Claims.
This invention relates to a labeling machine and particularly to that part of it which involves the wiping down of the ends of a label.
The invention is particularly adapted for the labeling of rectangular cartons, bottles or other receptacles, although not strictly limited thereto, but it applies to those cases in which both ends of the label are to be wiped down on the same side of the article by motions in opposite directions and in which the ends, when wiped down on the article, are a considerable distance apart.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide simple and practical means whereby, when an article is located in stationary position and the label is located around three sides of it and projects from the fourth side at opposite ends, these two ends can be wiped down by a motion of two wipers toward each other and the motion of the wipers will be controlled to take place simultaneously; to provide a stationary cam having two cam surfaces for controlling the action of the two wipers; to provide means whereby when one wiper moves in one direction the other will be forced to move in the other direction simultaneously and to same extent, and to provide compact and simple mechanism for accomplishing these results.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view of a labeling machine of the straight line reciprocating type showing a preferred embodiment of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a plan of the rack and pinion means for operating the two wipers;
Fig. 4 is a plan of the mechanism for operating the wipers, showing them in inactive position, and
Fig, 5 is a similar view showin the wipers at the time when their operation has been performed and completed.
As stated, this invention has to do with cases in which two projecting ends of a label L extend from one side of carton, box, or the B, which is held in stationary position, as show in Figs. 4 and 5.
In this case, the center of the label is held against the back of the article B, by a holder 25 while two members 23 and 24, which have moved previously in a direction parallel to the motion of the holder 25, engage the label and force it to cover the ends of the article B, leaving the parts in the position shown in Fig. 4.
It will be understood that the conveyor C, on which the article is held, is stationary during the wiping down process to be described later. After 5 this process is completed the conveyor moves to the right in Fig. 4, so that the labeled article will occupy the position indicated at B and the article is in position ready to be fed into the labeling position, as indicated at B The machine comprises a frame I0 having an upright portion ii that supports certain parts, as will appear. Below the frame is a main driving shaft [2 operated from some convenient source of power. On this shaft I2 is a cam l3, which, by means of a roll M and lever l5, reciprocates a vertical rod hi. This rod is adjustably connected with the arm I"! on the shaft N3, the shaft 28 being mounted in bearings which are bolted to the upright portion II with bolts 20. The forked label pickers 2| are pivoted on a shaft, not shown, which is operated in any'desired way, as for example, in the manner shown in the patent to James O. Fenner and Henry A.

- Fixed on the shaft l8 to oscillate with the lever Il' are the pair of members 23 and 24 which are fixed together so that, as the shaft I8 swings, the 0 members 23 and 24 will move into the position shown in Fig. 4 to engage the label and turn it part way around the box B on both ends. Also there is a holder 25 pivoted on a shaft 26 and operated as in the above mentioned patent for holding the center of the label on the bottle after it is once put in position.
On the shaft 12 is a bevel gear 33 meshing with a bevel gear 3! on a shaft 32, the shaft 32 by a pair of bevel gears 33 driving a vertical shaft 3 5. Fixed to the top of this shaft 34, which extends up through the table of the machine frame I6, is a cam 35. This cam operates a pivoted lever 33 through a roller 31 against the action of a spring 38. 'Through a link 39, which is made 5 up mostly of a right and left hand screw so that the length of the link can be adjusted, the member 33 operates an arm 4!! fixed on a vertical shaft 4|.
The arm 40 is connected by an adjustable link 42, with a slide 43 which is mounted in longitudinal guides 44. At the other end of the guides is another slide 45. These slides are respectively connected with a pair of racks 46 and 41 facing each other and having a gear or pinion 48 between them, meshing with both racks, as shown in Fig. 3. The power to move these slides is transmitted to the link 42 but on account of the rack and pinion arrangement, it is transmitted equally to both slides and when one of them moves inwardly toward the other, the other moves equally in the opposite direction. The pinion 48 is mounted on a horizontal axis.
Each slide is provided with an upwardly extending arm 50 having a vertical pivot stud 5| on which is mounted a wiping arm 52. This wiping arm in each case has a roller 53 and stud 54 carrying a spring metal wiper 55 in this case.
Mounted at a convenient point on the frame ll of the machine is a stationary cam 56 having two cam surfaces 51, one for each of the rollers 53. By comparison of Figs. 4 and 5, it will be obvious that when the link 42 pulls the slide 43 inwardly from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Fig. 5 the cam surfaces 51, with the help of a pair of springs 58, will actuate the wipers to force inwardly the ends of the label and simultaneously wipe them down to their final position, as indicated in Fig. 5.
In this way, it will be seen that very simple mechanism is provided for wiping down the opposite ends of a label at a distance apart on the surface of a paper carton, glass bottle, or other article in which the label does not extend entirely around it. It is particularly suitable for articles having a fiat surface on which these two ends of the label are adapted to be pasted down. It cooperates with the straight line type of labeling machine in which the articles to be labeled are moved along a straight line by the reciprocation of a carrier C or support for the articles.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:-
1. In a labeling machine, the combination with a support for the article to be labeled and means for holding a label with two opposite ends projecting from the same side but at opposite ends of said article, of an oscillating lever, means for oscillating said lever, a toothed slide movable with the lever, a second parallel toothed slide oppositely located, racks on the adjacent sides of the slides, a pinion between and meshing with said teeth on both slides, and wipers carried by the two slides, whereby the wipers will move toward or from each other when the lever is turned, for wiping down the opposite ends of the same label.
2. In a. labeling machine, the combination of a pair of parallel slides, means for directly moving one slide, racks on the slides, a pinion meshing with both racks, whereby the two slides will always move together but oppositely, a pivoted wiper carried by each slide, a stationary cam having two cam surfaces, and means carried by each wiper for engaging the respective cam surfaces for simultaneously swinging both wipers into operative position when the first named means is moved in one direction.
3. In a labeling machine, the combination of a swinging lever, means for turning said lever, an adjustable link pivoted to the lever, a slide to which the link is pivoted, a second slide, means for causing the second slide to move oppositely to the motion of the first slide at all times, a wiper pivoted to each slide comprising a surface for engaging a label in the article to be labeled, a stationary cam having two depressed cam surfaces, a roll on each wiper adapted to engage its respective cam surface as the slides move, and springs for moving the wipers toward said article controlled by the cams.
4. In a labeling machine, the combination of a swinging lever, means for turning said lever, an adjustable link pivoted to the lever, a slide to which the link is pivoted, a wiper pivoted to the slide comprising a surface for engaging a label on the article to be labeled, a stationary cam having a depressed cam surface, a roll on said wiper adapted to engage the cam surface as the slide moves, and yielding means for moving the wiper toward said article controlled by the cam.
