Abstract
The present invention provides a mounting bolt system for mounting a toilet. The mounting bolt system includes a washer and a nut which are mounted on the threaded bolt adjacent to the bolt head, and they are all placed below the toilet. The bolt system also includes a circular flange having a rectangular slot formed therein for receiving bolt through slot, and a wing nut for tightening the toilet to the toilet flange, and a barrel-shaped bolt cap for covering the upper end of bolt. The bolt cap is threaded to the circular flange on the upper surface of the toilet base to cover the wing nut and to complete the mounting of the toilet, so that only the barrel-shaped bolt cap is visible after the installation of the toilet.
Description
- The present invention involves a mounting bolt system for installing and mounting a toilet, in a simple and easy manner.
- Toilets typically have universally accepted components for mounting on a floor surface. The toilet has a horizontal base to rest on and engage the floor surface. A recess opening appears on the underside thereof with a perimeter. A floor ring already mounted in the floor is fitted within the recess. The floor ring is in communication with the downwardly extending sewer pipe.
- A pair of oppositely disposed slots are typically formed in the flange and comprise a wide bolt head receiving portion terminating in an elongated narrow bolt head retaining portion slots. These openings extend vertically through the flange. The narrow portion of the slot frequently has lower edges terminating in a groove extending along the edges. The groove has a width greater than the narrow portion of the slot.
- Conventionally, a bolt which has upper and lower ends with the lower end having a planar head is mounted within the narrow portion of the slot with the planar head on the lower end thereof positioned in the aforementioned groove. The planar head on the bolt has a width wider than the narrow portion of the slot, and a longitudinal length greater than the width of the narrow portion.
- It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved article and method for securing a toilet to flanged rings.
- The present invention provides a
mounting bolt system 100 for mounting atoilet 12. Thesystem 100 includes an elongated threadedbolt 120 withupper end 122,lower end 124, a threadedelongated shank 126, and aplanar bolt head 128 on thelower end 124 of thebolt 120.Mounting bolt system 100 also includes awasher 130 and anut 140, which are mounted on the threadedbolt 120 adjacent to thebolt head 128, and they are all placed below thetoilet 12. Thebolt system 100 also includes acircular flange 150 having arectangular slot 152 formed therein for receivingbolt 120 throughslot 152, and awing nut 160 for tightening thetoilet 12 to thetoilet flange 14, and a barrel-shaped bolt cap 170 for covering the upper end ofbolt 120. Thebolt cap 170 is threaded to thecircular flange 150 on the upper surface of the toilet base to cover thewing nut 160 and to complete the mounting of thetoilet 12, so that only the barrel-shaped bolt cap 170 is visible after the installation of thetoilet 12. -
FIG. 1 is an elevational view showing a toilet being installed, with the toilet shown in dotted lines; -
FIG. 2 is a detailed view showing the opening 34 for receiving a toilet mounting bolt; -
FIG. 3 is a detailed view showing themounting bolt system 100 being installed on a toilet, with the toilet shown in dotted lines; -
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of themounting bolt system 100, with its component parts; -
FIG. 5 is an exploded view thereof; and -
FIG. 6 is an assembled view thereof. - Referring generally to
FIG. 1 , aconventional floor surface 10 is shown supporting aconventional toilet 12 having abase 14, aperimeter portion 16, and a centrally located recess 18 in the bottom central portion thereof. - A
conventional floor ring 20 has acenter opening 22 which terminates in a downwardly extendingsewer pipe 24. Aconventional wax ring 26 is mounted on top offloor ring 20 and serves to sealtoilet 12 tofloor ring 20 when the installation is completed.Floor ring 20 is nested withinrecess 18 ofbase 14 oftoilet 12. A pair of elongated slots are typically formed infloor ring 20 for receiving the upstanding mounting bolts for mounting the toilet. - To install a
typical toilet 12,floor ring 20 is set in place in floor surface with mounting bolts extending upwardly from each of the slots inring 20. Typically, the heads of the bolts are inserted into the slots inring 20.Wax ring 26 is then located in its conventional position, andtoilet 12 is then lowered ontofloor ring 20 so that the mounting bolts extend through bores in the base of thetoilet 12. - As shown in
FIGS. 4 , 5, and 6, the present invention provides amounting bolt system 100 for mounting atoilet 12. Thebolt system 100 also includes acircular flange 150 having arectangular slot 152 formed therein for receivingbolt 120 throughslot 152, and awing nut 160 for tightening thetoilet 12 to thetoilet flange 14, and a barrel-shaped bolt cap 170 for covering the upper end ofbolt 120, and thewing nut 160. Thebolt cap 170 is threaded to thecircular flange 150 on the upper surface of the toilet base to cover thewing nut 160 and to complete the mounting of thetoilet 12, so that only the barrel-shaped bolt cap 170 is visible after the installation of thetoilet 12.
