DISPENSING DEVICE Filed April 24, 1934 /A/ VEA/T'OE aw/4 90 G 5540/74 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPENSING DEVICE Edward G. Beach, Mount Vernon, N. Y.
Application April 24, 1934, Serial No. 722,077
2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in dispensing devices and is particularly herein illustrated in a device for dispensing coffee for domestic purposes, although it is to be understood that the device may be used in other connections as well.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device for dispensing commodities in measured quantities and is particularly adapted for dispensing cofiee.
It is a further object of the invention to provide new and novel means whereby a single operation will discharge the desired quantity of material.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a new and novel construction which may be easily kept in a sanitary condition and which may be easily filled from time to time as occasion may require.
With the above and other objects in view reference will be had to the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention,
26 Figure 2 is a view partly in elevation and partly in vertical section on an enlarged scale of the device shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 3--3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2, and;
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring more specifically to the drawing, the
device comprises a receptacle |0, having a removable cover I I, and an open end l2, which latter is contracted as at I3, and provided with a thread I4.
Means is provided for supporting a receptacle H], in operating position. This means is herein illustrated as a housing I5, having a discharge opening Hi. This housing has a lug projection adapted to be received by a bracket I8, by which the receptacle and the housing may be supported from a Wall or the like.
The housing I5, has an internal thread IQ, for engagement with the thread I4, of the receptacle l0, and at the base of said thread, said housing is provided with an annular shoulder 20. The
contracted portion |2, of the receptacle H1, is adapted to be received in the end of the housing with its thread M, in engagement with the thread l9 thereof, as best illustrated in Figure 2.
Means is provided for determining the discharge of material from the receptacle lll and this means consists of two measuring receptacles 25, and 26. These measuring receptacles 25, and 26, are carried by two spaced plates 21, and 28. The plate 21, is provided with an upstanding flange 29, and an annular flange 30, which is 5 adapted to be received upon the shoulder 20, as best illustrated in Figures 2 and 5. Means is provided to alternately close and open the upper ends of the receptacles 25, and 25, and this means consists of a plate 3|, having one opening 32, 1 therein. Means is provided to alternately open and close the lower ends of the receptacles 25, and 26, and this means is herein illustrated as a plate 33. This plate 33, has two openings 35, and 36, therein, and these openings are adapted to be 15 alternately registered with the lower ends of measuring receptacles 25, and 26.
By this construction it will be apparent that with the parts in the position in which they are shown in Figure 5, material in the container Ill, 20 will pass into the receptacle 26, through the opening 32, of the plate 3|, the upper end of the receptacle 25, being closed by the plate 3|. When, however, the plates 3|, and 33, are moved so that the opening 32, in the plate 3|, registers with 25 the upper open end of the receptacle 25, the opening 36, of the plate 33, will register with the lower open end of the receptacle 26, and discharge the material with which it was previously filled. With the parts in this position, the material in 30 the receptacle 25, is discharged therefrom and the receptacle 26, will be filled with material. Movement of the two plates in the opposite direction will effect a filling of the receptacle 25, and a discharge of the receptacle 26. 35
Means is provided to operate the plates 3|, and 33, in unison, and this means consists of a spindle 40, connected to the plates and upon which is loosely mounted an arm 4|. Having threaded engagement as at 42, with the arm 4|, 40 there is an operating lever 43, the inner end of which engages the spindle as at 44,when the arm is screwed inwardly of the member 4|, thus l0ck ing the member 4|, to the spindle 40. The operating lever 43, operates in a slot 48, in the housing, and this slot is so constructed that its end walls limit the movement of the operating lever 43, to stop the same in the proper position to effect registration of-the openings in the plates with the open ends of the receptacles 25, and 26, to effect the operations above described.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and novel device for measuring predetermined quantities of 55 material and that it is particularly useful in measuring cofiee for household purposes.
While the invention has been herein illustrated and described in its preferred form, it is to be understood that it is not to be limited to the construction herein shown and that it maybe practiced in other forms without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,'is:
1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a receptacle and means for controlling the discharge of material therefrom, said means comprising a housing, a pair of measuring receptacles, each having its ends open, a pair of spaced plates rigidly mounted in the housing in spaced relation to each other said spaced plates forming a compartment between the ends of said receptacles, said measuring receptacles being rigidly connected at their ends to said spaced plates, thereby to support the measuring receptacles rigidly in the housing, a closure plate mounted above the upper rigid plate, said closure plate having an opening therein for alternate registration with the open upper ends of the measuring receptacles, a second closure plate mounted below the lower rigid plate and having an opening therein for alternate registration with the open lower ends of the measuring receptacles, a spindle connecting said closure plates for op eration in unison, and an operating lever operating through said compartment and connected to said spindle and extending through the side wall of the housing to a, point exteriorly thereof whereby the spindle may be operated to operate the closure plates.
2. In a device of the character described, in 5 combination, a receptacle and means for con trolling the discharge of material therefrom, said means comprising a housing, a pair of measuring receptacles, each having its ends open, a pair of spaced plates rigidly mounted in the housing in spaced relation to each other, said measuring receptacles being rigidly connected at their ends to said spaced plates, thereby to support the measuring receptacles rigidly in the housing, a
closure plate mounted above the upper rigid plate,
said closure plate having an opening therein for alternate registration with the open upper ends of the measuring receptacles, a second closure plate mounted below the lower rigid plate and having an opening therein for alternate registration with the open lower ends of the measuring receptacles, a spindle connecting said closure plates for operation in unison, an arm loosely mounted on said spindle and having an internally threaded recess, and an operating lever threaded into said recess into engagement with the spindle to operatively connect the arm and spindle and having its opposite end extending through a slot in the side Wall of the housing to the exterior thereof whereby the spindle may be operated to;
operate the closure plates.
