SAFETY RAZOR CARTON OPENER.

Our invention relates to the opening of packing cardboard cartons, and has for its object to provide a new .and efficient tool for cutting out the top of a pasteboard packing carton so that the products may be-removed therefrom with ease.

A further object is to fprovide an ad ustable tool for cutting o the top of cartons and which tool may be so adjusted as to cut atdifierent distances from the top of the carton or adjusted to cut difierent depths into the carton, depending upon the need.

' A still further object is to provide a carton opener which is designed to use old safety razor blades or new blades having double cutting edges as desired, thereby making an economical device for the owner and making an economical device to manufacture as the razor blades may be purchased at any store. i

A still further object is to provide a long lived device which ma be used for many years by changing the lade whenever dull and which has a removable wing'nut and threads of the bolt be stripped another bolt may be inserted therein.

Av still further object is toprovide pockets in the body of the device to carry extra blades for the opener.

A still further object is to provide a cartoi i opener which is so built as to allow the cutting blade to be placed therein from either direction to allow the device to be used by a right or left handed person and which blade may be adjusted in the device at various angles to provide the best cutting angle for the type of box or carton being opened. These objects we accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar numerals and letters of. reference indicate like parts throughout the several views'and as described in the specification forming a part of this applicae appended claims.

In the drawing we have shown the base of the device as A,'h aving a step out B in one edge thereof to form a flange 2 on one side thereof. The base is then provided 55 with a medially disposed hole through which a bolt'l is screwed. The bolt 1 extends upward from the base to receive a spacer plate D, a cover plate C, and a wing nut 11.

On each side of the bolt 1 we provide a set of spaced apart bars 3 and 4,'and 5 and 6, set in the base A so that the bars 3 and 4 are in alignment with each other,' but so that aline drawn through the axis of the bars 3 and 4 would engage the step out of the base at an acute angle. Likewise a line drawn through the axis of the bars 5 and 6 would also intercept the step of the base at an acute angle, but atapproximately a right angle to that of the angle of the 30 bars 3 and 4. These vertical bars are provided to carry the razor blades used in the device, the two bars being spaced apart suitic'ient distance to fit the two end holes of any type razor blade made to be used in a Gillette or Probak razor, or to engage in the slot of any type of safety razor blade having a medial slot therein such as the Durham Spaced apart slots. 7 and 8 are cut in the sides of the vertical bars to allow for some degree of side movement of the razor blades thereon so that" the operator may move the blade-to engage more or less of the box as desired. to insure boxes or to cut through boxes having more than one thickness of cardboard. To enable the blade to be lowered so that a box having a heavier top may be opened we roa spacer plate D having a medial ole G; A medial hole 13 allows the central bolt 1 to be passed up through the plate C.

The base A is provided with depressions or sockets 14 and 15 in the ends thereof to receive extra blades and to carry such blades therein. The back side of the base and the plates have hand engaging extensions 16 and 17 and 18 formed thereon to allow the operator to hold onto the device more easily.

The operation of the device is as follows The operator takes hold of the device and laying the flange 2 flat on the top of the box engages the step out B along the side of the box and draws the blade G into the box along the side thereof which blade cuts off that side of the box. The operator then turns the corner and draws the blade along the next side and so on until the top is either entirely out or until three sides have been out free and the top may then be raised up bending the fourthside and usin the top as a hinged lid for the carton, wit the fourth uncut side acting as the hinge.

A left handed person must place the blade in the device so that it may be used with the left hand and in order to enable the user to know which setting is for which hand the letters L and R are stamped into the base, indicating the side on which the cut ting blade H is to be placed for the different uses.

If it-is desired to cut off a box top having a very thick lid the spacer plate D is place adjacent the base A and the cutting blade I G is placed between the plate D and the cover plate 0. For most boxes the blade is between the plate D and the base A.

For boxes or cartons requiring a deeper cut the blade may be extended out by adjus'tn'int in the slots 7 or 8 as necessary,

the slots 8 being for use when the blade is between the spacer and the cover plates, and the slots 7 being for adjustment when the blade is between the base A andthe spacer plate D.

Having thus described our invention we desire to secure by Letters Patent "and claim:

In a device of the class described the comv -'bination of a base having a step out in one longitudinal edge thereof and an extended hand engaging portion'on the opposite longitudinal edge thereof; sockets in said base in which extra cutting blades may be carried; sets of s aced apart ali ed lu extended from t e side of said ase ad]acent said step cut, one set being to hold the blade to cut with one edge and the other set to hold the blade to cut in the oppositedirection with the opposite cutting edge; a cutting blade having both edges sharpened and adapted to fit over said lugs; slots in said lugs to allow for angle ad ustment of said blade on said lugs; a spacer late to be carried on said base on either si e of said blade to space the blade from the-step cut the proper space for opening either light or heavy cartons; a cover plate carried on said base over said spacer plate having sockets on the inner-side thereof to engage with the ends of the lugs; a medially, disposed bolt passed through said base and cover plate; and a wing nut to appl pressure to the cover plate to hold the b ade in fixed relation to the step out of said base.
