. A plurality of recesses 44 are formed in the overlapping edge 25 of the guard member 42, whereby the cutting edge of the razor blades 4I is exposed in the inner portions of the recess.
In use, the spools or bobbins of thread I5, I6,
II, and I8, are mounted on the upright supports 30 II, I2, I3, and I4, and the ends of the threads passed from said spools under the cut-away portions of the resilient spring clips 22, whereby the ends are left free for use and unraveling of the thread from the spool is at least largely pre- 35 vented. When it is desired to sever a length of thread from the thread attached to the spool, the thread to be severed is positioned in one of the recesses 44 in the guard member 42 and being pulled along in said recesses engaging with the 40 cutting edge of said razor blade, whereby the thread is severed.
It is to be understood that this improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to 45 the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modications may be made therein as dol not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A thread cutting device adapted for support in proximity to a thread supply support comprising, an arm adapted to be secured to said support, a blade holder carried by said arm, a blade mount- 55 ed in said holder and having a cutting edge arranged in proximity thereto, a guard member positioned over said blade and having an edge overlapping the cutting edge of said blade, said guard member having a thread receiving opening extending therethrough and an angularly disposed slot extending away from and communicating with said opening whereby to permit tensioned thread to be drawn through said opening and freely pass said blade to be severed therelcr When the thread is guided into said slot.
