Description
B. RUDOLFF Nov. 27; 1934.
LEVEL AND SQUARE Filed March 3, 1931 ATTORNEY Patented Nov. 27, 1934 UNITED FATE-NT? 4 1,982,178 Lever. somati- Ba'rnet' Rudolfi, Bayonn'etNr J.- Application March's'; -19s"1;sesame. 519,766 4 Claims.- (or.. 33439:
This invention relates to a level and square, and is an improvement of the level described in my patent application filed June 30th, 1930, Serial Number 464,877, which has matured into Pat- ,5 ient No. 1,927,504, Sept. 19, 1933.
The object of the invention is the production of a level which has detachably connected to its body portion a blade at right angles thereto, or parallel to said body portion or inclined thereto.
The second object of the invention is the production of a level, which can easily have attached thereto, or detached therefrom a plurality of blades.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 represents a side view of an exemplification of the improved level and square; Fig. 2 shows a top view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 indicates a section of Fig. 1 on the line 3, 3 and Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 1 on the line 4, 4.
The body portion of the level comprises the top plate 20, the bottom plate 21, the end plate 22 and the end plate 23. A longitudinal web 26 is formed with the top plate 20 and a longitudinal web 27 extends from the bottom plate 21. The
30 described in my said patent application filed June 30th, 1930, Serial Number 464,877.
Adjacent to the end plate 22 and between the top plate 20 and the bottom plate 21, is formed the pocket 40, which is parallel to the end plate 22, and the pocket 41, which makes, in this instance, an angle of forty-five degrees with the plates 20 and 21. The side walls of the pocket 40 are indicated at 42, which join with the end wall 43 at one end and the end wall 44, at the other end. The end wall 44 joins with the end plate 22. The pocket 41 is indicated with the side walls 46, and the end walls 47 and 48. A web 49, is formed between the walls 43 and 47, and a web 50 extends from the wall 48 and joins with the webs 26 and 27.
Adjacent to the end plate 23 is formed the pocket 55, which is parallel to the plates 20 and 21. The side walls of the pocket 55, are indicated at 56. A top wall 57 joins the side walls 56 at one end and a bottom wall 58 joins the walls 56 at their other end. A cross wall is shown at 59. The wall 58 joins with the plate 21.
A blade has formed therewith the shank 66, which is of less width than the main portion of said blade. A shoulder 67 is formed between the said blade 65 and its shank 66. A scale 68 is a dicated on the blade 65. Set screws 70 are in threaded engagement with threaded openings extending through the end plate 22, and the end wall 44, and detachably clamp the shank 66 in operative position, to position the blade 65 at right angles to the plates 20 and 21. I
The said shank 66 is adapted to be located in the pocket 41, to position its blade 65 in an inclined position, in this instance at an angle of forty-five degrees to the top plate 20.
Threaded openings 72 for screws extend through the top plate 20 and the walls 47 and 48 to clamp the shank 66 in its inclined position. A blade 75 is shown having the shank 76 respectively similar to 65 and 66. The shank 76 is adapted to be located in the pocket 55, which positions the blade 75 parallel to the bottom plate 21. Threaded openings 77 extend through the bottom plate 21 and the wall 58 for screws to detachably clamp the shank 76 in operative position.
When the blade 65, is positioned with its shank 66, in the pocket 40, a. square is formed with the body portion of the level. When the blade 65 is positioned with its shank 66, in the pocket 41, angles can be indicated on an object operated upon, and when the shank 76, is positioned in the pocket 55, the body portion of the level is practically extended to a great length.
A scale 80, is indicated on the top plate 20.
The pocket 41 may be made wider than the width of the shank 66, as indicated in dotted lines at 82 and 83, Fig. 1, whereby the angle of the shank 66 and its blade may be varied from 45 degrees. When the shank 66 is tightly secured in the pocket 41 with its end walls disposed as shown at 82 and 83, the lower end of the shank bears against either the wall 82 or 83.
Various modifications may be made in the invention and the present exemplification is to be taken as illustrative and not lirnitative thereof.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:
1. In combination, a body portion formed of a top plate, a bottom plate and connecting end plates, spaced walls extending between said top and bottom platesand adjacent to one of said end plates, one or more apertures in said plates communicating with the space between said walls to provide a plurality of angularly disposed pockets, a blade adapted to be positioned selectively in one of said pockets and means to detachably clamp said blade in place.
2. In combination, a body portion formed of, a
Lil
top plate, a bottom plate and connecting end plates, spaced walls extending between said top and bottom plates and adjacent to one of said end plates, one or more apertures in said plates communicating with the space between said walls to provide a plurality of disposed pockets, the longitudinal axes of said pockets making angles with one another, a blade adapted to be positioned selectively in one of said'pockets and screws extending through threaded openings of the walls of the pockets to pinch the blade to detachably clamp the same in place.
3. In combination, a body portion formed of. a.
top plate, a bottom plate and connecting end plates, spaced walls extending between said top and bottom plates, one or more apertures in said plates communicating with the space between said walls to provide a plurality of angularly disposed pockets, a blade adapted to be positioned; v selectively in one of said pockets end walls for said pockets and screws engaging threaded openings in said end walls to engage said blade to de-' tion i thereof and of less width than one of said pockets, end walls for said pockets, and screws ngaging threaded openings in said end walls to engage opposite edges of the said shank to'position it with its lower end bearing against one of the end walls of the latter pocket and to detachably clamp said shank in place.
