Definitions

  • This disclosure relates generally to exercise equipment, and, in particular, to multipurpose exercise machines used for aerobic, strength, stretching, balancing, strength, stretching, rehabilitation, weight loss, toning, muscle balancing, and physical, emotional, and psychological therapy exercises.
  • Exercising regularly generally leads to tremendous benefits. Exercising generally enhances and maintains physical fitness, health, and wellness. Exercise has been performed for various reasons, including, strengthening muscles and the cardiovascular system, weight loss, honing athletic skills, and enjoyment. Exercising also helps boost a person's immune system, prevents obesity and cardiovascular diseases, and has been shown to elevate moods and promote a positive effect on mental health.
  • Another difficulty is that some people lack the funds to continuously pay for the monthly gym memberships fees. Those fees, combined with the notorious cancellation fees associated with many gyms, can serve as a deterrent for many in signing up for a gym membership. Additionally, even if people do sign up for a gym membership, there is no guarantee that they will find the gym equipment that they seek. Individuals may dislike the fact that gym equipment is often used by other gym members during peak hours, such as before and after work.
  • exercise can oftentimes lead to an unsafe or dangerous activity due to a risk of injury.
  • Exercise can sometimes result in acute injuries, especially during strenuous group exercise classes where beginners may try to keep up with more advanced participants. Acute and chronic injuries can also occur when exercising with incorrect form.
  • a person's external form is correct, many times, his or her internal form (e.g., distribution of weight, force, movement, resistance) is out of balance.
  • group activities may also result in injury when a participant's non-targeted muscle groups perform strenuous exercise or when the non-targeted muscles are unable to perform the task at hand.
  • a user may also move body parts incorrectly while attempting certain exercises. This, typically results from the principle underlying Newton's Third Law—i.e., “No every action there is always opposed an equal reaction”. Specifically, when there is unnecessary human body part movement during an exercise, there is a greater ineffectiveness of the exercise. This is especially true when it is compared to a human body performing the exercise with only essential movements (or with minimal wasted movements).
  • any force and work attempting to reach the targeted muscle groups is generally: (1) minimized or reduced in intensity; (2) changed, redirected, or split to non-targeted areas; and (3) decreased exponentially respective to undesired movement and “action reaction” making the exercise ineffective.
  • U.S. Pat. No. 3,640,527, issued to Proctor, and U.S. Pat. No. 2,855,199, issued to Kuckhoff disclose gym equipment that are limited to only a certain amount of exercises.
  • Proctor discloses a weight resistant chest exercising device that allows a user to exercise his or her pectoral muscles.
  • a user preferably lies on a padded table and swings abutment shafts upwardly and toward each other to work out the user's arms and chest.
  • Kuckhoff discloses an exercise apparatus that allows a user to exercise his or her legs and hamstrings. A user sits on an exercise table, and positions his or her leg beneath a leg shaft in order to lift the leg shaft with weights.
  • Proctor and Kuckhoff disclose gym equipment that targets and isolates specific muscle groups, the exercise equipment disclosed in both references do not provide a variety of exercises for other parts of the user's body.
  • the multifunctional exercise (1) can be used at home, the office, or wherever is convenient; (2) is portable, space efficient, affordable; and (3) provides a user with effective targeted results.

Description

    FIELD OF USE
  • This disclosure relates generally to exercise equipment, and, in particular, to multipurpose exercise machines used for aerobic, strength, stretching, balancing, strength, stretching, rehabilitation, weight loss, toning, muscle balancing, and physical, emotional, and psychological therapy exercises.
  • BACKGROUND
  • Exercising regularly generally leads to tremendous benefits. Exercising generally enhances and maintains physical fitness, health, and wellness. Exercise has been performed for various reasons, including, strengthening muscles and the cardiovascular system, weight loss, honing athletic skills, and enjoyment. Exercising also helps boost a person's immune system, prevents obesity and cardiovascular diseases, and has been shown to elevate moods and promote a positive effect on mental health.
  • Unfortunately, exercising regularly can be an extremely difficult task. Waking up several hours before work to go to the gym is not always desirable, nor is driving to the gym after spending all day in the office. Of course, there are also countless obligations awaiting individuals when they come home after a long day at work, including fulfilling family needs and maintaining their household. Additionally, fitness classes at a gym or studio are generally set at a particular time, thereby causing individuals to rearrange their busy schedules in order to attend these fitness classes. If an individual misses his or her class, then that individual will likely be unable to find additional time to go to the gym before or after work. Thus, many individuals may have no choice but to either come up with a quick, makeshift, routine at home that will never fully satisfy their fitness goals, or just not work out at all.
  • Moreover, exercise can oftentimes lead to an unsafe or dangerous activity due to a risk of injury. Exercise can sometimes result in acute injuries, especially during strenuous group exercise classes where beginners may try to keep up with more advanced participants. Acute and chronic injuries can also occur when exercising with incorrect form. For example, when a person's external form is correct, many times, his or her internal form (e.g., distribution of weight, force, movement, resistance) is out of balance. In cases of weightlifting and isometric exercises, group activities may also result in injury when a participant's non-targeted muscle groups perform strenuous exercise or when the non-targeted muscles are unable to perform the task at hand.
  • Furthermore, conventional gym equipment may be ineffective for what an individual hopes to accomplish when working out his or her body. Some gym equipment may fail to target or isolate a specific muscle group while other gym equipment is limited to only a certain amount of exercises. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 2,640,696, issued to Lemieux, discloses a free weight dumbbell with adjustable weights, in which a user may perform arm exercises for each arm. Additionally, U.S. Pat. No. 2,447,218, issued to Trzesniewski, discloses a free weight barbell with adjustable weights, which may be used to perform arm workouts for both arms of the users. These exercise devices, however, are not generally configured to target or isolate a specific muscle group, as a user may work out a different muscle when performing free weight exercises.
Upon performing an unnecessary body movement during the execution of an exercise, any force and work attempting to reach the targeted muscle groups is generally: (1) minimized or reduced in intensity; (2) changed, redirected, or split to non-targeted areas; and (3) decreased exponentially respective to undesired movement and “action reaction” making the exercise ineffective. Depending on the redirection of the force by the user's incorrect body movement during the execution of the exercise, many common exercises may also be performed in an unsafe manner. This may result in: (1) injury, (2) inability to be active, and (3) being ineffective and inefficient to the exerciser.
  • Moreover, U.S. Pat. No. 3,640,527, issued to Proctor, and U.S. Pat. No. 2,855,199, issued to Kuckhoff, disclose gym equipment that are limited to only a certain amount of exercises. Specifically, Proctor discloses a weight resistant chest exercising device that allows a user to exercise his or her pectoral muscles. A user preferably lies on a padded table and swings abutment shafts upwardly and toward each other to work out the user's arms and chest. Kuckhoff discloses an exercise apparatus that allows a user to exercise his or her legs and hamstrings. A user sits on an exercise table, and positions his or her leg beneath a leg shaft in order to lift the leg shaft with weights. Although Proctor and Kuckhoff disclose gym equipment that targets and isolates specific muscle groups, the exercise equipment disclosed in both references do not provide a variety of exercises for other parts of the user's body.
  • Therefore, there remains a long felt need in the art for a multi-functional exercise equipment, which may be used to target and isolate certain muscle groups safely while stabilizing others. Preferably, the multifunctional exercise: (1) can be used at home, the office, or wherever is convenient; (2) is portable, space efficient, affordable; and (3) provides a user with effective targeted results. Preferably, the multifunctional exercise equipment will also have interchangeable parts and will have multiple configurations in order to provide a variety of exercises.
  • SUMMARY
  • To minimize the limitations in the cited references, and to minimize other limitations that will become apparent upon reading and understanding the present specification, the following discloses a multi-functional exercise equipment, which provides a user with numerous exercises that target a specific muscle group.

However, one or more embodiments of the disclosure may be practiced without some or all of these specific details. In other instances, well-known methods, procedures, and/or components have not been described in detail so as not to unnecessarily obscure aspects of embodiments of the disclosure.
  • While multiple embodiments are disclosed, still other embodiments of the present disclosure will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description, which shows and describes illustrative embodiments of the disclosure. As will be realized, the disclosure is capable of modifications in various obvious aspects, all without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure. Accordingly, the graphs, figures, and the detailed descriptions thereof, are to be regarded as illustrative in nature and not restrictive. Also, the reference or non-reference to a particular embodiment of the disclosure shall not be interpreted to limit the scope of the disclosure.
  • Before the present disclosure is disclosed and described, it is to be understood that this disclosure is not limited to the particular structures, process steps, or materials disclosed herein, but is extended to equivalents thereof as would be recognized by those ordinarily skilled in the relevant arts. It should also be understood that terminology employed herein is used for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only and is not intended to be limiting.
  • In the following description, certain terminology is used to describe certain features of one or more embodiments of the disclosure. For example, a surface that is “substantially” flat would mean that the object is either completely flat or nearly completely flat. The exact allowable degree of deviation from absolute completeness may in some cases depend on the specific context. However, generally speaking, the nearness of completion will be so as to have the same overall result as if absolute and total completion were obtained. The use of “substantially” is equally applicable when used in a negative connotation to refer to the complete or near complete lack of an action, characteristic, property, state, structure, item, or result.
  • As used herein, the term “appendage” generally refers to any external body part that protrudes from a person's body and may include, without limitation, a foot, hand, arm, leg, head, neck, fingers, and toes.
  • As used herein, a plurality of items, structural elements, compositional elements, and/or materials may be presented in a common list for convenience. However, these lists should be construed as though each member of the list is individually identified as a separate and unique member. Thus, no individual member of such list should be construed as a de facto equivalent of any other member of the same list solely based on their presentation in a common group without indications to the contrary.
  • As used herein, the term “wall tracks” generally refers to one or more bars, rods or wall tracks that provide running surfaces for vertical movement of the slide plate and/or base plate along the wall. Similarly, the term “floor tracks” generally refers to one or more bars, rods, or floor tracks that provide running surfaces for horizontal movement of the slide plate and/or base plate along the ground or floor.
  • FIG. 1 is an illustration of one embodiment of the multi-functional exercise equipment and shows the slide plate engaged on the wall tracks. As shown in FIG. 1, one embodiment of the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 may comprise: wall tracks 105; a slide plate 110; floor tracks 205, and a base plate 210. FIG. 1 shows that the wall tracks 105 are generally configured to be mounted on a substantially flat surface 140 such as a wall or door and that each track or rail is generally mounted in parallel with respect to each other. Additionally, the tracks may be mounted in a substantially parallel configuration, such that the tracks are either completely parallel or nearly completely parallel. The wall tracks 105 may be mounted by one or more mounts 150 but may be mounted by any various mechanisms such as hooks and fasteners. In one embodiment, the slide plate 110 may be configured to engage with the wall tracks 105 and may be configured to slide along the length of the wall tracks 105 in a linear fashion. The multi-functional exercise equipment 100 may also be configured to allow a user to lock the slide plate 110 at various locations along the wall tracks 105.
  • FIG. 1 also shows that the slide plate 110 may comprise: first attachment points 115, 120, 125 and a rotational rail 135. Each of the first attachment points 115, 120, 125 may be configured to allow a user to remove or attach one or more pieces of stabilization equipment to each of the first attachment points 115, 120, 125. In one embodiment, the first attachment points 115, 120 may be located on the front portion of the slide plate 110, whereas the other first attachment point 125 may be located on the rotational rail 135. Specifically, the slide plate 110 may comprise a rotational track, which may be configured to include a rotational rail 135 that is adapted to move in a substantially circular or rotational motion around the rotational track. The rotational motion of the slide plate 110 may move either completely circular or partially circular, and, when moving the rotational rail 135 around the rotational track, the movement of the rotational rail 135 may be subjected to an adjustable rotating resistance. The adjustable rotating resistance may be the resistance applied when a user moves the rotational rail 135 around the track and may be adjusted with varying degrees of resistance by the user. First attachment point 125 may be located at the rotational rail 135 and may be configured to move in a rotational motion along with the rotational rail 135 within the rotational track. Thus, a user utilizing stabilization equipment may perform an exercise by attaching the stabilization equipment to the first attachment point 125 and moving the stabilization equipment in a rotational motion. For example, a user may wear a hand stabilizer 300 (shown in FIGS. 2-4 and 13) and perform various arm exercises by attaching a connection point of the hand stabilizer 300 to first attachment point 125. Similarly, a user may wear a foot stabilizer 400 and perform various leg exercises by attaching a connection point of the foot stabilizer 400 to first attachment point 125. Furthermore, the adjustable rotating resistance may allow the user to select varying resistances when performing a workout with the rotational rail 135. Regarding first attachment points 115, 120, these attachment points may be configured to allow a user to attach stabilization equipment and move the slide plate 110 and stabilization equipment in a substantial linear and/or vertical motion. In other embodiments, the rotational track and rotational rail 135 may be ellipsoidal or a figure eight shape or any other shape that allows for a substantially rotational movement. Additionally, the wall tracks 105 may be horizontally or diagonally configured without deviating from the scope of the disclosure.
  • In one embodiment, when sliding the slide plate 110 along the wall tracks 105, the sliding may be subjected to an adjustable resistance. Specifically, the user may adjust the friction between the wall tracks 105 and the first sliding plate 110, such that more or less resistance may be applied when moving the first sliding plate 110 in a vertical or linear manner. Additionally, the slide plate 110 may be configured to lock in one or more positions along the wall tracks 105. This adjustable feature may allow a user to perform exercises with various workout intensities, thereby allowing a user to perform the exercises in a different and variable manner.
  • Regarding the floor tracks 205 and base plate 210, the base plate 210 or “floor slider” may also comprise second attachment points 215, 220, 225, 230 and an appendage securing mechanism 250. The floor tracks 205 may be mounted on a second flat surface such as a floor and are generally in parallel with one another. In a preferred embodiment, the floor tracks is usually, substantially perpendicular to the wall tracks, such that the angle of the floor tracks is positioned within approximately 45 to 135 degrees with respect to the wall tracks. The base plate 210 is generally configured to engage with the floor tracks 205 and may be configured to slide horizontally along the length of the floor tracks 205 in a horizontal and linear fashion. The multi-functional exercise equipment 100 may also be configured to lock the base plate 210 at various positions along the floor tracks 205 to allow the user to perform various workout exercises. Furthermore, appendage securing mechanism 250 of the base plate 210 may be used for securing the appendage of a user such as a foot when performing exercises and may be any type of fasteners such as foot straps. In one embodiment, the base plate 210 may be configured to slide along and lock into place along the floor tracks 205. In another embodiment, the appendage securing mechanism 250 may be positioned on a rotatable surface on the base plate 210, such that a user may face a particular direction and may be change his or her orientation relative to the base plate 210. These orientations generally allow a user to exercise different parts of the user's body while maintaining proper and consistent form. To increase safety, the rotating surface may lock into a particular orientation, thereby preventing the user's feet from moving or slipping while the user exercises. This is generally important because proper form typically results effective exercises and a reduction of dangerous strains on the body.
  • The multi-functional exercise equipment 100 also allows a user to perform additional exercises. For example, when the slide plate 110 is locked in a lowered position, a user may position himself or herself facing away from the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 and connect one end of a resistance band 500 (shown in FIGS. 2 and 14) to one of the attachment points 115, 120 and the other end of a resistance band 500 to the user's hand or hand stabilizer 300, which may be fastened and secured to the hand of the user. The user may then perform exercises such as bicep curls, overhead tricep extensions, and overhead presses by moving his or her arms using a traditional form for the bicep curls, overhead tricep extensions, and overhead presses. Similarly, when the slide plate 110 is at a positioned at a height approximately at the user's shoulder height, a user may position himself or herself by facing away from the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 and connect one end of the resistance band 500 to one of the attachment points 115, 120 and the other end to the user's hand, or to a device attached to the user's hand. The user may then perform exercises such as chest presses and flys by moving the user's arms using a traditional form for the chest presses and flys.
  • The multi-functional exercise equipment 100 may also comprise additional accessories and attachments, which may be used in combination with the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 in aiding the user to perform other various exercises. Such accessories and attachments may include, without limitation, hand stabilizers 300, 350 (shown in FIG. 13), arm restraints 800, 850 (shown in FIG. 13); resistance bands 500 (shown in FIG. 14); poles 355 (shown in FIG. 15); foot stabilizers 900, 950 (shown in FIG. 16); and thigh restraints 1000, 1050 (shown in FIG. 16). Each combination of the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 and accessories/attachments may be customized with the slide plate 110 and rotational rail 135 locked at various points in the slide plate 110 (e.g., points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8). The slide plate 110 may also be moved and locked along a vertical path on the wall tracks to accommodate the body type and height of the user. Regarding the base plate 210, the attachments and accessories may attach onto the second attachment points 215, 220, 225, 230 of the base plate 210, and the center portion of base plate 210 along with the appendage securing mechanism 250 may rotate and lock at various points around a rotational path. The base plate 210 may also move along the floor tracks 205 along a horizontal or linear path and may lock at certain points on the floor tracks.
  • Examples of some of the configurations for the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 and corresponding exercises, involving the slide plate 110 engaged with the wall tracks may include the following:
    • 1) resistance band 500—tricep pull down
    • 2) resistance band 500, hand stabilizers 300, 350, arm restraints 800, 850—single arm fly

    • 11) rotating base plate 210 with approximately 15 degrees of side-to-side resistance with resistance band 500—double arm, double leg oblique twist
    • 12) rotating base plate with approximately 15 degrees side-to-side resistance, resistance band 500, poles 355—double leg twist with single arm crossover over press (other arm on pole)
    • 13) rotating base plate 210 with approximately 15 degrees side-to-side resistance, poles 355—standing oblique twist with supported oblique dip/tuck up (face away, rotate lower body hold twist for dip, feet stay in base on ground) Note: slide plate 110 and rotational rail 135 may be engaged on.
  • It is important to note, however, that each of these exercise combinations can be used to execute more than ten different exercises.
  • FIG. 2 is an illustration of one embodiment of the multi-functional exercise equipment and shows a user performing a single arm fly exercise on the multi-functional exercise equipment. As shown in FIG. 2, another embodiment of the multi-functional exercise equipment 300 may comprise: wall tracks 105, a slide plate 110, floor tracks 205, a base plate 210; resistance band 500, and hand stabilizer 300. The slide plate 110 may comprise first attachment points 115, 120, 125. The base plate 210 may comprise second attachment points 215, 220, 225, 230 and an appendage securing mechanism 250. FIG. 2 shows that a user may perform a single arm fly exercise by attaching hand stabilizer 300 to attachment point 120 via resistance band 500. Specifically, the user may perform a fly exercise by moving his or her arm and hand stabilization equipment 300 repeatedly in an arc motion while overcoming the resistance of the resistance band 500. When the resistance band 500 is coupled to attachment point 125, the user may be capable to perform guided arm and leg circles exercises. Additionally, the attachment point 125 may be configured to have an adjustable resistance in order to allow a user to exert varying amounts of force. Preferably, when performing the single arm fly exercise, the user preferably targets his or her pectoral muscles, biceps, deltoids, and lateral muscles during the exercise.
  • FIG. 3 is an illustration of one embodiment of the multi-functional exercise equipment and shows a user performing a lateral single arm (palm forward) circle exercise on the multi-functional exercise equipment. As shown in FIG. 3, one embodiment of the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 may comprise: wall tracks 105; a slide plate 110; floor tracks 205, a base plate 210 and hand stabilizer 300. As discussed above, the wall tracks 105 may be mounted on a flat surface such as a wall or door. Additionally, the slide plate 110 may be slidably connected to the wall tracks 105, such that the slide plate 110 may move along the tracks in a vertical fashion. The slide plate 110 may also be configured to lock in certain vertical places along the wall tracks 105.
  • FIG. 3 also shows how a user may perform an exercise when the slide plate 110 is locked at a certain position. For example, a piece of stabilization equipment may be attached to the first attachment point 125 of the slide plate 110 and may be moved by the user in a rotating fashion. Such stabilization equipment may comprise elastic resistance bands, cables, and devices, which may be used in conjunction with the multi-functional exercise equipment. For instance, as shown in FIG. 3, a user may perform a lateral single arm circle exercise by utilizing stabilization equipment. Specifically, the user wears a hand stabilizer 300 and removeably attaching the hand stabilizer 300 to the first attachment point 125 of the rotational rail 135. After the hand stabilizer 300 has been attached to the attachment point 125 of the rotational rail 135, the user may perform arm exercises by moving his or her arm, the hand stabilizer 300, and the rotational rail 135, in a circular fashion. The user may move his or her arm in a clockwise or counter-clockwise manner, and may adjust the height of the slide plate 110 along the wall tracks 105 to work out certain muscle groups in the user's arm. The user may also increase the resistance around the rotational rail 135. Although FIG. 3 shows the user attaching the stabilization equipment to the first attachment point 125 of the rotational rail 135, the hand stabilizer 300 may attach to other attachment points of the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 such as first attachment points 115, 120 or second attachment points 215, 220, 225, 230. Furthermore, although FIG. 2 shows the user attaching the hand stabilizer 300 directly to first attachment point 125, the user may also utilize resistance bands 500 that attach between the first attachment points 115, 120, 125 of the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 and the hand stabilizer 300.
  • When an elastic band, resistance band 500, or other device is coupled to one end to the first attachment points 115, 120, 125 and the other end to the user's appendage such as a hand or foot (either directly or through a device such as the resistance bands), the user is able to perform guided arm and leg circles. Additionally, attachment point 125 may be configured to move in a substantially rotational motion and may be configured to have an adjustable resistance in order to allow a user to exert varying amounts of force. Regarding the slide plate 110, the first attachment plate 110 may likewise be configured to have an adjustable vertical resistance when slidably moving along the wall tracks 105. This adjustable feature of the slide plate 110 allows a user to perform different exercises with various resistances in different angles. In alternate embodiments, the stabilization equipment may be attached to any part of the users body, depending upon what exercise is desired. Preferably, when performing the single arm lateral circle exercises, the user preferably targets his or her biceps, triceps, deltoids, rear deltoids, and lateral muscles during the exercise.
  • The multi-functional exercise equipment 100 may also comprise additional accessories and attachments, which may be used in combination with the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 in aiding the user to perform other various exercises. Each combination of the multi-functional exercise equipment 100 and accessories/attachments may be customized with the slide plate 110 and rotational rail 135 locked at various points in the slide plate 110 (e.g., points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8).
