Description
Feb. 14, 1939.v J. w. MCCRACKEN PACKAGE WRAPPER Original Filed Feb. 7, 1933 Inventor Lfd/2265 W/Wffacem Patented Feb. 14, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE February 7, 1933.
This application June 4,
1938, Serial No. 211,901
l Claim.
This invention relates to an improved wrapper for a package such as is at present used for cigarettes and the like. The present application is substituted for my abandoned application Serial Number 655,543, filed Feb. 7, 1933.
Briefly, the improvement is embodied in a wrapper including a quick detachable top or cap portion designed to expedite removal of said cap in order to expose an inner wrapping or package containing the cigarettes or other articles contained therein.
More explicitly stated, I have evolved and produced a simple economical sectional or two part wrapper in which the major part is constructed in the form of a receptacle and the remaining part in the form of a quick detachable cap, the meeting edge portions of the capi and receptacle being united through the instrumentality of an interlocking connection suiiicient in character to render the complete wrapper substantially moisture-proof, which at the same time allowing the cap to be quickly and easily pulled off to permit convenient access to be had to the cigarettes or other articles contained in the package.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a perspective view of an enclosure or wrapper constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on the plane of line 2-2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view i1- lustrating the interconnected companion flanges constituting the quick separable interlocking joint.
In practice, the wrapper may be constructed from any appropriate texture of material such as Cellophane, wax paper, tinfoil, label paper, or the like.
Referring now to the drawing by distinguishing reference characters, it will be observed that the main or body section of the wrapper is distinguished by the numeral 4 and is here shown as of general rectangular form and made to provide a casing or receptacle for the package containing the cigarettes, (not shown).
The upper edge of this receptacle as shown in Figure 3, has an inwardly and downwardly folded jointing flange 5. The cap 6, which is of relatively shallow dimensions is formed with inturned suitable closing flaps or tabs 'l and 8. The tab 8 may be distinguished as a pull tab. The depending wall portion of the cap is formed at its lower end with an out-turned upwardly extending jointing flange 9 located to engage the flange 6 in inter-connected relationship as shown in Figure 2 to form an endless interlocking joint or connection I0 as shown in Figure 2. These flanges are not permanently connected together by an adhesive or equivalent agent. They are simply pressed together with sufficient tightness to provide the requisite moisture-proof joint and to al- 1n low the subsequent removal of the entire cap: 6 as a unit. By placing the finger under the tab 8 and lifting it and pulling upwardly in an obvious manner the adjacent flange 9 is disengaged from the cooperating flange 5 after which the entire cap -15 may be easily peeled or pulled off in an obvious manner.
The principal novelty is predicated upon a receptacle-like body portion of a vertical dimension to permit the flange 5 to terminate at a point be- 2O low the top of the package, in conjunction with an inverted tray-like cap whose rim or wall portion is provided with a co-acting flange 9 so that when the two flanges are brought together they provide an interlocking joint possessing the de- 25 sired requisites, the cap having the tabs l and 8 which may be easily grasped to permit the cap to be removed with facility in order to expose the cigarette package.
A careful consideration of the foregoing de- 30 scription in conjunction with the illustrative drawing will enable the reader to obtain a clear understanding of the purpose, features and advantages, the explicit construction, and the invention as hereinafter claimed.
It is to be understood that minor changes in shape, size, relative proportions, and materials may be resorted to in practice without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the invention as now claimed.
What is claimed is:
As an article of manufacture, a wrapper for a cigarette package or the like comprising a receptacle open at its top and provided at its extreme upper end with an inwardly and downwardly folded retention flange, a closing cap provided at opposite ends and on its top with inbent pull tabs, the wall or rim portion of said cap fitting telescopically down into the upper flanged edge portion of the receptacle and being formed with an outwardly and upwardly directed flange having detachable interlocking connection with said first-,named flange.
JAMES W. MCCRACKEN.
