Dress and similar patterns usually have holes punched therein to indicate, for instance, where darts are to be made in a garment and before a pattern spread upon a piece of goods is removed therefrom, the position of these holes are indiwaited on the goods by various different means.

To simultaneously cut duplicate pieces from a pattern, the goods is folded upon itself. O-bviously, it is a simple matter to simultaneously cut duplicate pieces from a pattern on the upper piece, but there is no convenient or accurate way of indicating these holes on the under piece of goods.

It is now the general practice when cutting duplicate pieces from a pattern to locate the holes in the pattern on the goods by sticking pins through the upper and lower pieces or by running a thread therethrough by the use of a needle. Both folds of the goods are then marked by a piece of chalk at the points designated. This procedure is not satisfactory for the reason that it is difl'icult to make a chalk mark at the exact point designated and also for the reason that one piece of the goods often slips upon the other, particularly silk goods, so that corresponding designated points do not register. If corresponding designated points on two folds of goods do not register, the parts of the garment will not go together correctly with the result that the garment does not fit.

The object of this invention is the provision of and extremely simple and highly efiicient handle-equipped dressmakers chalk holder. By the use of this holder a piece of chalk held thereby may be inserted fiatwise under a piece of goods folded upon itself on a table or other support and said holder shifted, at will, to position the piece of chalk thereon directly under a given hole in a pattern spread upon the goods. With the holder thus positioned, the upper fold'of the goods is marked, through the respective hole 'in the pattern, by hand with a second piece of chalk. Hand-pressure required on a piece of chalk in marking the upper fold of the goods is suflicient to cause the piece of chalk in the holder to cor-' respondingly mark the under fold of the goods. It will thus be seen that by the use of my chalk holder, two pieces of goods may be simultaneously and correctly marked.

To the above end, generally. stated, the inven- 5 tion consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the invention, like characters indicate-like parts throughout the several views.

The improved chalk holder includes a rectan gular body member 8 formed from a single thin sheet of metal, the longitudinal edge portions of which are folded upwardly and inwardly over said member and spaced thereabove to afford a pair of retaining flanges 9. The front end portion of the body member 8 is also turned upwardly to afford a stop flange Ill. k

Formed with the rear'end of the body member 8'is a handle I I that lies substantially in the 40 plane of said body member. This handle has an extension I 2 that is telescoped onto the handle II and is securely held thereon, except for endwise sliding movement, by retaining flanges l3. These flanges, I3 are formed on the longitudinal edges of the handle extension l2 and interlock with the longitudinal edges of the handle II.

An upstanding pin l4, fixed to the handle H, and a depending fixed lug IS on the front end of the handle extension l2, co-operate to limit the outward sliding movement of the extension l2 on the handle H. Thebody member 8 and retaining flanges 9 are shaped to receive and hold a thin rectangular piece of dressmakers chalk X. This piece of chalk may be mounted on the body member 8 by endwise sliding movement under the retaining flanges 9 at the rear end of the holder. 1

During the application of the piece of chalk X to the holder, the handle extension l2 must be moved outwardly from the rear end of the body member 8. When the handle extension I2 is telescoped to its innermost position on the handle l I, the piece of chalk X can not accidentally slide from under the retaining flanges 9. The flange l limits the forward sliding movement of the chalk X under the retaining flanges 9. The handle II and the handle extension l2 are transversely and outwardly bowed to strengthen the same.

To illustrate the use of the invention there is shown in Figs. 6 and '7 a piece of goods Y folded upon itself and a paper dress pattern Z laid on the upper fold of said goods. Formed in the pattern Z is a plurality of holes Z' that indicate certain steps in the process of making a dress. The chalk holder, with its handle extension I2 adjusted to its outermost position, is inserted under the under fold of the goods Y with the chalk X directly under certain of the holes Z. Obviously, hand pressure used on the piece of chalk in marking the upper fold of the goods Y through the holes Z over the chalk X will press the under fold of said goods onto the piece of chalk X and mark said under fold. It will thus be seen that the two folds of the goods Y are simultaneously marked without causing said folds to slip, the one upon the other, and with the holes in registration, the one with the other. By the use of the long handle H-l2 the chalk holder may be shifted under the goods fromone hole Z to another without disturbing the goods.

Froni what has been said, it will be understood that the holder described is capable of modifications as to details of construction and arrangement within the scope of the invention herein disclosed and claimed.

What I claim is:

1. A dressmakers chalk holder comprising a rectangular body member formed from a single sheet of metal, the longitudinal edge portions of which are folded upwardly and inwardly over the upper face of the body member and spaced therefrom to afford a pair of retaining flanges arranged to receive a rectangular piece of chalk by an endwise sliding movement with the upper surface of the chalk exposed between the flanges.

2. A dressmakers chalk holder having an elongated member with means at one end for holding a rectangular piece of chalk at its longitudinal edge portions; whereby one face of the chalk between the holding means is exposed.

3. A dressmakers chalk holder having an elongated member for supporting a rectangular piece of chalk flatwise thereon, said member having at one end means for holding the piece of chalk at its longitudinal edge portions, whereby one face of the chalk between the holding means is exposed.

4. A dressmakers chalk holder having an elongated member for supporting a rectangular piece of chalk flatwise thereon, said member having at one end opposing retaining flanges arranged to receive the piece of chalk, at its longitudinal edges, by endwise sliding movement and hold the same with one face exposed between the flange.

5. The structure defined in claim 4 which further includes stop means for positioning the piece of chalk, during its endwise sliding movement on the member.

6. A dressmakers chalk holder having an elongated member for supporting a rectangular piece of chalk flatwise thereon, said member having at one end means for holding the piece of chalk at its longitudinal edges and with one face of the piece of chalk between the holding means exposed, whereby the holder may be inserted under the under fold of a. piece of cloth folded upon itself on a support and shifted to position the piece of chalk under a designated point on a pattern spread on the upper fold ofthe cloth and at which point the upper fold of the cloth is to be I marked with a second piece of chalk under suflicient pressure to cause the piece of chalk in the holder to correspondingly mark the under fold of the piece of cloth.
