;,:gether with means to maintain the book in open position yet readily permitting the requiredfturn I .ing of the leaves.
1, 0 a device of this kind which, when applied, serves It' is also an object of the invention to provide ,LtO .support a book in open position and in a manner to eliminate accidental turning of a page and wherein :the construction of the device is such to allow the same to be conveniently used as a book ends I I invention: consists in the details of con- ,structionandin tliecombination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved book holder whereby certain important advantages are y The novel features of rny invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed; I
, In, orderthat my invention-may be the better understood, I willnow proceed to describezthe same with reference to the. accompanying drawings, wherein:-'
.1. Figure 1 is a;view iiniperspective-oi the book ;ho1der,constructed in accordance with an embod- 4 :Figure 2 is aview inend elevation iment of my invention unapplied and in an open or extended. adjustment; I I
of the device .1 as illustrated in Figure 1 applied to a book;
wFigure 3-is an elevational view and ofsomewhat a diagrammatic character illustrating the use of my improved holders as herein disclosed astbooktends; x 1 v 1.
Figure 4 is a View in end elevation. of a holder as herein disclosed applied to a book with the parts in fully folded adjustment;
Figure 5 is a view in end elevation illustrating a pair of holders constructed in accordance with my invention applied to a book;
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view taken through the central portion of my improved holder as herein disclosed unapplied and in folded or compacted adjustment.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved holder comprises a pair of elongated plates I and 2 of a material possessing the required strength and rigidity, said plates being each of a length to extend at least a major diswill be hereinafter more tance across the back covers 3 of an open book. These plates have their central portions hingedly connected, as at 4, so that said plates I and 2 as particularly illustrated in Figures 3, 4, '5 and 6 can, when desired, be folded into overlying relation. l One of the plates, as I, has its outer longitudinal marginal portion defined by an outstanding flange 5 relatively broad at its extremities but being. reduced toward its center. The central,
portion 6 of the flange 5 is cut outto allow said flange to readily bridge the back binding of a book when the covers 3 are in extended or open position;
I The face of the plate I at the same side thereof as the flange 5 has disposed transversely thereacross but positioned closely adjacent thereto the relatively broad leaf springs I, each of said springs "I having an end portion 8 as indicated by broken lines in Figure l .angularly disposed and welded or otherwise securely attached to the flange 5; These springs 'I are spaced apart lengthwise of the plate or member I and are located to have efiective coaction with the open covers '3 of the book, each of said-covers'being slidably engaged between a spring I and the member I. To facilitate the eiiective contact of a spring l with a cover 3, the outer or free end portion of said spring '5 is provided thereacross with a rounded bead. 8 disposed toward the memher I.
, .The inner face of the flange 5 at opposite sides ofthe cut-out portion 6 has adhesively or otherwise securely fixed thereto the pads IE! of porous rubber or kindred material which are adapted to have contact with the edges of the book pages I! and thus effectively hold said pages against accidentalturning movement yet readily permitting the reader to turn a page as desired. As clearly illustrated .in the accompanying drawings,
Itheupper surface of each of the pads III is transyersely inclined downwardly toward the plate I to further facilitate the. maintenance of .thebook leaves against accidental turning.
The second plate 2 has its outer longitudinal marginal portion defined from substantially one end to the other by a flange I2 substantially the same as the flange 5 hereinbefore referred to and also provided with the central portion 6 to bridge the back of a book. This flange I2 when the plates I and 2 are in extended or open position is disposed in a direction opposite to the flange 5 but the flange I2 overlies the flange 5 when the plate 2 is swung into closed or compacted position with respect to the plate I as is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The outer face of the flange I2 at opposite sides of the central cut-out portion 6' has disposed thereover the laminations I4 of rubber or kindred material and which laminations are extended to overlie the outer edges of said flange I2. These laminations I4 are provided to eliminate scratching or marring of the surface upon which the holder may be rested to support a book or when the compacted device isbeing used as a book end as illustrated inFigure-3 of the accompanying drawings.
Each end portion of the member or plate I and:
the adjacent end portion of the flange 5 at the junction thereof is cut away, as at I5, to'snu'gly' receive and hold a pad I6 of rubberxor'ikindred material. This pad or foot I6 projects beyond the corner edge afforded by the member"I and flange 5 for direct contact with the surface upon which the holder may be placed as is particularly illustrated in Figure 2.
With theplates I and 2 in the-adjustment-as illustrated in- Figures 1 and 2 the applied book is held upon a surface on an inclineas determined by the flange I2 although thedesired'angleof the book may be varied by adjusting the plate 2into different angular positionswith'respectto the plate I. The book may'also be supported in substantially a vertical position as illustrated'in Figure 4 with the plates I and 2 in folded or compacted adjustment, or the book may be held upon the lap or other locations'with the device folded or compacted as illustrated in Figure 4-whenit is only particularly desired to use my improved device to hold the bookopen and the pages II thereof against accidental turning movement.
When a single holder is employed it is preferably engaged with the lower portion of the book or more particularly the covers thereof although itcan be employed to advantage if engaged with the upper portion of the'book.
Under certain'conditions it is also of advantage to apply holders to both the upper and lower portions ofa book as illustrated in Figure 5 and when a holder is applied to the upper portion ofa'book the plate or member 2--may be extended as desired to hold the book upon a surface at 'substantiallya predetermined angle tosuit the convenience of the reader.
While it is not essential that two of my-improved holders be employed with a book, yet'in practice I find it of advantage and-probably more satisfactoryto use two holders and by distributing my improved holders as a set of two I also make provision for "book ends to whiclr'use the device may be put with convenience and facility.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious thata book holder constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly-well adapt-ed for use by reason of "the convenience-and facility with which it maybe assembled and operatd, and it will also be obvious that my invenstanding flanges carried by the opposite longitudinal margins of the plates, said flanges lapping-when the plates are in folded or compacted adjustment,and-;pads of yielding material carried by the flanges of one of the plates and disposedever the'inner faces of said flanges for engagement with the leaves of an applied book to hold said leaves against accidental turning, the topsurfaces of the -pads beingdisposed on a. transverse-'- downward incline towardthe l adjacent'plate;
