Description

Dec. 8, 1936. F. J. PLYM 2,063,120
STORE FRONT CONSTRUCTION Filed June 24, 1955 Patented Dec. 8, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE s'roar. FRONTCONSTRUCTION Francis J. Plym, Niles, lvlich assignor to The Kawneer Company, Niles, Mich., a corporation of Michigan Application June 24, 1935, Serial No. 28,082
8 Claims. 1 (01. 20-5641) Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse cross-section;
This invention relates to store front construction and more particularly to novel means for mounting and holding the glass in position.
Among the objects of my invention is to pro- 5 vide novel means for resiliently but firmly holding the glass in position in the store front.
Another object is to provide a resilient bar or strip capable of being forced against the inside edge of the glass to resiliently hold the same against the rigid outer stop.
A further object is to provide means for'holding the glass in position, which means is adjustable from the inside of the window instead of the outside.
A still further object is the provision of a rigid front and adjustable back in store front construction.
Another object is means for causing the edges of the glass to meet in a novel manner at the corner of the store front construction and without the necessity of interposing special joint members or the like at such corner.
A still further object is the provision of store front construction which adapts itself to different parts of the same being made in different colors if desired.
A further object is the provision of store front construction in which the light for illuminating the interior of a show window will be below the line of vision of anyone looking through the show window.
Another object is the provision of means for clamping glass in position in store front construction from the inside and capable of fine adjustment to produce the proper. degree of pressure against the pane of glass to yieldingly hold it in proper position.
Other objects, advantages and capabilities will later more. fully appear. I My invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts i1 lustrated in' the accompanying drawings, and while I have shown therein a preferred embodiment I wish it understood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In the drawing:-- Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the 50 outside of my improved store front construction showing a corner.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical transverse section at a greater or less distance away from the meeting edges of the two pieces of glass at 55 the corner.
taken'on the line 3- -3 of Fig. 2.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, myimproved store front construction is mounted upon a foundational member or sill block I of greater or less height, on the 'inside'of which and near the bottom portion is provided one or more electric lights 2 connected to a suitable source of elec--;
tricity' for' illuminating- I the interiorof the show window'without the electric light bulb being visie 1 ble or-too conspicuous from the outside of the show window. *-This electriclight ishidden from view from the exterior of the showwindow'by reason ofits'being mountedclose up to the foundational memberl and in the corneradjacent the bottom of the same: This-light;:if desired, may
' be providediwitha reflecting member'3 in order to suitably refiect-thelight into the interior of the I show window;
Mounted upon the upper surface of the foundational member I is the sash member S, which may be extruded or rolled from any suitable metal (preferably a metal that does not easily corrode). This'sash member S is formed on its outer face with the outer moulding 4, which also serves as a protection against weather, dirt and the like."
The outer moulding 4 merges into the downwardly extending channel portions 5 and 6, between which is formed the channel 1 adapted to snugly receive the stop member 8, which latter may, ormay not, as desired, be provided on its upper edge with the inwardly extending nose 9. i
flange l0, through which at suitably spaced in- --tervals is threadedly mounted the adjusting screws l I, each of which is provided with knurled adjusting heads l2. stability for section S it is formed with a down wardly extending supporting flange l3, which rests upon the upper face of the foundational member I, which is also true of the bottom portions of the channel forming members 5 and 6. As shown in the drawing, the members 4, 5, 6, l0 and 13 are integrally formed and, as stated above, this completed section may be either extruded or rolled as desired. The glass I4 is seated upon suitable cushioning blocks l5, which may be formed of wood, leather or any other material In order. to provide greater.
that will give a suitable cushioning effect to the glass.
Interposed between the upstanding flange l0 and the inner face of glass M are the back members or clamping members l6, which are preferably made of resilient material so formed that when pressed by means of the adjusting screw I I, between the end of the adjusting screw and the glass, will yieldingly hold the glass in place against stop 9. While I prefer the member l6 to be of resilient material, it is understood that a nonresilient material may be used, providing the pressure between it and the glass is adjusted accurately in order not to break the glass.
From the above it is seen that I have provided a novelmounting and clamping means for store front construction, and one in which the edges of the glass meet at the corners of the store front without the necessity of the interposition of special joining members, and yet present theglass corners in even, sightly appearance and so closely fitted as to keep out the weather, either with or without a protective strip being applied to the exterior of such store front corner. The proper registry or alignment of the edges of the glass in this corner construction is shown and readily understood in Fig. 3.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
1, A store front construction, comprising a *sashmember having a stop member and a flange projecting from the inner face thereof, said stop member and flange being laterally spaced apart, the stop member being adapted to have a pane of glass pressed thereagainst, a resilient back member adjacent the flange, and adjustable means mounted on said flange and adapted to seat against said back member for forcing said back member into resilient contact with a pane of glass to grip the glass between the back member and the stop member.
