` My invention relates to slidewfasteners of the edgewise interlocking type and "particularly to improvements in fasteners of the above type which have a covering for concealing the metal elements of the fastener. y
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved construction in a covered fastener of the above type wherein the slider riding over the fastener elements and covering strips will not unduly wear or misplace the covering strips.
Other objects and advantages may appear during the course of the following specification. In the accompanying drawing I have shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice. In this drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of an edgewise interlocking slide fastener constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a partial longitudinal section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the slider on an enlarged scale; and
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on line 4--4 of Fig. 1.
The fastener illustratedhas the usual tapes or base strips 5 to which the @metal fastener elements 6 are conveniently attached in spaced re lation. The fastener elements each have an attaching portion I and an interlocking portion B projecting from the stringer edge. The covering preferably takes the form of thin flexible fabric strips 9 on each stringer which are attached to the tapes 5, and which overlie the fastener elements to such an extent that when the fastener is closed the edges of the covering strip meet and completely conceal the metal elements 6. The covering strips may conveniently be attached in position by cementing material I0 which extends up between the fastener elements 6 so as to hold the overlapping edges close against the metal elements. Of course, other suitable attaching means can be used such as stitching at the appropriate places.
The slider for engaging and disengaging the fastener elements 6 as it is ""moved along the fastener is best shown in Fig. 3, and comprises parallel top and bottom wings II and I2, respectively, connected by a wedging portion or neck I3. The bottom wing has the usual flangesY III which are shaped in such a manner that they serve to guide the fastener elements into and out of engagement in cooperation withn the central wedging portion I3. The top wing of the slider in this instance has no inward projections or flanges and it has been found that the flanges on the bottom wing are suflicient for guiding the fastener elements in most cases. It has also been found that a slider of this character always tends to press the covering strips down against the fastener elements as it slides along and does not wear or displace the covering strips as much as when provided with the usual guide flanges; also, of course, the trouble due to the catching of the slider on the covering strips is considerably reduced. It will be observed that the side flanges I4 tend to strengthen the bottom wing but -that they are not necessary on the top wing because of the presence of the outwardly projecting lug I5, which also serves for the convenient attachment for a pull tab I6.
As a result of my invention it will be observed that a highly useful and novel combination has been devised wherein the metal elements of the* fastener may be neatly covered by fabric strips, without danger of trouble due to excessive wear or catching of the slider.
While I have shown and described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that thisv embodiment is merely for the purposes of illustration and description and that various other forms may be devised within the scope of my invention as dened in the appended claims. f
What I claim as my invention is:`
1. In an edgewise interlocking slide fastener, a pair of flexible base strips comprising fastener element stringers, cooperating series of fastener elements attached to and projecting from the adjacent edges of said base strips, thin exible covering strips on one side only of said fastener overlying said fastener elements and said base strips, said covering strips being of such dimensions as to conceal the fastener elements when the fastener is closed, means for attaching said covering strips to said base strips alongside said fastener element series, means for attaching said covering strips to said base strips between said fastener elements, and a slider for engaging and disengaging the fastener elementshaving parallel top and bottom wings, said top Wing being continuously smooth, flat and unobstructed throughout its entire inner surface which bears on the cover strips, and the bottom wing being in direct contact with the fastener elements and having flanges along its sides to guide the fastener elements into and out of engagement.
2. In an edgewise interlocking slide fastener, a pair of fabric tapes comprising fastener element stringers, cooperating series of metal fastener elements having jaw portions attached to adjacent edges of said tapes in spaced relation and interlocking portions projecting from the tape edges, fabric covering strips on one side only of said fastener of such dimensions as to conceal the metal elementsymhen the fastener is closed, one of said strips being applied to each of said tapes and overlying fastener elements to such an extent that when the fastener is closed the edges of said covering strips will meet, means for firmly attaching said covering strips to said tapes including means for holding said meeting edges in a close contact with said metal elements, and a slider for engaging and disengaging the fastener elements having parallel top and bottom wings, said top wing being continuously smooth, flat and unobstructed throughout its entire inner surface which bears on the cover strips, and the bottom wing being in direct contact with the fastener elements and having flanges along its sides to guide the fastener elements into and out of engagement.
3. The combination specified in claim 1 including also an outwardly projecting lug on the top wing which strengthens the same, and a pull tab attached to said lug.
4. The combination specified in claim 1 wherein said attaching means comprises cementing material between the covering strips and base strips.
5. In an edgewise interlocking slide fastener, a pair of flexible base strips comprising fastener element stringers, cooperating series of fastener elements attached to and projecting from the adjacent edges of said base strips, thin flexible covering strips on one side only of said fastener overlying said fastener elements and said base strips, said covering strips being of such dimensions as to conceal the metal elements when the fastener is closed, the other side of said fastener covering strips to said base strips alongside said fastener element series, means for attaching said covering strips to said base strips between said fastener elements, and a slider for engaging and disengaging the fastener elements having parallel top and bottom wings-said top wing being continuously smooth, flat and unobstructed throughout its entire inner surface bearing against the cover strips, and the bottom wing being in direct contact with the fastener elements and having flanges along its sides to guide the elements into and out of engagement.
6. In an edgewise interlocking slide fastener, a pair of fabric tapes comprising fastener element stringers, cooperating series of metal fastener elements having jaw portions attached to adjacent edges of said tapes in spaced relation and interlocking portions projecting from the tape edges, fabric covering strips on one side only of said fastener of such dimensions as to conceal the metal elements when the fastener is closed, the other side of said fastener elements being exposed, one of said strips being applied to each of said tapes and overlying fastener elements to such an extent that when the fastener is closed the edges of said covering strips will meet, means for firmly attaching said covering strips to said tapes including means for holding said meeting edges in a close contact with said metal elements, and a slider for engaging and disengaging the fastener elements having parallel top and bottom wings, said top Wing being continuously smooth, flat and unobstructed throughout its entire inner surface bearing against the cover strips, and thebottom wing being in direct contact with the fastener elements and having flanges along its sides to guide the elements into and out of engagement.
