Abstract

The present invention provides a mounting bolt system for mounting a toilet. The mounting bolt system includes a washer and a nut which are mounted on the threaded bolt adjacent to the bolt head, and they are all placed below the toilet. The bolt system also includes a circular flange having a rectangular slot formed therein for receiving bolt through slot, and a wing nut for tightening the toilet to the toilet flange, and a barrel-shaped bolt cap for covering the upper end of bolt. The bolt cap is threaded to the circular flange on the upper surface of the toilet base to cover the wing nut and to complete the mounting of the toilet, so that only the barrel-shaped bolt cap is visible after the installation of the toilet.

Description

    FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention involves a mounting bolt system for installing and mounting a toilet, in a simple and easy manner.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • Toilets typically have universally accepted components for mounting on a floor surface. The toilet has a horizontal base to rest on and engage the floor surface. A recess opening appears on the underside thereof with a perimeter. A floor ring already mounted in the floor is fitted within the recess. The floor ring is in communication with the downwardly extending sewer pipe.
  • A pair of oppositely disposed slots are typically formed in the flange and comprise a wide bolt head receiving portion terminating in an elongated narrow bolt head retaining portion slots. These openings extend vertically through the flange. The narrow portion of the slot frequently has lower edges terminating in a groove extending along the edges. The groove has a width greater than the narrow portion of the slot.
  • Conventionally, a bolt which has upper and lower ends with the lower end having a planar head is mounted within the narrow portion of the slot with the planar head on the lower end thereof positioned in the aforementioned groove. The planar head on the bolt has a width wider than the narrow portion of the slot, and a longitudinal length greater than the width of the narrow portion.
  • OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION
  • It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved article and method for securing a toilet to flanged rings.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention provides a mounting bolt system 100 for mounting a toilet 12. The system 100 includes an elongated threaded bolt 120 with upper end 122, lower end 124, a threaded elongated shank 126, and a planar bolt head 128 on the lower end 124 of the bolt 120. Mounting bolt system 100 also includes a washer 130 and a nut 140, which are mounted on the threaded bolt 120 adjacent to the bolt head 128, and they are all placed below the toilet 12. The bolt system 100 also includes a circular flange 150 having a rectangular slot 152 formed therein for receiving bolt 120 through slot 152, and a wing nut 160 for tightening the toilet 12 to the toilet flange 14, and a barrel-shaped bolt cap 170 for covering the upper end of bolt 120. The bolt cap 170 is threaded to the circular flange 150 on the upper surface of the toilet base to cover the wing nut 160 and to complete the mounting of the toilet 12, so that only the barrel-shaped bolt cap 170 is visible after the installation of the toilet 12.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • FIG. 1 is an elevational view showing a toilet being installed, with the toilet shown in dotted lines;
  • FIG. 2 is a detailed view showing the opening 34 for receiving a toilet mounting bolt;
  • FIG. 3 is a detailed view showing the mounting bolt system 100 being installed on a toilet, with the toilet shown in dotted lines;
  • FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the mounting bolt system 100, with its component parts;
  • FIG. 5 is an exploded view thereof; and
  • FIG. 6 is an assembled view thereof.
  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
  • Referring generally to FIG. 1, a conventional floor surface 10 is shown supporting a conventional toilet 12 having a base 14, a perimeter portion 16, and a centrally located recess 18 in the bottom central portion thereof.
  • A conventional floor ring 20 has a center opening 22 which terminates in a downwardly extending sewer pipe 24. A conventional wax ring 26 is mounted on top of floor ring 20 and serves to seal toilet 12 to floor ring 20 when the installation is completed. Floor ring 20 is nested within recess 18 of base 14 of toilet 12. A pair of elongated slots are typically formed in floor ring 20 for receiving the upstanding mounting bolts for mounting the toilet.
  • To install a typical toilet 12, floor ring 20 is set in place in floor surface with mounting bolts extending upwardly from each of the slots in ring 20. Typically, the heads of the bolts are inserted into the slots in ring 20. Wax ring 26 is then located in its conventional position, and toilet 12 is then lowered onto floor ring 20 so that the mounting bolts extend through bores in the base of the toilet 12.
  • As shown in FIGS. 4, 5, and 6, the present invention provides a mounting bolt system 100 for mounting a toilet 12. The bolt system 100 also includes a circular flange 150 having a rectangular slot 152 formed therein for receiving bolt 120 through slot 152, and a wing nut 160 for tightening the toilet 12 to the toilet flange 14, and a barrel-shaped bolt cap 170 for covering the upper end of bolt 120, and the wing nut 160. The bolt cap 170 is threaded to the circular flange 150 on the upper surface of the toilet base to cover the wing nut 160 and to complete the mounting of the toilet 12, so that only the barrel-shaped bolt cap 170 is visible after the installation of the toilet 12.
