Patented June 6, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSHUA WAGNER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO DIAGONAL CORRUGATED PATENT CORPORATION, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK METHOD AND MACHINE FOR APPLYING ADHESIVE TO DIAGONALLY SEAMED BOX BLANKS Application filed December 9, 1931.
The invention relates more particularly to the operation of applying adhesive to, and sealing the joints of box blanks of the type whereln the joint or seam runs diagonally, and while the invention is disclosed as carried out by the aid of a specific machine as hereinafter described, such disclosure is to be regarded as merely illustrative of the principles of the invention. In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a planview of a machine adapted to be used in carrying out the invention.

Fig. 3 is a plan view of a box blank of a type in connection with which the invention is particularly adapted to be used, said blank being shown in flat form.
Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 4-4 of F igg looking in the direction of the arrows. ferring first to Fig. 3, I have there shown a box blank of a type which is known in the corrugated paper board industry as the one piece standard slotted carton, except that the edges 1 and 2 of the blank run diagonally instead of perpendicular to the edges 3 and 4. In the particular blank which is illustrated, one of the facing sheets 5 overlaps the edge 1 of the blank and the other facing sheet 6 overlaps the edge 2 of the 80 blank, in such manner that when the aforesaid edges are folded toward each other at the score lines 7 and 8 respectively, the edges 1 and 2 will abut to form the joint and the rojecting areas 5 and 6 will overlap the 85 oint thus formed, on opposite sides.
When the joint above mentioned is properly sealed, the blank may be readily shaped into rectangular box form with the aid of the score lines 7 and 8 above mentioned, and- 4 further score lines 9, 10, 11 which define the side edges of the box, as well as other score lines 12 and 13, which latter in conjunction with the slots 14 and 15, define the end flaps of the box. A blank of the above type is 45 particularly advantageous in connection with cartons wherein the corrugations run diagonally with respect to the edges of the carton, as set forth in prior Patent No. 1,620,174 issued to me on March 8, 1927. blank which are to form the joint, in accordance with the present invention, I first fold the blank from the fiat form shown in Fig.
3, to the form shown in Fig. 1, wherein the edge 2 of the blank has been folded about the score line 8 as an axis to overlap the intermediate portion of the blank. Balanced force is then applied to what I have termed hereinafter the angle shaped portion 16 (so numbered in Fig. 1) of the blank, which is formed by the above folding operation, to push the blank in a direction parallel to the side edge 1 past an adhesive applying mechanism which applies adhesive to the flap 2, or as hereinafter described in greater detail, preferably both to the flap 2 and along the adjacent edge portion of the other (top) face of the blank.
After the adhesive has been so applied, the edge 1 of the blank may be folded from the 10 form shown in Fig. 1 about the score line 7 as an axis, into a position wherein it abuts the edge 2, in which position the flap 2 will overlie the opposite edge portion of the face of the blank, and the flap 6 will underlie the edge 1 of the blank, the adhesive thus properly sealing the joint.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown a machine suitable for carrying out the adhesive-applying operation, such machine having a table 17 over which endless conveyors 18 run, being driven in any suitable manner (not illustrated). The central conveyor 18 is provided with an angle shaped pusher member 19 adapted to engage the apex of the angle shaped portion 16 of the blank when the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the outer conveyors 18 are provided with pusher members 20 adapted to engage the adjacent portions of the blank.
The pusher members thus apply balanced force to the blank when the latter is moved in a direction parallel to the edge 1, under which conditions the blank does not tend to shift out of proper location during movement, but on the contrary if inaccurately positioned in the first instance, will tend to assume correct position when moved in the proper direction, insuring that the edge 1 be 100 accurately alined with the direction of motion.
It will be understood that sets of pusher members 19 and 20 as above described, may be located at suitable intervals along the conveyors 18, although but one set is illustrated. The folding operations on the blank may be performed either manually or mechanically.
The machine is provided with suitable adhesive applying mechanism located in the path of travel of the edge 1 of the blank, a
preferred form of such mechanism being shown more in detail in Fig. 4. As there shown the adhesive-applying mechanism consists of an adhesive containing receptacle 21 mounted upon a base 22, carried by table 17 and adjustable transversely of the latter, as by means of bolts 23 adjustable in slots 24 ig. 1) in the table. The purpose of this is to enable the position of the adhesive applying mechanism to be adjusted in accordance with the size of blank being operated u on.
A rotary Wheel 25 (Fig. 2) runs in the adhesive contained in receptacle 21 and an obliquely mounted wheel 26 carried in hub 27, picks up adhesive from the face of Wheel 25, the periphery of this latter wheel 26 engaging the flap 2 of the blank in the position shown in Fig. 4, to apply adhesive to the latter-as the blank travels along.
As shown in Fig. 1 the machine may be equipped with two of these adhesive-applying mechanisms, one applying adhesive to the flap as above described, and the other-being provided to apply adhesive along the edge portion of the face of the blank which lies adjacent the edge 1. Or in some instances the wheel 26 may be specially shaped, as indicated by the dotted line 28 in Fig. 4, to engage both the flap 2 and the edge portion of the blank above referred to. 7
After the adhesive has been applied and the ed e portion '1 folded over as hereinabove descri ed, the blank takes the form. shown at the right of Fig. 1, and may be then passed under a traveling belt 30 (Fig. 2) which in conjunction with rollers 31 and 32 a plies pressure to the joint to seal the latter rmly, but this part of the machine will not be described in detail since suitable mechanisms for this purpose are known in the art.
While the invention has been described as carried out with the aid of a specific machine, it should be understood that changes may be made in the steps and/or mechanism em loyed without departing from the essentia features of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The method of applying adhesive to diagonally seamed paper board carton blanks of the class described, which includes folding one of the seam forming edges of the blank to produce an angle shaped portion in' the blank behind said edge, and applying balanced force to said angle shaped portion to move the other seam forming edge of the blank past an adhesive supplying device in the direction of the length of said last mentioned edge.
2. The method of operating upon diagonally seamed paper board carton blanks of the class described, which includes folding one of the seam forming edges of the blank to produce an angle-shaped portion in the blank behind said edge, applying balanced force to said angle-shaped portion to move the other seam forming edge of the blank past an adhesive device in the direction of the length of said last mentioned edge, and folding said last mentioned edge portion of the blank over into position adjacent the first mentioned edge.
3. The method of operating upon diagonally seamed paper board carton blanks having flaps adapted to overlap the seams, which includes folding one of the seam forming edges of the blank to produce an angle shaped portion in the blank behind said edge and similarly applying adhesive to the flap and edge portion of the remaining edge of the blank by applying balanced force to said angle shaped portion to move the second mentioned edge of the blank in the direction of its length past an adhesive supplying device, and then folding the last mentioned edge portion over into position adjacent the first mentioned edge to seal the seam.
