GARMENT HANGER Filed Oct. 3, 1936 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 3nnentor Patented June 8, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT at This invention relates to garment hangers and more particularly to a hanger of the display type which is adapted to support trousers or the like in a manner whereby individual trousers may be removed from the display rack without removal of the supporting hanger.

An object of this invention is to provide a display rack for trousers which is so constructed that pairs of trousers may be supported from a pair of horizontal supporting bars carried by a standard and a plurality of such horizontal bars may be secured to a suitable standard so that a relatively large quantity of trousers may be supported by this rack in such a manner that the trousers will not be wrinkled and so that any desired pair or number of pairs of trousers may be removed from the rack without disturbing the other garments.

Another object of this invention is to provide an improved clamping means in association with a rack for each individual pair of trousers so that a particular pair of trousers may be quickly removed from the clamping means without removing the supporting means from the display rack.

A further object of this invention is to provide a spring pressed clamp for the trousers which is so constructed that release of the clamp will permit the clamp to automatically swing into a clamping position.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a supporting means for the trcusers clamp and the trousers which is so constructed that it will be yieldingly maintained in operative position on the supporting standard structure in a manner whereby the trousers support may be swung through a limited arc and so that the support will not readily become disengaged from the standard.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates generally a pair of standards which are disposed in spaced apart relation and which are connected together by a plurality of horizontally'disposed connecting bars. The pair of trousers is adapted to be disposed over'zthis horizontal bar 22, as shown in Figure 3, so that the trousers will dependingly be supported from the bar 22. A brace or downwardly extending bar 26 extends downwardly from the outer end of the horizontal bar 22 and is provided with a vertical extension 21 terminating in an outwardly extending hook 28 which is adapted to engage in a hole 20 of a lower bar II.

In order to provide a means whereby the trousers T will not become disengaged or disarranged from the supporting bar 22, I have provided a releasable clamping member, generally designated at 29, which is secured to the supporting member 2i. The clamping member 29 comprises a clamping bar 3i] provided with an angulary disposed inner end. portion 3i which is wrapped spirally about the extension 23, as at 32. This spiral portion 32 comprises a spring, one end 33 of which engages the offset member 2 3 and the other end of which is integral with the clamping bar 30. The clamping bar 30 is adapted to be disposed in substantially parallel relation to the supporting bar 22 and the forward end of this bar 30 is bent inwardly, as at 3 3, sothat the forward end of the clamping member 29 will extend to the greatest advantage.

A locking member 35 is formed integral with the clamping member 29, the locking member 35 being formed by bending the forward end of the bar 39 upwardly in substantially U-shape so that the locking member 35 will normally extend above the trousers supporting bar 22.' One leg of the locking member 35 is provided with an extension 36 terminating in a loop or handle 31 which extends outwardly beyond the end of the supporting bar 22 and provides a convenient lever or handle for manipulation of the clamping" member 29.

As shown in Figures 1 and 3, the supporting rack bars [I are so arranged that the intermediate bars provide a support for the inner end of the bar 22 of one rack 2| and also provide a support for the lower hooked end 28 of an upper supporting member 2|. In this manner, a relatively large number of trousers supporting members may be mounted on a single rack structure without wrinkling or otherwise disfiguring the trousers, while, at the same time, the trousers mounted in this rack can be viewed or displayed Preferably, the supporting members 2| have the opposite ends 25 and 28 so disposed relative to each other that the bars 22 and 26 will be placed under some tension when the supporting member 2| is mounted in a pair of supporting rack bars H.

In the use of this display rack, the bars I I may be made of any desired length and threaded or otherwise secured in the vertical posts or standards l2 in vertically spaced apart relation. The

holes 29 of the bars H are disposed on the upper side of each bar so that the hook members 25 and 28 may readily engage therein. In order to clamp a pair of trousers on the rack member 2|, the trousers are draped over the bar 22 after the manner shown in Figure 3. At this time the clamping member 29 may be raised above the bar 22 by initially moving the bar 39 downwardly a suflicient distance so that the lockingmember will clear the bar 22. The bar 39 may then be moved laterally or as shown in Figures 3 and 4, the bar 39 may be moved to the right and then raised above the bar 22. The bar 22 is slightly longer than the width of the trousers when folded so that the locking member 35 will not contact with the trousers T. Assuming that the trousers T have been draped over the bar 22 and the clamping member 29 is in a disengaged position, the bar 39 may then be lowered so that the end portion 33 of this spring 32 will contact with the extension 24 when the bar 39 is disposed at an angle inclined upwardly to the horizontal so that when the bar 39 is swung downwardly to permit the locking member 35 to engage inside the angle formed by the bar 22 and the bar 26,

engagement of the locking member 35 with the bar 22 is facilitated by the sliding contact of the lever extension 36 with the side of the upper end of the bracing bar 26.

In the event it is desired to remove a pair of trousers from the rack structure without removing the trousers from the supporting member 2 this can be accomplished by forcing the hook members 25 and 28 out of the holes 29. The supporting member 2| is constructed of relatively resilient material so that the bar 26 and the bar 22 may be moved relative to each other sufficiently to accomplish the release of the hook members 25 and 28 without changing the configuration of the bars 22 and 26. In order to release a pair of trousers from a supporting member 22 without removing the member 2| from the rack, it is only necessary to move the clamping member 29 downwardly against the tension of the spring 22 to a point where the holding member 35 becomes disengaged from the supporting bar 22 after which the clamping member 29 may be raised to a released position as hereinbefore described.

It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of thefollowing claims.

What is claimed is:

l. A garment display rack comprising a plurality of vertically spaced apart horizontal supporting bars provided with longitudinally spaced apart holes in the upper surfaces thereof, means for supporting said bars in spaced apart relation, and a plurality of garment supporting brackets engaging said bars, said brackets including a substantially V-shaped supporting member provided with hooked portions at the divergent ends thereof, one side of said supporting member being disposed in substantially horizontal position, means for offsetting the hooked end of said one side of said supporting member from the longitudinal axis thereof, a clamping member swingably engaging said means for offsetting said hooked end, and a spring engaging said clamping member to constantly urge said clamping member in the direction of said one side of said supporting member.

2. A garment display means comprising a supporting means, a garment supporting bracket,

porting means, said bracket comprising an elongated horizontally disposed bar, a clamping member disposed in substantially parallel relation to said bar, means at the inner end of said clamping member for swingably securing said clamping member to said bar, a spring integral with the inner end of said clamping member constantly urging said clamping member in the direction of said bar, an obliquely disposed outer end carried by said clamping member terminating on the side of said bar opposite from said clamping member, an upwardly offset locking member carried by said outer end of said clamping member, said locking member engaging the outer end of said bar when in locking position to maintain said clamping member in clamping position, and an outwardly extending arm carried by said locking member and cooperating therewith to maintain the outer end of the clamping member against lateral movement in either direction.

As a new article of manufacture, a garment supporting bracket comp-rising a substantially V-shaped member having one side thereof disposed in horizontal position, means carried by the divergent ends of said member for engage ment with a supporting means to swingably secure the member to said supporting means, an elongated clamping member, a laterally offset portion carried by said horizontal side adjacent the free end thereof, means carried by said clamping member engaging said offset portion to swingably mount said clamping member on said horizontal side in a position to dispose said clamping member in substantially parallel relation to said horizontal side, a spring integral with said clamping member mounting means for constantly urging said clamping member upwardly, an up wardly extending locking member carried by the outer end of said clamping member and offset laterally therefrom whereby to engage said horizontal side on the side opposite from said clamping member, and an outwardly extending arm carried by said locking member engageable with the other side of said V-shaped member and cooperating with said locking member in maintaining said clamping member in clamping position.

4. A garment hanging device comprising a support, a garment receiving member carried by said support, said garment receiving member having an offset portion engaging with the support, and clamping means cooperating with said member to hold the garment thereon having a hinging movement around the offset portion, and spring means coacting with said offset portion to yieldably resist the movement of the clamping means into clamping engagement with a garment on said member, said member and clamping means having cooperating parts for binding the clamping means in clamping position against a garment on said member.

5. A garment hanger comprising a support, a bar for receiving a garment having an offset end portion engaged with said support, a clamping member having a hinging movement at one end about the offset portion of said bar and being coiled about the ofiset portion to produce a resilient hinge for normally holding the clamping member away from said bar, and locking means for binding the clamping member against a garment on said bar.

6. .A garment hanger comprising a support, a horizontal bar for carrying garments having a right angular end portion constituting a shank and an offset end extension substantially parallel with said bar but oflset laterally therefrom, said extension having means for engaging with said support, a clamping member of resilient material having one end portion wound in a number of convolutions about said shank and with its terminal end portion engaging said extension whereby to releasably and normally maintain said clamping member out of clamping engagement with said bar, and a locking member for engaging the free end portion of said clamping member in resilient tensioned clamping engagement with a garment upon said bar.
