Patented Aug. 1, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE REAMER BODY Application september 22, 1937, serial No. 165,148
11 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in Well reamers, and particularly to the bodies for such well reamers.
Heretofore, a highly successful reamer has been developed having a structure similar to that disclosed in Reissue Letters Patent No. 19,339 issued to John A. Vertson. In such constructions a steel reamer body is provided which is incorporated in the drill string, -this reamer body carrying rotatable cutters which are rotatable about laterally inclined axes when viewed in front elevation. The construction of these reamer bodies is somewhat expensive and sometimes diiculty is encountered in incorporating these reamer bodies at the desired position in the drill string.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved reamer body which may or may not incorporate the reamer design as disclosed in the Vertson patent, and which can be clamped at any desired location around the drill pipe. In this Way the cost of the reamer body may be materially reduced and the reamer may be positioned Wherever desired.
Y It is another object Vof the invention to provide an improved reamer construction wherein the body of the reamer is formed of two opposed parts adapted to be positioned in encircling relation around the drill pipe, two adjacent sides of the parts being hingedly connected by a cutter pin so that the cutter pin serves two functions, .namely to hinge the parts together and to provide an axis about which its replaceable cutter may rotate.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel, simple, and durable means for so mounting the reamer body on a drill pipe as to prevent rotation of the reamer body relative to the drill pipe during reaming.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and specically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawing for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of the improved reamer embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation of the improved reamer embodying the invention;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken substantially upon the line 3-3 upon Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a partial view in vertical section taken substantially upon the line 4-4 upon Fig. 3, illustrating the means of holding the reamer body against rotation relative to the drill pipe;
Fig. 5 is a view in vertical section illustrating (Cl. Z55-73) an alternative means for holding the reamer body against rotation upon a drill pipe; and l Fig, 6 isa partial view in vertical section illustrating another means for holding the reamer body against rotation relative to the drill pipe.
Referring to the accompanying drawing Wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the improved reamer co-mprises two opposed semi-cylindrical parts I0 and II adapted to be positioned in an encircling arrangement around a drill pipe P. The back of part I0 is equipped with knuckles I2 and I3 and similarly the back of part I I is provided with knuckles I4 and I 5.' A cutter pin I6 extends through these knuckles and serves to hingedly,
connect parts I0 and II together at theirgbacks. l'
Between the knuckles the walls of the two parts I0 and II are recessed as indicated at I'I and I8. These recesses cooperate to form an opening through the body at the back thereof for affording clearance for the rotatable cutter I9 which is rotatable on cutter pin I6 between washers 20. Part I0 of the body is also provided with top and bottom bosses 2| and 22 through which extends a cutter pin 23 on which is rotatable a cutter 24. This part is formed with an opening 25 therethrough to accommodate the cutter. Similarly, part I I is equipped with top and bottom. bosses 26 and 21, a cutter pin 28, and a cutter 29. The opening in the body for this cutter is indicated at 30. The forward sides of the two parts Ill and II are provided with ears indicated at 32 through which draw bolts V33 extend which are tightened by nuts 34 so as to draw the two parts I0 and II together into clamping engagement around the drill pipe. Additional ears may be provided as indicated at 32a adapted to receive a locking pin 32h for locking parts I0 and I I against opening while in the well in the event that'draw bolts should break or become unfastened. Y
p I have illustrated the cutter arrangement on the body as having the design embodied in the Vertson patent above-mentioned, wherein the cutter pins are arranged on laterally inclined axis. The cutters I9, 24, and 29 are transversely toothed and are of general barrel-shaped configuration. When the cutter pins and cutters are so arranged the rear cutter pin II being laterally inclined forms an inclined hingeat the back of the body and similarly the forward edges on which the ears 32 are located are laterally in- Y clined. It will be understood, however, that the present invention is in no way restricted to the use of laterally inclined cutter pins or cutters but lili may be used in conjunction with other cutter arrangements.
Means is provided for preventing rotation of the reamer body relative to the pipe P during reaming. To this end, the reamer body may be equipped as illustrated in Fig. 4. The interior of the top and bottom of the reamer body formed by the two parts l and Il is annularly recessed as indicated at 35, each annular recess receiving one-half of a segmental rubber ring 35. The ring formed by the halves of the rubber ring is made slightly thicker than the depth of the recess so that it will project inwardly and engage the pipe P. Preferably, the interior and exterior surfaces of each ring are knurled or otherwise formed so as to present strong friction surfaces.v By means of this construction, when the parts of the body are clamped about the pipe P the rubber ring at the top and bottom of the body will be compressed into firm engagement with the pipe P and with the backs of the recesses forming a strong grip which will resist rotation of the reamer body relative to the pipe.
In Fig. 5 I have illustrated an alternative form of construction for preventing rotation of the body relative to the pipe. As illustrated therein, the top and bottom of the reamer body are recessed as indicated at 38 and 39. These recesses receive the edges of a split metal ring. The interior surfaces ci these segmental metal rings indicated at 4G and 4I are knurled so as to tightly grip the drill pipe and the exterior surfaces of these rings are threaded with 0pposed threads. Inasmuch as the conventional direction of drilling is toward the right, the direction of the thrust imposed upon the body during reaming is in the opposite direction. Consequently, the upper ring dll has exterior right-hand threads formed thereon and the lower ring 4I has exterior left-hand threads formed thereon. The backs of the recesses 38 and 39 are threaded complementarily thereto. I prefer to have the rings tapered as shown. With this arrangement rotation of the body of the reamer relative to the rings and tc the drill pipe merely serves to screw the rings toward the center of the body causing them to tightly grip on the drill pipe and when a sufficient grip has been established further rotation of the body relative to the rings is prevented by the opposed threads. Suitable cap screws 42 may be used for holding the split rings in position Yuntil the body 'nas been mounted upon the drill pipe. These cap screws are then removed.
Still another manner of preventing rotation of the reamer body relative to the drill pipe is illustrated in Fig. 6. In this construction the top and bottom of the reamer body is recessed with a tapered recess as indicated at i3 toreceive the halves of segmental rings 44. These halves of each segmental ring are preferably wedge-shaped in cross-section as shown. The recess 43 is formed eccentrically with respect to the drill pipe P and the segmental'ring `at the top and at the bottom is similarly formed so as to t the eccentric recess. The interior surfaces of the rings 44 are knurled so as to grip upon the drill pipe.
y place such as by set screws 45.
faces tting complementary eccentric surfaces at the back of the recess 43, the body tting around the drill pipe and also these eccentric surfaces cannot rotate relative to the drill pipe.
From the above described construction it will be appreciated that a cheaper reamer construction is provided wherein the amount of material in the body is materially reduced. At the same time the advantages of any preferred reamer design may be retained. The reamer body may be gripped at any desired position on the drill pipe and can be rmly held against rotation relative thereto.
Various changes may be made in the details of the construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.`
