Patented Mar. 14, 1933 UNITED STATES 7 JOHN H. WARE, JR, or oxronn, PENNSYLVANIA DISPLAY Box Application filed January 23, 1931. SeriaI'No. 516,758.
The subject of my invention is to provide a display device adapted to contain a plurality of packages arranged in steps. My dlsplay device has side walls which may be generally diagonal in outline so that two such boxes may be fitted together or superposed to present a rectangular outer surface adapted to fit in a rectangular contamer for shipment. At the taller end of my box there is pro vided a flap which has a bendable portion thereon adapted to display printed matter when in upright position and it may extend for more than the width of a package when p g I other ultimate sales point this outer con-1 bent parallel to the bottom of the box. My display device is also provided with tabs struck from the side walls of the box at such a height as to engage the package which forms the second step, or higher like step if present, and to thereby retain that package in position and it also helps friction to retain packages which form the lower layer in position. My display device also has its lower end bent over and fastened to the bot- 1:0111 to reinforce the box at that point.
For a further exposition of my invention reference may be had to the annexed drawings and specification at the end whereof my invention will be specifically pointed out and G claimed.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in projection showing two of my display devices nested or fitted together.
Figure 2 is a view in projection showing my display device with packages arranged in steps.
Figure 3 is a side elevation with parts broken away.
Figure 4 is a vertical cross section looking to the left of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a view in projection showing one type, selected from other types of pack 4 ages adapted to be displayed in my device.
Figure 6 is a view in projection showing my display device with the flap in upright position.
Figure 7 is a side elevation showing two of my display devices fitted together.
Figure 8 is a diagrammaticview showing 7 the blank from which the box is made.-. In the embodiment chosen for illustration in the drawin'gsand referring especiallyfor convenience to Figure 6 there is therein .dis' 5 closed a display device consisting essene tially of a box generally indicated atvl-whi'ch is adapted to contain a plurality of packages 2 arranged in steps. Box 1 is adapted to nest with a similar box sothat: both boxes together present arectangular .outersurface which may be contained in'a rectangular package for shipment with the packages in lace. Upon arrival at the retail store or tainer is opened and the two display devices are removed and separated. -,The flaps are then bent to upright position whereupon the device is in position to display the" goods without further adjustment. i Box 1 has a bottom wall generally indi cated at 3 and side walls 4 and 5 which are generallydiagonal in outline. As seen" in Figure ,3 the box l contains a plurality of packages 2 and walls 4 andfi may be notched 7 5 or otherwise cut to fit the packages whichare arranged in steps.
The taller end of the box is reinforced by means of a portion 66 which is adapted to be bent down parallel to the end wall. tween the end wall and the flap 66 there are located flaps 67 and 68 which form extensions of the side walls 4 and 5and which serve to reinforce this end ofthe box.
At the taller end of the box 1 islocated a flap 6 whichis fastened to bottom 3 by means of a tab 7 struck from bottom 3. Flap6 may however be fastened to the box inany I convenient manner. At its upper end flap 6 has a bendable portion 8 which may be bent into a position parallel to the bottom of the box so that grasping the display device'with the thumb or fingers'resting on the portion 8, one may retain all the packages in the box. Portion 8 is adapted to display printed matter on its .inner face when in upright position. '1 i From the central portion of' side Walls 4 and 5 there are struck tabs 9 of whichthe.
number is appropriate to number of tiers Bef 80 require.
of packages employed. These may be of any desirable shape. As shown, these tabs are located at a convenient height to engage the package 2 which forms the second step and in the case of more steps than shown, additional tabs are provided and arranged to engage additional and superposed pack-- ages. As shown most clearly in Figure 4 tab 9 is intended to he slid into package 2.
The wall 11 which forms the lower end. of
box 1 is bent over against itself and flattened out against the bottom 3 of the box where it is retained by a tab 12 or by any" other'convenient means. Flap 11 therefore serves to reinforce this wall of the box.
From the foregoing itis believed apparent thata person may slide two boxes apart from the position shown in Figure 1 and by holding the flap 8 down with the thumb or fingersfall the packages 2 may be retained inbox. l'arranged in steps in an attractive position for display. Flap 8 is then simply bent to upright position where it displays the printed matter on its inner face and serves to carry out the step arrangement of the packages in a: veryattractive manner.
I do notintend to be limited in' the pracportion of said box being of a height which is approximately a multiple of the height of one of saidpackages, the side walls of said box having a portion equal in height to said higher end Wall and extending the distance of' the width of one of said packages, and said side walls of said box having a portion out away diagonally from sal'd higher height to said lowerheight, whereby said box and the packages therein may interfitdetachably with a similar box andv packages to form an object rectangular 1n 1 outline.
JOHN H. WARE, JR.
tice of my invention save as the scope of a the priorart and of the attached claims may I claim; i

A display device comprising a box having sidewalls generally diagonal in outline defining a normally open upper. surface and -adapted to contain a plurality of packagesarranged in steps and adapted to fit with a similar-box so that both boxes present a rectangular outersurface and tabs struck from the said side walls of the box at a sufiicient height to engage'a package resting on another package. 7 a
2. A package rectangular in form and comprising, in combination, two separate open topboxes adapted for face to face as *sembly and each higher at one end than it is at the other end and each provided at its high end with a flap and at its side wall with a tab, and packages filling said boxes and arranged in adjacent groups of progressively increasing number from the low to the high ends of the boxes, an intermediate group of packages being held in the boxes by the tabs, and a group of packages at the high. end beingheld in the boxes by said "flaps.
