FIGS. 1-15 to show an embodiment of the combative helmet of the present invention. The basic helmet construction is shown at 10 and a visor is shown at 12. Typically, part of the helmet construction includes apadded rim 13 illustrated inFIG. 1 .FIG. 1 also illustrates the slide assembly at 20. Although not illustrated in the drawings, there is a like mirrorimage slide assembly 20 on the opposite side of the visor so that the same pivoting action can occur on both sides of the visor. - The fragmentary perspective view of
FIG. 3 illustrates theslide assembly 20 in what may be considered a locked position. Reference can also now be made toFIG. 12 which shows the basic components of theslide assembly 20. Thisslide assembly 20 includes amain base plate 22 that is secured to the helmet. This is illustrated inFIG. 3 secured to awall 14 of thehelmet 10. Thebase plate 22 has end internally threadedholes 23, asawtooth interlock surface 26, ahole 25 for accommodatingscrew 50 and a tang 27 (see alsoFIGS. 4 and 5 ). The slide assembly also includes theslide plate 30 which includes anelongated slot 31 for receiving thescrew 50 and asawtooth surface 32. Theslide plate 30 is also provided with internally threadedholes 34. InFIG. 12 a third main component is thepivot plate 40. Thescrew 50 is secured to thepivot plate 40 by means of apin 54. Thescrew 50 has a threaded end at 55 and ahead 51 with ahole 52 extending therethrough. Thepin 54 is for accommodation in a set ofholes 46 inrespective arms 44 of thepivot plate 40. Thepin 54 is positioned through theholes 46 and provides a pivot point for thepin 50. -
FIGS. 4 and 5 illustratemain base plate 22 secured to thehelmet wall 14. This securing of thebase plate 22 firmly holds the base plate against thewall 14 by means ofscrews 24.FIGS. 4 and 5 also illustrate thescrews 36 used for attachment of theslide plate 30 with thevisor 12. As also illustrated inFIGS. 4, 5 and 12 , there is another throughhole 25 that accommodates thescrew 50 that is free-floating within thehole 25. Thehole 25 may be un-threaded. Thebase plate 22 also includes anend tang 27. InFIG. 4 thisend tang 27 is shown engaged by thelatch 42 at theend hook 43.FIG. 4 shows the engaged position, whileFIG. 5 illustrates thelatch 42 having been disengaged from thetang 27. This enables a pivoting of thepivot plate 40. This pivoting is illustrated in an initial position inFIG. 5 , and is generally about the axis of thepin 50. - Reference is now made to
FIGS. 6-10 which show the following operation that enables the visor to be moved forwardly and pivoted upwardly. In this regard,FIGS. 6 and 7 illustrate a relationship betweenbase plate 22 and theslide plate 30 that is interlocked. In that regard, therespective sawtooth surfaces FIG. 7 .FIG. 7 also illustrates byarrow 70 the pivoting of thepivot plate 40 to a position substantially orthogonal to thebase plate 22. In the position ofFIG. 7 , thescrew 50 is engaged within thehole 25 of thebase plate 22. - Reference may now be made to the cross-sectional view of
FIG. 8 which illustrates a de-coupling between thesawtooth surfaces slide plate 30. This occurs by virtue of the wearer of the helmet moving the slide plate away from the base plate, such as in the direction ofarrows 72 as illustrated inFIG. 8 . This sliding motion occurs while thepin 50 is still maintained in thehole 25 of thebase plate 22.FIG. 9 now illustrates the next step which is the sliding of theslide plate 30 in the direction ofarrow 74. This is enabled by virtue of theelongated slot 31 in theslide plate 30 that enables the slide plate to move to the position ofFIG. 9 while still engaged with thepin 50. Finally, in the fragmentary enlarged perspective view ofFIG. 10 , thearrow 76 illustrates a pivoting of the visor to an upward position. In the position ofFIG. 10 , theend 47 of thepivot plate 40 atarms 44 is preferably flat so that thepivot plate 40 is essentially maintained in that position while still allowing a pivoting action in the direction ofarrow 76.FIG. 11 also illustrates this pivoting action, illustrating theslide plate 30 and thepivot plate 40. - Reference is also now made to respective side elevation views shown in
FIGS. 13-15 . The purpose of these views is to illustrate the manner in which thevisor 12 can easily be moved forwardly and then pivoted upwardly so as to clear thecushion 13 on thehelmet 10. In this regard,FIG. 13 illustrates avisor wall 15. It is noted that in the closed locked position of the visor, thiswall 15 is under thecushion 13 and thus would not be able to be moved upwardly. The next side elevation view ofFIG. 14 illustrates theslide member 30 being moved in the direction ofarrow 80. In that position it can be seen that thevisor wall 15 is clear of thearcuate cushion member 13. Finally, in the side elevation view ofFIG. 15 , thearrow 82 illustrates a pivoting or tilting of thevisor 12 to an open position. The pivoting ofFIG. 15 is essentially about the axis of thescrew 50. - It is also understood that the actions described herein can readily be reversed so that the visor can be moved from the open position as illustrated in
FIG. 15 to a downward position as illustrated inFIG. 14 and from there the slide member is slid in the direction opposite to thearrow 80 inFIG. 14 . The sawtooth surfaces 26 and 32 can then be engaged as illustrated in the cross-sectional view ofFIG. 7 and thepivot plate 40 is then pivoted to a locked position as illustrated in the cross-sectional view ofFIG. 4 . - As indicated previously, there is a
slide assembly 20 on each side of the helmet and the actions that are described herein are meant to apply equally to both the slide assemblies so that the action taken is in concert, whether opening or closing the visor. - Having now described a limited number of embodiments of the present invention, it should now be apparent to those skilled in the art that numerous other embodiments and modifications thereof are contemplated as falling within the scope of the present invention, as defined by the appended claims.
